Prosecutors in Pottawattamie County say a Council Bluffs man has been charged with a felony after prosecutors accused him of choking, beating and kicking a 15-year-old boy after a traffic accident. The Omaha World-Herald reports 35-year old Ryan D. Linehan was driving a white Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 2800 block of North Broadway in north-central Council Bluffs just before midnight April 25th. He’s accused of passing a black 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck, cutting off the pickup and striking it with his Jeep. The pickup’s teenage driver, who has a school permit and was on his way home from a function at St. Albert High School, pulled over to exhange insurance information.

Two men, one from Pennsylvania, the other from western Iowa, were injured Tuesday evening, during a collision on the Interstate, in Pottawattamie County. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2014 Ford rental truck was stopped along the shoulder of I-680/-29 wwestbound at mile marker 40, and was about to re-enter the I-680. In doing so, the truck, driven by 44-year old Bernard Oguto, of Whitehall, PA., blocked both lanes of traffic. It was struck by a westbound 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 35-year old Jason Parker, of Persia. Both drivers were transported to Mercy Hospital by Minden Rescue. Their injuries were described as minor. The accident happened at around 5:10-p.m.

The Montgomery County Fair Board will once again sponsor the open class Bucket/Bottle Calf show at the Montgomery County Fair. The open class Bucket/Bottle Calf show is open to all kindergarten through 3rd graders in Montgomery County. Any newborn or orphan calf, steer or heifer, daily or beef, that was calved between March 1st and May 15th may be shown.

Calf must be bucket or bottle fed. The Bucket/Bottle Calf show will be held on Sunday, July 19th at 2:00 pm with check-in from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Bucket/Bottle Calf packets can be picked up at the Montgomery County Extension and Outreach Office at 400 Bridge Street.

In an update to our earlier reports, the Iowa Department of Public Safety late Tuesday afternoon released the name of a teenaged driver involved in a shooting and chase in Harrison County. Officials say 17-year old Chauncy Jewett, of Sioux City, was the driver of a vehicle that sped away from Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement Officer Derek Floerchinger, Monday afternoon.

The incident began at around 12:34-p.m., when Floerchinger located a vehicle parked along the side of I-29 south bound near mile marker 90 in Harrison County.  Officer Floerchinger stopped to conduct a motorist assist.  Officer Floerchinger made contact with the Jewett, who initially provided a false Iowa Driver’s License.  During questioning by Officer Floerchinger, the teen put the car in gear and sped away.  Officer Floerchinger then pursued the vehicle and called for assistance.  Several Agencies to include the Iowa State Patrol, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri Valley Police Department responded.

During the pursuit the subject’s vehicle reached rates of speed exceeding 100MPH.  At these high rates of speed Officer Floerchinger observed Jewett leaning out the driver’s side window. At that point Officer Floerchinger heard a loud noise.  One bullet struck Officer Floerchinger’s marked unit.

Jewett retreated back into the car and the pursuit continued south bound to a rest area located at the 80 mile marker.  In the parking lot the teen lost control of his vehicle and struck a parked vehicle.  Jewett ran into a wooded area behind the rest area and was later taken into custody by officers from the Missouri Valley Police Department. A female passenger in the vehicle, 20-year old Sydney Swanson, of Sioux City, was also taken into custody by Motor Vehicle Enforcement officers.  Both subjects were transported to the hospital in Missouri Valley to be checked for injuries and then released to law enforcement.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was requested to conduct the shooting investigation. Jewett was subsequently charged with Attempted Murder, while Swanson was charged with Identity Theft and Interference with official acts.  The investigation is still ongoing and more charges are pending.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Egg prices have surged higher as the death of millions of hens from bird flu is beginning to tighten supplies. The Midwest price of a dozen large eggs rose to $1.88. That’s 58 percent higher than they were a month ago when the bird flu first hit Iowa chicken farms. Prices have been climbing at a rate of about 5 percent a day for the past week as supplies become tighter.

Rick Brown, an egg industry analyst with commodity market firm Urner Barry, says it’s because 10 percent of chickens that lay eggs for food are dead or dying from bird flu. Eggs used principally as an ingredient in ice cream, mayonnaise and other products are up even more, about 162 percent to $1.65 a dozen since April 22.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa agriculture officials say bird flu has been found on another turkey farm in Buena Vista County, two more chicken farms in Sioux County and in a backyard flock of chickens. The four new cases announced Tuesday raise the state’s total to 60 and boosts the number of chickens dead or dying to about 26 million. The latest turkey farm has 24,000 birds raising turkey losses in Iowa to more than 960,000.

One chicken farm has 150,000 egg laying hens and the other 100,000 pullets, younger chickens that were to be egg layers. The backyard flock had 15 chickens. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed more than 39 million birds in 15 states with the H5N2 virus that scientists believe came to the Midwest this spring with migrating waterfowl.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa has fired one student health clinic worker and disciplined another for breaching the privacy of an athlete and his girlfriend by immediately discussing the results of their pregnancy test. The violations come after Iowa fired three and suspended two for accessing the records of football players who were hospitalized in 2011. The university has increased its training on health privacy rules.

According to records The Associated Press obtained under Iowa’s open records law, the latest investigation found a lab worker told a clerk Dec. 31 that a pregnancy test was positive and identified a male athlete in the waiting room. The clerk then spoke with medical assistants who treated the patient to ask whether the athlete was with her and how the couple reacted.

Authorities in Montgomery County say a person who sounded like an adolescent, called-in a bomb threat this (Tuesday) morning, in the Stanton Community School District. According to reports, the call came in just before 8-a.m. from someone claiming they would bring a bomb to the school. Montgomery County Sheriff Joe Sampson and deputies investigated and in the process, screened all K-thru-12th grade students as they entered the school. The students then reported to their homeroom under the supervision of adults.

After a thorough search of building failed to uncover any suspicious devices, the all-clear was given at 9:10-a.m., with classes resuming as normal. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the threat is asked to call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or Stanton school administration.
