Day number two of the 2013 Cass County Fair in Atlantic is packed with activities for the whole family. It begins with the beef weigh-in at 8-a.m.  The Rabbit Show and Horse shows gets underway at 9. In addition to having an opportunity to peruse the 4-H exhibits in the Community Center, persons attending the fair have the chance to visit with various vendors in the Commercial Exhibits building. Both begin at 10-a.m.

The Livestock Judging Contest gets underway at 3-p.m., with teams of 4-H and F-F-A members competing in three contests simultaneously. The big event for this evening, is the annual “Bull-O-Rama” and Bull Ride at 7:30, along with a donkey half-time show.

As always, there is NO Charge to attend the Cass County Fair, but your purchase of meals at the food stand are very much appreciated, to help support the Fair and continue to make it a unique, free event each year.

Police in Red Oak arrested a local woman Thursday evening on a charge of Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree. Officials say 18-year old Melody Marie Bentley, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 6:30-p.m., following an incident at Nishna Productions, Inc. (A vocational center for persons with disabilities), where a client became upset and agitated, and allegedly began to punch and kick the wall, causing damage to the drywall in the form of a large hole. Bentley was being held in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center in $1,000 bond.

Republican Congressman Steve King says he is “standing firm” in his opposition to amnesty for illegal immigrants, including children who were illegally brought into the country by their parents. House Speaker John Boehner — the top Republican in the House — used his weekly news conference to blast King for saying there are more drug smugglers than high school valedictorians among the kids brought into the U.S. illegally. Boehner called King’s comment “ignorant.” King responded during an appearance on an Omaha radio station, Thursday afternoon.

“Republican leadership should understand if they don’t want this amplified, then don’t amplify it,” King said. King blames “full-time, professional hypervenilators” for stirring up the controversy and King says many of his colleagues are giving him “silent” support. “When you couch the language in such a way that you’re careful not to offend anybody, then nobody’s paying attention either,” King says. “And I intended to offend the drug smugglers and it doesn’t bother my conscience one bit if it is does offend them, but I have no idea why anyone else would be offended.”

A group of undocumented youth who say they were brought into the country by their parents when they were children tried to deliver cantaloupes to King’s congressional office in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. One woman in the group called King’s comment “spiteful” and “racist.” King last week said for every valedictorian who would be eligible for legal status under the so-called DREAM Act, there are a hundred others who have “calves the size of cantaloupes” because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana on their back across the U.S./Mexican border.

King says he’s seen the drug runners with his own eyes as he’s visited the border and met with border patrol agents. “There’s no denying the fact of what I said,” King said “and so they attack the messenger because the facts undermine their DREAMer/amnesty agenda.” King suggested Boehner’s public rebuke is a “strong indication” the Republican House speaker favors some form of immigration reform. Democrats are calling on Boehner to pull King off the House Judiciary Committee, the panel that will first consider any proposed changes in immigration policy. King sent out an email to supporters Thursday afternoon, asking for contributions and accusing critics of twisting his words.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — A new police dog in patrolling the streets of Marshalltown. The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports that Raji has joined the police department. The 1½ -year-old is a German shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix from Slovakia.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the shooting of a Sioux City police officer. Jamal Dean changed his plea to guilty at a hearing yesterday and will be sentenced August 9th. Dean earlier had pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and four other charges related to the shooting of officer Kevin McCormick on April 29th. Although his patrol car was riddled with bullets and he was shot in the head, McCormick wasn’t seriously injured and has returned to work.

JANESVILLE, Iowa (AP) — The Bremer county Sheriff’s Office says a Minnesota woman has died in a two-vehicle crash caused by a wrong-way driver in northeast Iowa. The sheriff office says 51-year-old Tracy Lynn Willis of Faribault, Minnesota died in the Wednesday afternoon collision on Highway 218 north of Janesville. The truck driver, 58-year-old Verle Wygle of Waterloo, was taken to a a local hospital.

STORY CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Story City Antique Carousel is still turning after 100 years. KCCI-TV reports the carousel in the city’s North Park was built in New York in 1913. The carousel opens each day at noon until Labor Day. The cost is one dollar per ride.

A great crowd gathered Thursday (7/25) night at the grandstand at the Audubon County Fairgrounds for the crowning ceremony of the 2013 Audubon County Fair Queen. Nine candidates were vying for the crown including: Teagan Albright, Jan Asberry, Maddie Christensen, Megan Deist, Chansea Nelson, Jayce Nelson, Courtney Rudolph, Amanda Steffes, and Mary Wede.

The candidates attended a meal and interview event on Wednesday, July 17th at the Audubon County Extension Office to determine the winners.  The 2013 Audubon County Fair Queen is Jan Asberry, Daughter of John and Denise Asberry of Exira.  The first runner-up was Chansea Nelson, Daughter of Dave and Trudy Nelson of Exira.  The second runner-up was Maddie Christensen, Daughter of Tom and Teresa Christensen of Audubon.

The royalty were crowned by 2012 Queen Katelyn Asmus and now Jan Asberry will get to compete at the Iowa State Fair Queen Pageant August 6th-10th.  The Audubon County Fair continues through Tuesday, July 30th.

The Cass County Fair King and Queen contest took place on Thursday, July 25th at the Cass County Fairgrounds.  A large crowd waited out some rain at the end of the contest to find out the winners.   The 2013 Cass County Fair King was Tanner Potter of the Griswold Clubsters, son of Brent and Amy Potter.  The Prince was Blake Miller of the Grant Guys and Gals and CAM FFA, son of Gary and Shelly Miller.  Mr. Congeniality went to Clint Hansen of the Grove HOT and Atlantic FFA, son of Mike and Becky Dreager.

The 2013 Cass County Fair Queen title was awarded to Larissa Backhaus of the Griswold Clubsters and Griswold FFA, daughter of Bill and Jenny Backhaus.  Princess was Mikayla Somers of the Bear Grove Blazers, daughter of Guy and Kathy Somers.  Miss Congeniality went to Emily Jacobsen of the Bear Grove Blazers and Atlantic FFA. Emily is  the daughter of Mike Jacobsen and Darla Jacobsen.

Another award handed out was the KJAN/Brownfield Ag News Network Ag Youth Award.  That honor was given to Emily Jacobsen of Atlantic.  The Brownfield Ag News Network and KJAN partner in this award each year to honor outstanding youth and acknowledge their contribution to agriculture in the area.

The Cass County Fair continues through Tuesday, July 30.

The Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest of 31-year old Tyler Anthony Bond of Red Oak on a violation of Failure to Appear/Failure to Pay Child Support. Bond was transported to the Montgomery County Law Center and his bond has been set at $1,000.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of four people today (Thursday) on a variety of charges. An unnamed juvenile female from Villisca was arrested for Conspiracy to Deliver a Controlled Substance. No bond was set. Matthew Cross, of Corning, was arrested Thursday on a of Delivery of a Controlled Substance charge related to previous incidents in Adams County.

Sheriff’s officials say Jeremy Cross, of Corning, was arrested Thursday after deputies along with the Adams County K-9 unit and a Tri-County Narcotics officer executed a search warrant in Corning. During the search, items were located that led to Cross being charged with Conspiracy to Deliver Narcotics, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Child Endangerment. Cross was being held in the Adams County Jail without bond.

And, a probation check Thursday morning by deputies with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Unit and the Tri-County Narcotics Office at the residence of Gary Seaman, in Corning, led to his arrest. During the check Seaman was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia which resulted in charges of Violation Probation and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was being held in the jail without bond.

Officials at Cass County Memorial Hospital have announced the new entrance and parking lot for Rehabilitation Services patients will open Monday, July 29th, 2013.  Access to the area is by the Ambulance Drive off 10^th Street, at the west end of the hospital.  Pat Markham, CEO says the new parking area provides direct access into the Rehabilitation Services reception area, and that they are “Very pleased to open this access which will provide a close, flat entrance for the Rehab patients who often have mobility issues.”

The next step in the construction process will be to create an MRI suite in the former west lobby.  This will require the closing of the west parking lot and entrance (along 10^th Street, across from Atlantic Dental Center) from August 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013, in order to ensure patient, visitor and staff safety during the remodeling.  MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a service of the CCMH Diagnostic Imaging Department.  MRIs are currently available three days a week on a mobile unit.  The CCMH Board of Trustees made the decision to move the MRI inside as a permanent unit to enhance patient convenience by being having more flexibility in scheduling and not having to go outside in the winter for MRI exams.

Authorities in Page County are on the lookout for person allegedly involved in an assault late Wednesday night. According to Sheriff Lyle Palmer, at around 10-p.m., deputies were dispatched to 1672 A Avenue (approximately 1.5 miles north of Shenandoah), for a disturbance at the Valerie Kay Kalkas and David Ryan residence. The incident allegedly took place between Kalkas, Ryan, and another family member.  When Law Enforcement arrived, it was determined that the other family member involved had allegedly physically assaulted Ryan and Kalkas. 

The suspected family member left the scene, and was last seen by Ryan walking south from the residence on A Avenue towards Shenandoah.An extensive search of the area was conducted by Law Enforcement for the individual.  The search also continued to locations within the city limits of Shenandoah, but the individual was not located.  The investigation is ongoing and further information will be released when it is available.
