Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Before the season, Kansas State and Iowa State seemed like they each had a reasonable chance to compete for a spot in the Big 12 title game. The Wildcats and Cyclones now seem like they might already be out of the league race. Iowa State and K-State entered October at the bottom of the league standings, along with Kansas.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s descent from the top of the college football hierarchy is going on two decades. The Cornhuskers’ 0-4 start still seems jarring, and not just to people inside the program and the fan base that has sold out Memorial Stadium every game since 1962. Former Kansas coach Glen Mason says he never thought he would see the day when a Nebraska team was struggling so much.

UNDATED (AP) — Some of the Big Ten’s top defenses stick to old-school principles in this era of high-scoring, pass-happy offenses. The best ones are big, stout and focused first on stopping the run. The conference has three of the top seven run defenses and four of the top 18 in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Six of the league’s 14 teams are in the top 50.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill called his quarterback slow. Their coach, Andy Reid, said his quarterback’s voice was “froggish.” And Patrick Mahomes insists he can dish the trash talk just as well as he can receive it. It’s all part of a unique locker room banter that has helped keep things light as Kansas City rolls up win after win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Jaguars have the NFL’s best defense, led by a backfield featuring star cornerbacks A.J. Bouye and Jalen Ramsey. The Chiefs counter with the highest-scoring offense, led by early MVP front-runner Patrick Mahomes under center. Their matchup at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday is arguably the game of the week, if not the game of the season so far.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — World champion welterweight Terence Crawford says he is eager to make unbeaten challenger Jose Benavidez Jr. eat his words when they meet in the ring in Omaha, Nebraska, on Oct. 13. A heated confrontation between Benavidez and Crawford in February was a major topic in a teleconference to promote the fight. Crawford says he accepted the fight because he wants to give the Phoenix native a chance to show what he’s made of.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CDT

WAUKON, Iowa (AP) — A northeast Iowa man convicted of fatally shooting his stepfather at the home they shared has been sentenced to up to 50 years in prison. The Courier reports that 32-year-old John Quanrude was sentenced Monday in Allamakee County District Court. He was convicted last month of second-degree murder in the April death of 60-year-old Dean Russell. Quanrude will spend at least 35 years behind bars before he is eligible for parole.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A federal judge has dealt a blow to the defense for an Iowa youth basketball coach charged with secretly recording his teenage players undressing. Judge C.J. Williams ruled Thursday that the seizure of a USB device from former Iowa Barnstormers coach Greg Stephen didn’t violate his privacy rights. The ruling means prosecutors can use videos found on the device against Stephen, who is charged with transporting and possessing child pornography and sexually exploiting minors

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds and Democratic challenger Fred Hubbell will meet in the Des Moines area for their first debate. The candidates for governor will debate at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ankeny campus of Des Moines Area Community College. The debate is being organized by KCCI-TV and The Des Moines Register. It will be aired live on KCCI. The campaigns also have agreed to debates Oct. 17 in Sioux City and Oct. 21 in Davenport.

FOREST CITY, Iowa (AP) — A group that studies paranormal activity wants to examine the former Winnebago County jail, but officials worry that allowing the visit could create liability problems. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports two men from a group based in Forest City asked the Winnebago County Board if they could spend the night in the former jail.

Atlantic travels to face Greene County on Friday on KJAN

Sports

October 4th, 2018 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans football team will travel to Jefferson on Friday evening for a meeting with the Greene County Rams. The Trojans (2-4, 0-2) are coming in to the game on a three game losing streak, including back to back loses at home to open up district play. The Trojans have struggled to get consistent offensive production and haven’t prevented big plays from the opposing offenses during the losing skid. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said his team will need to get hit some big plays of their own this week against the Rams.

When it comes to slowing down the Rams balanced offense, Coach McDermott said they will need to stop the run first.

Greene County (5-1, 1-1) lost their first game of the season last week in a tight game against Kuemper Catholic. Rams Head Coach Mitch Moore said a key for his team this week will be to contain Atlantic quarterback Chase Mullenix.

The Rams have been able to achieve some great balance on offense with quarterback Brent Riley throwing for 1,266 yards and running backs Clint Dennhardt and Colby Kafer combining for 955 yards on the ground. Coach Moore said he thinks what stands out from the Atlantic defense is how hard they play but he thinks his team needs to just worry about doing their job to have offensive success.

The Trojans and Rams have moved their scheduled kickoff up to 5:00pm with the anticipation of severe weather possible Friday night. The freshman game has been canceled.

We’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN with pregame at 4:30pm and kickoff at 5:00pm. You can catch the game on-air, online, on the web app, or watch live video on our Facebook page.

Our weekly chat with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview will now air at 3:45pm, followed by our high school pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 4:00pm. Stay tuned after the game for the Iowa High School Scoreboard Show from 10:00pm-11:30pm.

(DES MOINES) – The Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) Board of Directors recently approved more than $3.9 million in grants to assist 50 agencies with homelessness assistance initiatives during the 2019 calendar year. The funding is made available through the federal Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program and the state Shelter Assistance Fund (SAF).

The Iowa Finance Authority conducted a combined competition for the two programs and applications were scored in several categories, including project design, experience and capacity, community partnerships, performance, budget and grants management.
