Clarinda woman arrested on drug & other charges in Red Oak

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a woman from Page County was arrested Friday night on drug and other charges. Deputies arrested 35-year old Sara Jane Carnes, of Clarinda, following a traffic stop at Highway 71 and High Street, in Villisca, at around 7:10-p.m.  Carnes faces charges that include Possession of drug paraphernalia, Driving while Revoked and Failure to provide proof of SR-22 insurance. All charges are simple misdemeanors. Carnes was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $300 cash bond.

Kemin leader believes more cannabis study could uncover more benefits

(Radio Iowa) — The leader of the food products company that created a subsidiary to become the first to produce medical marijuana in the state believes there can be a lot more good things ahead. Kemin Industries C-E-O Chris Nelson says more research into medical cannabis could yield results. “There’s no question, over 400 compounds are known to be contained within cannabis. Only a few have been explored medically. We really believe that there are some other cannabanoids within the material that can probably affect some types of diseases that we haven’t even explored as of yet,” Nelson says.

He compares it to research done in the food additive field.”One great example — our supplement lutien made by Kemmin — we knew it was good for eyesight, but now some of the latest data shows that it helps with memory,” Nelson says. “Again you start in and you start to apply these things and you can often times discover things that were completely unknown.”

Nelson says bringing science into the equation can go a long way towards changing what people think about the issue. “There’s know doubt that as we know more about T-H-C and know more about the various cannabnoids within cannabis we’re going to have much more of an idea of what we can apply it too — and I think people’s attitudes will also change simultaneously,” according to Nelson.

Medical cannabis board votes to recommend autism as condition for medical marijuana

(Radio Iowa) — The state medical cannabis board has approved recommending that one of four conditions proposed to it be approved for access to medical marijuana. The board recommended that children with severe autism be given access — while deciding not to add P-T-S-D, bipolar disorder, or A-D-H-D as qualifying conditions The eight-member board voted after hearing emotional testimony from a mother who says she’s tried everything to treat her daughter’s autism. The issue now goes to the Board of Medicine for final approval.

Randy Mayer oversees the state’s medical cannabis program. “I think all the physicians have indicated a willingness to reconsider any of these conditions if there’s more information available.” The board did not recommend any change to the three-percent T-H-C cap on medical cannabis produced for sale in the state. Advocates and cannabis producers say that limits the program and pain relief.

Medical marijuana advocate Sally Gaer of West Des Moines says the T-H-C cap is one of the thing she’ll keep pushing to have changed. She says she’ll push for adding more conditions to those approved for medical cannabis use, getting rid of the T-H-C cap, and looking at other cannabanoids that she says could help with other types of diseases.

Gaer made her comments Thursday, following the ribbon cutting ceremony for the state’s first medical producer.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa guard Kathleen Doyle broke her left hand during practice and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks. The 13th-ranked Hawkeyes say that Doyle, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, fractured the third and fourth metacarpals in her non-shooting hand. Doyle, a junior, averaged 11.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in 30 games last season, and she led the Big Ten with 7.5 assists per game in conference action last season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — After a pair of wins, Nebraska’s confidence is high for its matchup with reeling Ohio State. The No. 8 Buckeyes had had a bye week to stew over the improbable Oct. 20 loss to Purdue when their running game and defense were inexplicably absent. Nebraska is improving but will come into Ohio Stadium an 18-point underdog. The Huskers are led by a freshman dual-threat quarterback and senior tailback who have help revive their running game.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Both TCU and K-State have to win at least three of their last four games just to be bowl eligible. The two Big 12 teams play each other Saturday. Both are 3-5. TCU has never had a four-game losing streak in Gary Patterson’s 18 seasons as head coach. The Frogs have lost three in a row and five of six. Kansas State is coming off a 51-14 loss at Oklahoma that was its fourth loss in five games under veteran coach Bill Snyder.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No. 13 Florida is counting on a much better performance against Missouri this season. A lopsided loss to the Tigers was the low point for Florida in the 2017 football season. The Gators had just parted ways with Jim McElwain and believed they would end a three-game losing streak at the Tigers. Florida receiver Josh Hammond says “the one thing about SEC ball is you play those guys every year. I think a lot of guys remember that loss and remember the feeling.”

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan, Baylor’s Kalani Brown and Iowa’s Megan Gustafson represent a small but valuable group of traditional centers who can dominate basketball games from in the post. Their presence is a big reason all their teams enter the preseason with expectations: Baylor is ranked No. 4, Mississippi State is No. 6 and Iowa is No. 13.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A lawyer representing a high-profile Iowa murder suspect has removed a Facebook post in which he attacked another one of his clients as an “idiot” and “terrible criminal” who deserved to be jailed. Attorney Chad Frese says his post is being misinterpreted but that he doesn’t believe it violated ethical rules. Frese and his wife are representing Cristhian Bahena Rivera, who is charged with killing 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts. In the post, he described a dispute with another one of his clients.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — Marshalltown Schools has paid nearly $603,000 in IRS penalties after a district employee failed to properly process payroll tax deposits for 14 months. The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports that former payroll tax specialist Allison Meyer resigned in June after the issue came to light. Officials say the district was required to make payroll tax deposits the day after employees were paid, but that didn’t happen.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A jury has found a Waterloo man guilty of manslaughter and child endangerment resulting in death for the 2017 beating death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son. The Courier reports that Walter Cordell Williams was convicted Friday in Black Hawk County District Court. The 24-year-old man faces more than 50 years in prison when he’s sentenced at a later date.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa father on trial for murder in the gruesome death of his infant son has taken the stand in his own defense and blamed the baby’s mother. The Courier reported that 29-year-old Zachary Paul Koehn took the stand Friday, saying he “put his trust in the wrong person” in expecting the boy’s mother to care for him. But under cross-examination from the prosecutor, Koehn admitted he took better care of his dog than he did 4-month-old Sterling Koehn.

AHSTW Tops Newman Catholic

AHSTW is heading to the UNI-Dome next week for the Class A state semi-finals after a home win Friday night over Newman Catholic.  The Vikings scored first and posted a 31-14 win.  Gabe Pauley scored a pair of touchdowns, including a 56 yard run on the Vikings first offensive play of the game.  Blake Osbahr made a leaping interception in the end zone to stop a Newman Catholic drive in the first quarter after the Vikings had taken the 7-0 lead.

Osbahr said the Vikings had a good week of preparation.

AHSTW picked off 4 passes, including two by Drake Partridge.  Vikings coach Davis Pattee said the interceptions were big in helping his team control the game.

After falling behind in their last two games and having to rally to win, Pattee said it was nice to get an early lead.

Korbin Martin scored on a 41 yard jet sweep and Brayton Tuma caught a 64 yard pass from Osbahr.  AHSTW also got a 28 yard field goal from Kyle Brannon as they improve to 11-0.  Next up will be a Friday, November 9th 1:00 pm match-up with 10-1 Edgewood-Colesburg.  We’ll have that game on KJAN from Cedar Falls.

Fremont-Mills starts fast and rolls past Exira-EHK

Fremont-Mills opened up a 28 point lead early and rolled to a 61-20 victory over Exira-EHK in the 8-Man Quarterfinals on Friday night. The Knights scored on their first three possessions to open the game strong. Mason Vanatta set the tone early with a 65-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game. The Spartans turned the ball over on downs on their first possession. Seth Malcom scored on a two yard run on the next possession for Fremont-Mills and Vanatta added another on their next possession with a 36-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.  The Spartans got their first score with 2:20 left in the half to make it a 28-7 game at that point. The Knights quickly answered back as Austin Gartner ran the ensuing kickoff back to the Spartans 5 yard line and Vanatta punched it in on the next play to push the lead to 34-7 by the half.

The Knights would eventually get a large enough lead in the second half to invoke the 35-point running clock rule and the fourth quarter ran away quickly.

Vanatta finished the game with 5 rushing touchdowns and one passing. Seth Malcom finished with two rushing touchdowns on the night. The Knights improved to 10-1 and avenged their opening season loss to the Spartans. Fremont-Mills heads back to the UNI-Dome for the semifinals for the second straight season. The Knights are set to play New London on Thursday at Noon in the Semifinals.

Exira-EHK has their season end with a record of 9-2 and says goodbye to a strong senior class.
