ACC, Big Ten, and PAC-12 announce alliance

Sports

August 24th, 2021 by admin

GREENSBORO, NC & ROSEMONT, IL & SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 today announced an historic alliance that will bring 41 world-class institutions together on a collaborative approach surrounding the future evolution of college athletics and scheduling.

The alliance – which was unanimously supported by the presidents, chancellors and athletics directors at all 41 institutions – will be guided in all cases by a commitment to, and prioritization of, supporting student-athlete well-being, academic and athletic opportunities, experiences and diverse educational programming. The three conferences are grounded in their support of broad-based athletic programs, the collegiate model and opportunities for student-athletes as part of the educational missions of the institutions.

The three conferences remain competitors in every sense but are committed to collaborating and providing thought leadership on various opportunities and challenges facing college athletics, including:

  • Student-athlete mental and physical health, safety, wellness and support
  • Strong academic experience and support
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Social justice
  • Gender equity
  • Future structure of the NCAA
  • Federal legislative efforts
  • Postseason championships and future formats

The alliance includes a scheduling component for football and women’s and men’s basketball designed to create new inter-conference games, enhance opportunities for student-athletes, and optimize the college athletics experience for both student-athletes and fans across the country. The scheduling alliance will begin as soon as practical while honoring current contractual obligations. A working group comprised of athletic directors representing the three conferences will oversee the scheduling component of the alliance, including determining the criteria upon which scheduling decisions will be made. All three leagues and their respective institutions understand that scheduling decisions will be an evolutionary process given current scheduling commitments.

The football scheduling alliance will feature additional attractive matchups across the three conferences while continuing to honor historic rivalries and the best traditions of college football.

In women’s and men’s basketball, the three conferences will add early and mid-season games as well as annual events that feature premier matchups between the three leagues.

The three conferences will also explore opportunities for the vast and exceptional Olympic Sports programs to compete more frequently and forge additional attractive and meaningful rivalries.

Iowa’s Tyler Linderbaum focused on improvement

Sports

August 24th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum says he is focused on improvement and not individual accolades heading into the season. A finalist for the Rimington Trophy last year, Linderbaum has been named an AP preseason first team All-American.

Linderbaum says it was an easy decision to return to Iowa and not enter the NFL Draft.

Linderbaum says new offensive line coach George Barnett has been focused on consistency.

The Hawkeyes open at home on September fourth against Indiana.

Tight ends look for another big year at Iowa State

Sports

August 24th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Tight end play has been a big part of the rise of the Iowa State football program and that position group figures to be strong once again. Cyclone tight ends led the nation with 82 receptions a year ago and Charlie Kolar says with so many teams playing without a tight end on the field it gives them an advantage.

Kolar says Matt Campbell’s use of the tight end was a big factor in him coming to ISU.

Iowa State will open the season ranked seventh and Kolar believes the Cyclones have the right amount of confidence.

Senior Chase Allen says the use of tight ends helps the offense use multiple looks.

Allen says the tight ends need to be versatile in there play.

Allen says the tight ends also have to be good in the run game.

ISU opens September fourth at home against UNI.

Joe Toussaint takes over at Iowa

Sports

August 23rd, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa guard Joe Toussaint admits he was concerned when Jordan Bohannon announced he was returning to the Hawkeyes for a sixth season. After starting 20 games as a freshman Toussaint saw his role diminish when Iowa’s all time leader in assists returned from hip surgery. It was a call from Bohannon that let Toussaint know he will be the starting point guard.

He says Bohannon let him know he was moving to off guard.

Toussaint says as a junior he is ready to step up his game.

Toussaint says even in this era of mass transfers he never thought of moving on.

Bohannon says moving to the off guard will help him physically

Bohannon says he wanted to let Joe know right away that this is his team to run.
