Man arrested in southeast Iowa hit-and-run accident

News

June 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DRAKESVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have arrested a man suspected of fleeing a southeast Iowa accident in which a 9-year-old boy died and his brother was injured. The Davis County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that 41-year-old Terry Petary, of Drakesville, is charged with vehicular homicide. The Iowa State Patrol says a pickup truck struck the boy and his brother a little before 10 p.m. Sunday as they walked on a rural road west of Drakesville. A patrol accident report says the truck came up from behind, struck the two and then left. The Sheriff’s Office says the pickup was found in West Grove, and Petary was detained there.

The patrol report identified the dead boy as 9-year-old Merlin Beechy and his brother as 12-year-old Nathan Beechy, of rural Drakesville.

Most of state’s crops looking good while wet fields put others in danger

Ag/Outdoor

June 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The U-S Department of Agriculture’s weekly update on Iowa crops is usually strictly business and released after the grain markets close for the day. Monday’s report had a bit of tongue-in-cheek message. It noted Iowa farmers had only two-days suitable for field work during the past week and says activities included “checking rain gauges and assessing flood damage.” Iowa State University Agronomist, Paul Kassel, says many north and central Iowa corn and soybean fields are under water. “It’s getting kind of serious really. People have had eight-ten–twelve inches of rain in the last ten, twelve days. Kind of the north-central area really,” Kassel says, ” There’s a lot drowned out. So the corn and soybean crop will die from that.”

Once the crops die, the farmers have a decision to make. “And people will be faced with replanting parts of fields and that kind of thing,” Kassel says.  He says if things don’t dry out soon, there may not be any option to salvage any kind of crop.  “We’re not out of time, but by the time it dries out, it might be too late for that. So, there you’re faced with zero production from those drowned out areas,” Kassel says.

Despite that extensive crop flooding — Monday’s U-S-D-A update continues listing about 80 percent of Iowa’s corn and soybean acreage in good-to-excellent condition.

Oil spill not expected to disrupt water supplies downstream

News

June 26th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Residents in major cities downstream from a northwest Iowa tanker car derailment say they’re confident their municipal drinking water is safe even as crews try to contain an estimated 230,000 gallons of oil. Officials in Omaha and Council Bluffs said Monday, they’re monitoring the situation and could switch to well water if oil is detected in the Missouri River, which provides most of their water. But they say they’ve been assured by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources that the oil spilled into the Little Rock River will be contained before reaching the Missouri River.

Others cities, including Sioux City, Iowa, use groundwater and don’t expect problems.
