DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Animal rescue officials in Iowa are asking for the public’s help in tracking down whoever tossed an emaciated dog trapped in a kennel into a trash bin. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa says in a news release Friday that a passerby found the Chihuahua Nov. 2 in a dumpster in Des Moines’ River Bend neighborhood and took the starving dog to Animal Rescue League.

Vets there say the dog, dubbed “Oscar,” weighed just 4 pounds and was suffering from a loss of muscle mass and fur as well as intestinal parasites. His fur was stained from being caged in his own filth for a long period.

The League says Oscar is recovering and regained 25 percent of his body weight in the first two days of treatment.

Vikings to the ‘Ship, AHSTW beats Edgewood-Colesburg in Class A Semis

Sports

The AHSTW Vikings are heading to the Class A State Football Championship next Thursday after beating Edgewood-Colesburg 39-12 on Friday afternoon at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. AHSTW will take an unblemished 12-0 record into the title game against the also undefeated and 12-0 Hudson Pirates next Thursday at 1:30pm at the UNI-Dome.

AHSTW had to work hard to get to the next round. Edgewood-Colesburg controlled the first quarter of the game and scored first on a long 13-play touchdown drive on their second possession. Quarterback Ethan Streicher capped off that drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 6-0 after a failed two point conversion.

AHSTW changed the tide in the second quarter, starting with a 68-yard bomb from Blake Osbahr to Drake Partridge to get them on the board and lead 7-6 with 7:20 left in the half. Gabe Pauley would then add two touchdown runs on the next two AHSTW possessions to push the lead to 22-6. The AHSTW coaching staff then wisely used a couple timeouts to make Edgewood-Colesburg punt the ball at the end of the half. A bad snap on the punt allowed AHSTW to take the punter Streicher down at the 11-yard line with :17 left in the half. On the next play Osbahr found Partridge in the end zone for another score to make it 29-6 at half.

AHSTW scored on the opening possession of the second half on another Pauley run and later added a 34-yard field goal to cap their scoring. Edgewood-Colesburg got one second half touchdown on a pass from Streicher to Spencer Staner.

The Vikings will now try to win their first title as AHSTW. The last title for the program was Avo-Ha in 1974.

We’ll have coverage of that Class A Championship game between AHSTW and Hudson next Thursday with pregame at 12:30pm and kickoff set for 1:30pm.

Listen to postgame interviews with Head Coach Davis Pattee, Gabe Pauley, Blake Osbahr, and Drake Partridge below.

$1M Mega Millions winner claims prize in Iowa

News

November 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — An Illinois man has claimed the $1 million prize he won the same day someone else won $1.54 billion in the Mega Millions lottery game. Iowa Lottery officials say 73-year-old Bob Hollenback, of Milan, Illinois, bought the ticket at a Hy-Vee gas station in Davenport. He said Thursday he already had a ticket for the Oct. 23 drawing, but something told him to go ahead and buy another.

It matched the first five numbers drawn but missed on the Mega Ball number. Another ticket bought in South Carolina matched all the numbers for the jackpot. He and his wife, Jeanne, say they plan to share the winnings with family, take a trip and buy some land.
