News

November 12th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has identified the subject shot Saturday in Humboldt County by an Iowa Department of Natural Resources Officer, as 20-year old Shane Allen Jensen, of Humboldt.  Jensen was being sought by family members and law enforcement on November 11th, 2017, after expressing thoughts of suicide by cop to family members and stealing a motor vehicle.

When located in Dakota City by officers of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 205 4th Avenue in Dakota City, Jensen fired one round in the air and then pointed a loaded 9 mm handgun at officers.  An officer with the Iowa DNR fired one round at Jensen fatally wounding him.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.  The results of the completed investigation will be forwarded to the Humboldt County Attorney’s Office for review.

Iowa cruises to 92-58 win over Alabama State

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Newcomer Luke Garza led Iowa’s charge to a 92-58 victory over Alabama State, scoring 11 points to go with 13 rebounds Sunday. Though the freshman shot just 2 of 8 from the field, he added seven points from the free throw line on 11 attempts.

The Hawkeyes (2-0) found plenty of use out of their bench, as 10 players got at least 10 minutes of playing time. Few members of the team played more than 20 minutes — Cordell Pemsl saw the most time, getting 24 minutes on the floor while putting up 15 points and grabbing five rebounds. Thirteen Hawkeyes got out on the floor, including rarely-used Charlie Rose and Riley Till.

Iowa freshman Connor McCaffery missed his second straight game with a sprained ankle. But McCaffery could make his debut Thursday against Grambling State.

Professor donates hundreds of books to western Iowa jail

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa Western Community College professor and literacy advocate has donated hundreds of books to a county jail. Nicole Juranek is a communications professor at the community college in Council Bluffs. On Wednesday, she hauled 800 paperback books to the Pottawattamie County Jail to give inmates there something to read.

The Daily Nonpareil reports that it was Juranek’s third annual donation to the jail. But this one more than doubled the 300 she donated in her first two years. Juranek made this year’s donation on the heels of her 40th birthday. In lieu of a party, she asked friends and family to give paperback books to be donated.

Juranek previously taught reading workshops at Nebraska prison in Omaha, but had to give it up when her children were born.

Iowa Senate GOP official: Harassment investigation is done

News

November 12th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A top official for Senate Republicans in the Iowa Legislature says an investigation into alleged sexual harassment within the office is complete, but there will be no report about it and no information will be shared with the public.

Ed Failor, senior aide to Senate Majority Leader Bill Dix, told The Associated Press on Friday the office has completed an internal investigation into allegations of sexual harassment highlighted during a trial this year involving a former staffer.

Failor says additional information cannot be shared publicly because it’s a personnel issue. Dix, a Shell Rock Republican, had indicated previously that a process for investigating harassment issues within the office was ongoing. But it’s never been clear how that would be conducted and what information, if any, would be shared with the public.
