Dispatcher, involved in Flight 232 response, retires after 30+ years of 911 calls

News

September 30th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

A northwest Iowa woman ended a 31-year career as a 9-1-1 dispatcher on Thursday — a career highlighted by a plane crash with nearly 300 people on board. Louise Keleher says she’ll remember many calls, but none more vividly than the emergency summon she answered 28 years ago.

“Probably the biggest call of all was the crash of Flight 232. I was working fire radio that day. I took the call from the tower and I’m the one who sent out the fire rigs and the ambulances that day,” Keleher said. The crash of United Flight 232 in Sioux City on July 19, 1989 killed 111 people. Another 185 survived. The plane’s crew and emergency responders were praised for their actions in the incident that most thought would not be survivable.

Keleher landed the dispatcher’s job after answering a newspaper ad. She noted the technology to dispatch emergency crews has changed dramatically since her first day on the job. “We had one computer. We did not have anything that we have today. So, everything was hand written on cards and dispatched that way,” Keleher said.

While Keleher’s calm demeanor has helped many people in need over the years, the job is often stressful and isn’t ideal for just anyone.

“You miss a lot of family time because you work holidays and weekends,” Keleher said. “It’s something you really have to commit to and have your family’s support before you can do this kind of job.” Keleher’s son is a lieutenant with Sioux City Fire Rescue and has been dispatched on calls by his mother. A reception for Keleher was held Thursday at Sioux City Police and Fire headquarters.

Atlantic shows grit in loss at Glenwood

Sports

September 30th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans football team showed a lot of grit in a tough loss on the road at Glenwood on Friday night 42-20.  The final score was not at all indicative of how the game played out.

Glenwood scored a touchdown with 2:02 left in the first half after stopping the Trojans on a 4th down attempt near mid field. That gave the Rams their first two score lead of the night at 21-7 at the break.  The Rams would push that lead to 28-7 after going 61 yards in ten plays to score on their opening possession of the second half. Andrew Blum capped the drive with his second touchdown run of the night from 26 yards out.

From that point the Trojans rallied.  Atlantic scored 13-unanswered on their next two possessions to climb within 8 points 28-20.  Jaxson Eden hooked up with Logan Reilly for the first score. Chase Mullenix then picked off an Andrew Blum pass to give the ball back to the Trojans. On a fourth and goal from the 5 Eden hooked up with Gratt Reed on a touchdown pass to get to the one score margin.

After forcing a Glenwood fumble the Trojans were working their way down the field to potentially tie the game. Then on a short pass to Chase Mullenix the ball was bobbled into the air and Jake Murtfeld made a diving interception at the 10 yard line to give the ball back to Glenwood. The Rams would capitalize, going 90 yards in 10 plays capped off by a 6 yard touchdown run by Noah Carter to give Glenwood a two score lead again at 35-20.  The Rams would add another late Noah Carter touchdown run to ice the win.

Glenwood was led by Noah Carter with 205 yards on 27 carries and 4 rushing touchdowns.  The Rams finished with 480 yards of total offense as they improve to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in district play.

Atlantic was led by a nice passing night from Jaxson Eden who was 20-31 for 258 yards and 3 touchdowns. Chase Mullenix had 8 catches fro 133 yards on the night and he also added 23 rushing yards and an interception on defense.  The Trojans had 335 yards of total offense as they fall to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in district play.

The Trojans return home to face ADM next week.
