Graceland University wins semifinal, will play for National Championship tonight

Graceland University in Lamoni will play for the national championship on Tuesday night in Men’s College Basketball NAIA Division I.

The Yellowjackets rallied in the second half of their semifinal win over LSU Shreveport (LA) 87-80 on Monday night.

LT Davis led the Yellowjackets with 28 points. Will Nelson added 22 and Dalton Payton had 14. Jeremy Deemer also had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The 5th Seeded Yellowjackets outscored the Pilots by 19 in the second half to pick up the win.

Graceland will now square off against LSU-Alexandria in the National Championship game tonight at 7:00pm. The Generals defeated another Iowa school William Penn 84-75 in the other semifinal on Monday to reach the title game.

Tuesday’s championship will be available through a streaming broadcast on ESPN3 from Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium.

Gubernatorial Candidate, Dr. Andy McGuire To Address Cass County Democrats tonight

Iowa Gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Andy McGuire will address the Cass County Democrats during their monthly meeting this evening (March 20th). The meeting takes place in the Cass County Courthouse basement meeting room, beginning at 7-p.m.  During the meeting, McGuire will discuss her vision for Iowa’s future including her 7-point plan to combat Iowa’s mental health and substance abuse crisis. Dr. McGuire’s candidacy has been endorsed by former Presidential candidate, Howard Dean  and over 40 health care professionals in Iowa.

McGuire was born in Waterloo. She’s the mother of seven children, and raised a family while training to be a doctor.   • 1 lb. ground ham or turkey ham
  • 2 lbs. lean ground beef
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk

Mix ham, beef, eggs, crumbs and milk well.  Put in loaf pan and bake 1 1/2 hours at 325 degrees.  During last half hour, put sauce on top and return to oven.  Serves 1.

SAUCE:

  • 1 can tomato soup
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard

Mix well.

Man, woman imprisoned for Davenport credit union robberies

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Two people have been imprisoned for their roles in Davenport credit union robberies. The Quad-City Times reports that 60-year-old Kevin Denney, of Davenport, and 32-year-old Cynthia Niebuhr-Hartley, of Muscatine, were sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Davenport. The judge gave both 28 months in prison and ordered Denney to pay more than $24,500 in restitution and Niebuhr-Hartley to pay nearly $6,000. Denney’s son, David Denney, also has pleaded guilty to robbery and conspiracy. He’s scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday.

Court documents say various combinations of the three were involved in robbing an Ascentra Credit Union office in August 2016 and a Vibrant Credit Union office in November 2016 and again on March 30 last year.

Creston man arrested on a moving violation Mon. evening

A traffic stop at around 6:10-p.m. Monday, in Creston, resulted in the arrest of 21-year old Ryan Parmenter, of Creston. Parmenter was taken into custody for Driving While Suspended. He was later released from the Union County Jail on a $300 bond.

Sioux City approves at least $12M in aid to hotel project

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The City Council in Sioux City has approved at least $12 million in assistance for a $56 million project to convert two historic downtown buildings into luxury apartments and a nearly 150-room hotel. Developer Lew Weinberg and St. Louis-based developer Restoration St. Louis plan to turn the former Warrior Hotel and Davidson buildings into a Marriott brand hotel.

The council voted 4-0 Monday for a financial package that includes a partially forgivable $5 million loan, a portion of the city’s share of hotel-motel taxes generated by the facility, property tax incentives, and reduced rates for city ramp parking. Weinberg says he thinks the work will begin this summer.

Man wanted on nationwide warrant arrested in Taylor County

A traffic stop last Saturday at the intersection of 290th and Quail Avenue, in Taylor County, resulted in the arrest of a man wanted on a nationwide warrant. 35-year old Jacob Lee Rybolt, was arrested on a  warrant out of New Mexico for Embezzlement (over $2500). Rybolt was being held at the Taylor County Jail pending extradition.
