New law on ‘straight trucks’ may ease paperwork for truckers

News

July 1st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Starting today (Saturday), a new state law goes into effect that may reduce some paperwork for truckers and companies that haul cargo. The law deals with so-called “straight trucks” that are different from semis that pull loaded trailers. Straight trucks carry cargo in the body of the truck. Iowa law had restricted the length of “straight trucks” to 41 feet. Iowa’s new law lets a single truck operate on the state’s roads if it’s four feet longer — 45 feet from bumper-to-bumper.

During the 2017 legislative session, Senator Michael Breitbach, of Strawberry Point, encouraged his colleagues to back the move. “This is similar to what happens in some of the states that surround us, that their feet are allowed to be 45 feet when they cross into Iowa,” Breitbach said. “They run into problems and have to get special permits for overlength loads. This would just give us a little more uniformity from state-to-state.”

The federal government sets a minimum size for SEMI tractors and trailers, but size limits for straight trucks vary from state to state. Iowa’s new law will align with straight truck size limits in Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota and Kansas. It also means a straight truck that’s 45-feet long will be able to travel the entire length of Interstate 35 from Minnesota to Texas without getting permits for being oversized. This Saturday, July 1st, is the date when many new state laws take effect.

Nebraska and Wisconsin have straight truck size limits of 40 feet. Illinois has a 42 feet limit.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — This is the big one that didn’t get away. The Quad-City Times reports that a Davenport man caught 60-pound flathead catfish out of the Mississippi River at Davenport on Friday. That topped the 45-pound catfish Samuel Brown hauled in at about the same spot last year.

Brown says he had told a friend he planned to “catch a big one” on Friday. When he did, he noted that he opened the fish’s mouth and “could just about put my head in there.” Brown said he set his line a couple of hours before the giant fish bit. It took him about 25 minutes to reel it in.

Leake and Molina lead Cardinals to 8-1 win over Nationals

Sports

June 30th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Mike Leake pitched eight strong innings and Yadier Molina drove in four runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 8-1 on Friday night. The Cardinals have won five of their past six, while the Nationals have dropped four of six.

Leake (6-6) got his first win since he last went eight innings in a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 24. He was 0-4 with two no-decisions before picking up the victory Friday. He pitched eight innings, giving up one run on five hits, striking out four and walking three.

A wild Tanner Roark (6-6) took the loss, lasting just three innings. He gave up four hits but walked a season-high five, the final two of which resulted in the Cardinals’ first two runs. Of his 85 pitches in the game, only 46 were strikes.

Molina extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a two-run single in the third and added another two-run hit as the Cardinals scored five times in the fourth off reliever Jacob Turner.
