December 9th, 2021 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Two University of Iowa football student-athletes – junior center Tyler Linderbaum and senior defensive back Matt Hankins – were named to the Walter Camp All-America Team on Thursday.  Linderbaum was selected to the first-team, while Hankins was a second-team honoree.

Linderbaum (6-foot-3, 290-pounds) has started 34 consecutive games at center after starting his Hawkeye career at defensive lineman as a true freshman. Iowa has posted a 26-8 record during that span.

Iowa won its final six games in 2020 and began the 2021 season with six straight wins. The Hawkeyes closed the regular season with four straight victories to earn the Big Ten’s West Division championship.

The Solon, Iowa, native was named the Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year in the Big Ten, while earning first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season. He won the Rimington Trophy awarded to the nation’s top center and was a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy.

Hankins started 37 consecutive games in the Iowa secondary from 2018-21 before going down with a season-ending injury following the Hawkeyes’ 27-22 victory over Minnesota.  The Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist has four interceptions in 2021.

The Lewisville, Texas, native was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the Rose Bowl Game Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, and the Thorpe Award Player of the Week following Iowa’s 23-20 win over No. 4 Penn State. Hankins had five tackles and a fourth quarter interception in Iowa’s win over Penn State. He had two interceptions in Iowa’s 27-17 win at No. 9 Iowa State.

The 15th-ranked Hawkeyes will face No. 22 Kentucky in the 2022 VRBO Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Florida. Kickoff is set for noon (CT) from Camping World Stadium. The game will be televised on ABC.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior center Tyler Linderbaum has been named winner of the Rimington Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s premier center in college football.

The center with the most first-team votes on three All-America teams (Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News, and Football Writers Association of America) determines the winner of the Rimington Trophy.

Linderbaum (6-foot-3, 290-pounds) will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy banquet in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Jan. 15.

“It is an honor to be recognized with the Rimington Trophy, and to be the first Iowa Hawkeye to earn this honor,” said Linderbaum. “I would like to thank my teammates, Coach Kirk Ferentz, Coach George Barnett as my position coach, and all the staff with Iowa football. I feel very fortunate to represent Iowa football in joining a long list of outstanding players who have previously earned this award. We have enjoyed a very enjoyable and successful season, and I look forward to preparing for and competing in the Citrus Bowl with my coaches and teammates.”

Ten Hawkeyes have earned national Player of the Year honors on 11 occasions under Kirk Ferentz.

The Solon, Iowa, native was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy a year ago and is the first player in program history to receive the award.

Austin Blythe (2015) and Bruce Nelson (2002) were previously finalists for the award.

Linderbaum has started 34 consecutive games at center for the Hawkeyes after playing as a defensive lineman as a true freshman. Iowa has posted a 26-8 record during that span. The Hawkeyes won their final six games in 2020 and began the 2021 season with six straight wins.

Linderbaum was one of four finalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award and one of three finalists for the Outland Trophy. He was named first-team All-Big Ten by league coaches and media, and was selected as the Big Ten Conference Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year.

The 15th-ranked University of Iowa football team will face No. 22 Kentucky at the 2022 VRBO Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Florida. Kickoff is set for noon (CT) from Camping World Stadium. The game will be televised on ABC.

District facilities update – Atlantic Public Schools

News, Sports

December 9th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic School Board, Wednesday night heard an update on the District’s Athletic Facilities project. FRK Architects’ Principal/Owner Tom Wollan said some final project items are being wrapped-up, thanks to the mild weather.

Wollan acknowledged that’s it’s “Been a long haul,” though, and that “It’s been a struggle.” He said they appreciate the District’s patience, and indicated Wednesday night’s meeting marked a “milestone night,” with regard to the contractor’s four Certificates of “Substantial Completion,” of the projects.

“Substantial completion,” he said, means “That’s when the warranty will start on the project and all the items that have one-year warranties from the contractor…” Wollan said a key thing for the Board to be aware of, is that the District is still holding on to five-percent of the project construction costs, “for retainage.” That amounts to roughly $500,000, which will not be released to the contractors until the District is “comfortable and confident that all items are complete to your satisfaction.”

The contractor can and likely will apply for”partial retainage release,”so that those parties who completed their projects satisfactorily can be paid. Superintendent Steve Barber some of the things they are holding the contractor accountable for is some concrete work and issues associated with that. Wollan says that warranty periods for some of those items has passed, but since the issues were identified during the warranty period, the issues are considered to be “Punch-list” items that the contractor is responsible to have fixed before they are signed-off on.

Wollan said the Atlantic School District is not the only district in the state struggling to deal with the primary contractor for project satisfaction. Other district’s, he said, have similar issues. Despite the delays and issues with construction, Board member Nick Hunt said “We do have a final project that looks nice, and I think the community and everyone appreciates it.”

That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. Ashley Joens had 26 points as the Cyclones improve to 9-1.

Fennelly says the Cyclones made the key plays down the stretch to earn their first win in the series since 2015.

Caitlin Clark led Iowa with 26 as the Hawkeyes fall to 5-2.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. The Hawkeyes connected on just under 41 percent for the game, including nine of 27 from three point range.

No. 17 Iowa State men host Iowa Thursday night

Sports

December 9th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The 17th ranked Iowa State men look to stay unbeaten at home tonight (Thursday night), against Iowa. ISU is 8-0 and has dropped three straight to the Hawkeyes.

That’s Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger who says the Cyclones have focused on the same things that got them off to an 8-0 start.

It will be a Cyclone team that rides defense and rebounding against an Iowa team that averages more than 90 points per game.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery has been impressed with how quickly the Cyclones have jelled.

McCaffery says while ISU has a new roster it is a talented one.

McCaffery says defense is where it starts for the Cyclones.

McCaffery wants to find a way to get Jordan Bohannon more shots. The senior guard has only attempted three shots from distance in the last two games.

2022 hunting, fishing license on sale Dec. 15; duck, goose and dove hunters now required to register with HIP

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

December 8th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Des Moines, Iowa) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports esident hunting, fishing and other licenses for 2022 are available beginning Dec. 15. The menu of license options includes the popular Outdoor Combo annual resident hunting/fishing/habitat combo license for $55; the Angler’s Special three-year fishing license for $62; and the Hunter’s Special three-year hunting license with habitat included for $101.

Also available is the Bonus Line option for $14 allowing resident and nonresident anglers to fish with one more line in addition to the two lines allowed with the regular fishing license.

Beginning Dec. 15, hunters who purchase a 2022 license and plan to pursue migratory game birds will be required to register for Harvest Information Program (HIP) either through the Go Outdoors Iowa app on their smartphone, through a link at www.iowadnr.gov/waterfowl or at www.gooutdoorsiowa.com and answering the questions. Migratory game birds mean more than ducks and geese; it includes ducks, geese, coots, doves, woodcock, rails, and snipe.

Once registered, hunters will need to physically write a confirmation number on the line provided at the top of the license as proof of registration. The HIP registration can be found in the GoOutdoorsIowa mobile app by clicking on the purchase license button, and then logging in to your account. Registering for HIP is a federal requirement for all migratory bird hunters.

The change was necessitated because registering through license vendors at the time of purchase has been inconsistent. Deer, turkey, and upland game hunters are not required to register for HIP and do not need to take the survey or record a confirmation number. Registering for HIP can be done later, if the hunter changes their mind.

Licenses are available at 700 locations across the state, and on the DNR website at www.iowadnr.gov/GoOutdoorsIowa.

Hunting and fishing are often enjoyed with family and friends. A fishing or hunting license makes a great stocking stuffer. Upgrade your paper license to a durable hard card with custom art from Iowa artists for only $5.

Licenses purchased for 2021 expire on Jan. 10.
