Midwest Sports Headlines: Chiefs lose to Raiders

Sports

October 20th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Derek Carr threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree on the final play after the game was extended by two straight defensive holding calls and the Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak with a 31-30 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The game had a wild finish with Oakland having two apparent winning touchdowns wiped out by penalty and the Chiefs committing the two penalties that extended the game.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch has been ejected after shoving an official. Lynch came off the bench after quarterback Derek Carr was hit late by Kansas City’s Marcus Peters in the second quarter. Lynch got into the middle of a scuffle and ended up shoving line judge Julian Mapp.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa and Northwestern have underwhelming Big Ten records that can be taken with a grain of salt given the quality of the teams they’ve lost to. The Hawkeyes and Wildcats are about to get closer to finding out how good they truly are in 2017 _ as is often the case when these West division foes square off. Iowa will travel to face Northwestern after a bye week that followed an easy win over woeful Illinois.

UNDATED (AP) — Two of the Big 12’s improving teams meet when Iowa State plays at Texas Tech. The Cyclones have won consecutive conference games and have four wins overall. It’s their most victories since going 6-7 in 2012. Iowa State followed up an upset victory at Oklahoma with a 45-0 win over Kansas. Texas Tech was back in the Top 25 before losing at West Virginia. But the Red Raiders have four wins, one shy of last year’s total.

UNDATED (AP) — The running game has become increasingly important in the Big 12 this season _ with a host of talented young backs leading the way. Seven of the league’s top-rated rushers were underclassmen as the league reached the midway point of the season. They’re led by Oklahoma State’s Justice Hill, Iowa State’s David Montgomery and Oklahoma’s talented duo of Trey Sermon and Abdul Adams.
