Iowa seeks presidential disaster declaration for 30 counties

News

August 2nd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s governor has signed a letter asking President Donald Trump for a presidential disaster declaration for 30 Iowa counties – including Adair and Dallas, locally – that sustained significant damage from severe storms and flooding from June 6 through July 2.
Gov. Kim Reynolds requested funding under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance Program. Funding from that program is used to rebuild damaged infrastructure, including roads, bridges, culverts and other public facilities, or to cover costs of emergency work during and debris removal after severe weather. A preliminary assessment of the 30 counties estimates more than $16 million worth of damage that could be eligible under the program.
Reynolds also requested other federal help, including funding under FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program for Buchanan, Dickinson, Polk and Winnebago counties.

Soybean growers push their product during European trip

Ag/Outdoor

August 2nd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A delegation of Iowa Soybean Association members spoke with reporters from Europe Wednesday, where they are on a trade mission to sell more of their product. The trip includes stops in Ireland (Dublin and Belfast), Denmark, Hungary and Austria. I-S-A president Bill Shipley of Nodaway, says talks have been positive — but they haven’t talked about numbers. “They would like to increase their inputs from the United States — but nothing specific,” Shipley says.

Dave Walton of Wilton says recent talks between the administration and the European Union have helped with the discussion of soybeans. “I think the sense that we’ve gotten from this side is that trade has always been open. They have sourced South American beans in the past and now it makes more economic sense to bring them in from the United States,” Walton says. “The agreement to continue to talk about some of the trade issues bewteen the E-U and the U-S has kind of eased some of those trade issues. I think in general we are going to see more trade between the U-S and E-U.”

The delegation was asked if they think the E-U can make up the deficit if the trade war with China continues. Grant Kimberly says there is good demand worldwide for soybeans — and that will help. “China of course is by far and away the largest buyer, and its hard to completely offset all that if we were to need to offset a majority of that,” Kimberly says. “So, I guess time will tell. It’s just too early in the process to see where this will all go.”

They were asked if there was any talk of the administration’s actions on trade. Shipley says he was surprised that it wasn’t a big point of discussion. “There’s a few comments made which we all expected that. We expected a lot worse if you want to know the truth,” Shipley says.

He says things have gone pretty well as they have talked about the basics of getting more soybeans into the European market. The delegation met with representatives of the Irish Grain & Feed Association, Northern Ireland Grain Trade Association, Denmark Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Danish Agriculture & Food Council, Budapest Ministry of Agriculture Department and International Relations, Hungarian Grain and Feed Association, as well as several farm visits across the countries.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tyler O’Neill hit a tiebreaking pinch single in the sixth inning and five rookie relievers dominated beginning in the third to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Colorado Rockies 6-3. Luke Weaver allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings before handing off to the Cardinals bullpen. Daniel Poncedeleon followed with 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and Austin Gomber, Dakota Hudson, Jordan Hicks and Mike Mayers closed it out. Gomber got his first career victory with a scoreless inning.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs split up linebacker duties this season by hiring a coach for the inside and outside positions. The idea is to better tutor a group that struggled last season. It also has helped the Chiefs more quickly rebuild their linebacker corps after the departure of stalwarts Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali.

CHICAGO (AP) — Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and drove in four, helping the Kansas City Royals pound the sloppy Chicago White Sox 10-5. Gordon also walked and scored during Kansas City’s five-run fifth. Brett Phillips added two hits and Ryan O’Hearn singled in a run in his second major league game as the last-place Royals posted consecutive wins for the first time since they won three in a row from July 20-22, matching their season high.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State announced on Wednesday that construction on its new football performance center is expected to start next spring. The complex, which the Iowa Board of Regents approved in April, will include an academic and nutrition center as well as a new plaza and stadium entrance. Athletic director Jamie Pollard says it’s not yet clear when the project might be complete. Iowa State bowled in its other end zone with new seating and a sports bar ahead of the 2015 season.

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have activated defensive end Randy Gregory after a year away from football on a substance-abuse suspension. Gregory has played in just two of the past 32 regular-season games because of multiple suspensions. Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated him not long before the Cowboys reported to training camp. The 25-year-old former Nebraska star participated in a walkthrough practice for the first time Wednesday.

Scammers trying to take advantage as new Medicare cards go out

News

August 2nd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — New Medicare cards are going out to all Iowans in the program and that’s opened the opportunity for scammers to try and take advantage of the change. A spokesperson for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Julie Brookhart, says the new cards will no longer have your Social Security number on them. She says the cards are being mailed out and you should not listen if someone tells you something different.

“Bottom line is, Medicare is not calling anyone about the cards, you are just going to get the card in the mail. So, any call you would get is a scam,” Brookhart says. Brookhart says scammers will try all sorts of things to get your money or personal information.”We’ve had people say you have to pay for the new card to get the card,” Brookhart says, “we’ve had people say ‘give me your old number’ to get the new card. Or if you don’t give me your information we are going to cancel your health benefits — and those are all scams.”

Brookhart says the new cards are free and all you have to do is bring it in from the mailbox. “There have been some agents and brokers calling people — most agents and brokers are very upstanding — we’ve had a few bad actors saying ‘If you set up an appointment with me I can get you the card quicker.’ That is not true, because it is the Medicare agency that is mailing out the new card,” according to Brookhart.

The are more than 600-thousand Iowans who are on Medicare. Brookhart says everyone in Iowa should be getting their card by they middle of this month.
