GOP settles on slightly more than two percent boost in school funding

News

February 5th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Republican Governor Kim Reynolds and key Republicans in the legislature met yesterday (Monday) and settled on a “per pupil” spending level for the 2019/2020 school year. They’ve agreed to boost general state support of public K-through-12 schools by a little more than two percent, slightly less than what Governor Reynolds recommended last month. Senate Republican Leader Jack Whitver of Ankeny says the deal includes more money to offset transportation costs and address inequities in the state funding formula — for a total package of nearly 90 million more dollars to public schools.

“I think the most important thing when it comes to school funding is we promise an amount that we can actually fund,” Whitver says, “and this amount that we’re promising today is an amount that we’re very confident we’ll be able to fund in the future.”

The state’s education community had been lobbying for more. Melissa Peterson is a lobbyist for the Iowa State Education Association which represents 34-thousand Iowa teachers.  “While we appreciate that 2.06 percent is better than the rates that have been assigned that last couple of years,” she says, “we know that school districts in Iowa need at least three percent to keep up with the cost of inflation.”

Last year, the Republicans at the statehouse approved a one percent hike in per pupil state funding for the current school year. The previous year, the increase was one-point-one percent. Legislative leaders expect the G-O-P’s general school spending level for NEXT year to gain final approval in the House and Senate next week.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 2 Duke is to face No. 3 Virginia in a rematch of one of the season’s most entertaining games. The Blue Devils won the first meeting 72-70 to hand the Cavaliers their first loss. The rematch will be at Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Missouri’s Cuonzo Martin is downplaying his return to Tennessee as a visiting men’s basketball coach for the first time since the end of his own tenure coaching the Volunteers. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have instituted a lifetime ban against a fan accused of flashing a laser at New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady during last month’s AFC championship game. Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:350 a.m. CST

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state of Iowa will pay $4.15 million to two executive branch employees who were sexually harassed for years by an agency director who had been a longtime friend of Gov. Kim Reynolds. The money will go to former Iowa Finance Authority business development director Beth Mahaffey and its current communications director Ashley Jared. The state appeal board voted 2-1 to approve the deals. State Auditor Rob Sand dissented, saying Jamison and not taxpayers should be required to pay

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A bill that would dramatically change the way Iowa selects judges for the Iowa Supreme Court and the district court level has been introduced in the Iowa House. The bill would end appointments by attorneys to judicial nominating commissions and gives the power solely to the governor and legislative leaders.

ANKENY, Iowa (AP) — Police in the Des Moines suburb of Ankeny say a grand jury has declined to indict an officer who killed a Missouri man after he pointed a gun at the officer. Police announced Monday that the Polk County grand jury met last week and decided not to indict officer Todd Webb. Webb responded to a reported robbery on Sept. 15 and located a suspect nearby. Police say the suspect, Christopher Lee Leonard, of Springfield, Missouri, pointed a handgun at the officer, who then shot and killed Leonard.

Wigginton, Shayok lead No. 17 Iowa State past Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Lindell Wigginton scored 17 points to help lead No. 17 Iowa State to a 75-74 victory over Oklahoma on Monday night.

Marial Shayok added 16 points, 10 in the final eight minutes, including a crucial off-balance 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 1:19 remaining, for Iowa State (18-5, 7-3 Big 12). Shayok, who shot just 2-of-7 for six points through the first 32-plus minutes, also had eight rebounds and five assists as the Cyclones won their fourth straight.

Kristian Doolittle had 19 points and nine rebounds, while Brady Manek scored 16 for Oklahoma (15-8, 3-7), which had a very short turnaround after a game at West Virginia on Saturday. The Sooners have lost three in a row.

Iowa State led for most of the second half, going up 64-57 with 5:49 remaining when Wigginton hit two free throws. But Oklahoma battled back, going on a 12-5 run over the next four minutes to tie it 69-69 on Christian James’ layup with 1:51 to go.

The Cyclones pushed the lead to four on Talen Hortton-Tucker’s free throw with 13.5 seconds left, and after Doolittle’s basket pulled OU to within two again with 4.2 to go, Shayok sank two more free throws with 3.5 seconds remaining before Jala Bieniemy hit a meaningless 3-pointer as time expired.

Iowa State: The Cyclones return home to face TCU on Saturday, the first of two meetings against the Horned Frogs in a span of two weeks.

Atlantic avenges early season loss with win over Creston

Sports

February 4th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team used a solid defensive effort to get by the Creston Panthers on Monday night 56-47. It was a tight game throughout and the Trojans trailed by two at the end of the 1st and by one at Halftime 26-25. Atlantic turned the game in their favor in the third, and led 41-32 heading into the fourth.

The Trojans played strong defensively, especially in the second half. Creston’s Kylan Smallwood dropped 38 on the Trojans in their first meeting of the season and he had 16 by halftime on Monday. Atlantic Head Coach Jeff Ebling said he told the team at the break that they were going to have to slow him down or they wouldn’t win the game. Tyler Moen played tight on Smallwood in the second half and he finished with 24 points, including a couple of late buckets. The Trojans not only slowed down the talented Smallwood but made it difficult on the rest of the Panthers as well with some different looks in the second half.

Atlantic got a strong performance on Senior Night from senior Chase Mullenix who finished with 17 points. Logan Reilly and Skyler Handlos both finished with 10 for the Trojans as they improved to 7-10 on the season. The Trojans are back it on Tuesday with a game at the Atlantic Middle School against Clarinda at 7:30pm.

The Panthers only had four players get in the scorebook and fell to 7-10. They will next travel to Clarinda on Thursday.
