The Harlan Police Department says no injuries were reported following accidents that have taken place over the past couple of weeks. The most recent accident happened Saturday, when vehicles driven by Hans Henning Kofoed, of Molov, Denmark, and Leah Ann Heiman, of Harlan, collided at the intersection of Highway 59 and Chatburn Avenue. Authorities say it occurred when Kofoed failed to yield the right of way. His 2017 Chevy Malibu struck the right rear of the 2012 Ford Fusion, driven by Heiman.

An accident August 24th occurred in Harlan, when Jocelyn Elise-Marie Cheek, of Panama, who was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, failed to yield to a 2005 Chevy Tahoe, driven by Justin David Wooster, of Harlan. Cheek’s car was hit on the passenger side by the Tahoe.

On August 23rd, a 2007 Ford Escape, driven by Sonia Shepherd, of Harlan, was traveling west on Chatburn Avenue, when the vehicle crossed the center line of the road in the 1900 block, and narrowly missed a light pole and two trees before colliding with a third tree.

Harlan Police said also, on Aug. 19th, a 2002 Ford F-350 pulling a trailer, was eastbound on Durant Street, when the trailer became unhitched in the 1400 block of Durant. The trailer veered off the road and hit three cable boxes. The pickup was driven by Tyler Alex Powers, of Harlan.

And, on Aug. 17th, a 2004 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Terry Lynn Saunders, of Harlan, was backing out of a parking stall, when the vehicle struck a 2007 Honda Accord, driven by Cassie Ann Brockhoff, of Shelby.

The Harlan Police Department has issued a report on recent arrests. On August 24th, 68-year old Larry Levi Andersen, of Kirkman, was arrested following a traffic stop in Harlan.  Andersen was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with operating while intoxicated.

On Aug. 21st, 41-year old Joshua Urena, of Harlan, was arrested for driving while suspended.

On August 19th, Harlan Police arrested 21-year old Dalton Chandler James Henscheid, of Harlan, for driving while barred and careless driving. And, 44-year old Jeffery Allen Sanderfer, of, Harlan, was arrested on an active warrant.  Sanderfer was transported to the Shelby County Jail.

August 18th, Harlan Police arrested 48-year old Lee Alan Dille, of Harlan, for possession of a controlled substance, prohibited acts penalties, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to maintain safety belts. The previous day, 59-year old Walter Charles Gaul, of Harlan, was arrested on an active warrant and transported to the Shelby County Jail.

And, on Aug. 17th, 20-year old Seth Dewayne Strong, of Harlan, was arrested following a traffic stop in Harlan.  Strong was charged with driving with a suspended license.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office today (Tuesday) released a report on numerous arrests that took place over the past week. Yesterday (Monday), 57-year old Rhonda Michelle Hafner, of Griswold, was arrested on a District Court warrant for Failure to Appear for Probation Violation Hearing. During the arrest, Hafner was also charged with OWI 2nd Offense; Possession of Alprazolam 2nd Offense; Possession of Hydrocodone 2nd Offense; Driving While Revoked; Possession of Marijuana 2nd Offense; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Interference with Official Acts. Hafner was taken to the Cass County Jail where she remains held on $13,000 bond.

Last Saturday, Cass County Deputies arrested 25-year old Jake Andrew Hulsebus, and 22-year old Kyle Lynn Wilson, both of Atlantic. Both men were charged with Possession of Marijuana 1st Offense. They were taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on their own recognizances.

On August 25th, 48-year old Glenn Lee Rochholz, of Atlantic, was arrested on a Federal Warrant for Prohibited Person in Possession of Firearm. During the arrest, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office also charged him with Possession of Methamphetamine 3rd or Subsequent (a Class D Felony). Rochholz was taken to the Cass County Jail and later transferred.

That same day, 47-year old Pamela Joann Murphy, of Casey, was arrested by Cass County Deputies on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for Theft 4th Degree. Murphy was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on her own recognizance.

And, on August 23rd, 19-year old Kaylee Renae Roach, of Atlantic, was arrested on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for OWI 1st Offense. Roach was taken to the Cass County Jail and was released the following day on her own recognizance.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The former finance director of a drug treatment agency has been given 25 years in prison for stealing from the agency. The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports that 37-year-old Amy Howell was sentenced Monday in Marshall County District Court. She’d pleaded guilty to felony ongoing criminal conduct and to misdemeanor unauthorized use of a credit card. Prosecutors dropped forgery and theft charges in return for Howell’s pleas.

Prosecutors say Howell stole more than $82,000 from the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit of Central Iowa, which is headquartered in Marshalltown. The agency provides substance abuse prevention and treatment services in Hardin, Marshall, Poweshiek and Tama counties.

Iowa’s Attorney General has reached an agreement with a Boise, Idaho business that will change the way the company markets its products. A-G spokesman Geoff Greenwood says the mailing from a company known as “Need-A-Lead” caught their attention. “That’s titled Government Benefit Supplement Policy. It looks like an official type of government mailing. Unfortunately for the company, they sent it to an investigator who works for our consumer protection division — he received it at home and brought it to the office and we opened a case,” Greenwood explains.

They alleged the way the letter presented the product was a violation of Iowa’s Consumer Fraud Act.”Regardless of the merits of the product — and in this case it’s selling death benefit insurance or funeral insurance — the product may be legitimate, but the way it’s being marketed is something we alleged is deceptive,” Greenwood says.

He says the mailing could make someone take action in the mistaken belief it is a letter from the government. “The front of the letter says 2017 benefit information for Iowan citizens only, second notice, time sensitive, and it just appears to have the look and feel of a government mailing,” according to Greenwood. “We don’t have a problem with legitimate marketing. What we have a problem with is when a company makes it look like it’s coming from the government when it’s not.”

The mailing sought the recipient’s phone number and age, and spouse’s age to see if they would qualify for what it described as a “free service.” He says you look into such mailings before taking any action. Greenwood says you should call if you have any questions about whether the letter comes from a particular agency and find out if they actually sent it. He says it’s likely they will tell you they didn’t send out the letter. Greenwood says they believe the issue has been settled.

He says they’ve reached what’s called an “Assurance of Voluntary Compliance” so the company will not longer market its services in this way. “We believe it’s a successful agreement in that the company is changing its marketing techniques.”

Greenwood says some 26-thousand Iowans may have gotten the letter late last year. The agreement also required Need-A-Lead and its owner to pay 15-hundred dollars to support future consumer fraud enforcement efforts.
