SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former Sioux City schoolteacher has been accused of stealing nearly $3,000 from accounts she set up for East High Special Olympics and the Friendship Connection. The Sioux City Journal reports that 48-year-old Melissa Dickerson is charged with theft.

Court documents say Dickerson was an East High School special education teacher in 2013 when she opened the accounts in violation of Sioux City Community School District policies.

Court documents say that, earlier this month, a bank official told district officials that one of the accounts was overdrawn because of a MidAmerican Energy bill in Dickerson’s name. The documents say Dickerson later acknowledged transactions from August 2016 through June that were made for her own personal use.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Powerball ticket sold in Iowa is worth $1 million. Iowa Lottery officials say the ticket matched the first five numbers in Saturday’s drawing, so it earned a $1 million prize even though it fell short of the jackpot. The ticket was sold at a Kum & Go convenience store in Colfax, Iowa.

No one matched all six numbers in Saturday’s drawing, so the jackpot will grow to roughly $440 million for Wednesday.

A call about a vehicle parked on Highway 59 near 310th Street in Fremont County, early this (Monday) morning, resulted in the arrest of 37-year old Matthew Wayne Phillips, of Hamburg. Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports Phillips was taken into custody for OWI/2nd offense. He was brought to the Fremont County Jail and held on a $2,000 bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Bone-chilling cold gripped the middle of the U.S. as 2018 began, breaking low temperature records, icing some New Year’s celebrations and leading to at least two deaths attributed to exposure to the elements.

The National Weather Service issued wind chill advisories for Monday covering a vast area from South Texas all the way to Canada and from Montana and Wyoming in the west through New England in the east.

Dangerously low temperatures enveloped eight Midwest states including parts of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Nebraska along with nearly all of Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.

The weather service said Omaha’s temperature low of 15 below zero (-9 Celsius) before midnight broke a record that had stood since 1884.

Two men from Missouri were arrested in Fremont County late Sunday night. Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports the Fremont County K9 Unit stopped a vehicle on Interstate 29 southbound near mile marker 5. During the stop, 21-year old Elijah Pate and 19-year old Arien Moore, both of Excelsior Springs, MO., were found to be in possession of a controlled substance, prescription medication, and drug paraphernalia.

A juvenile female was also taken into custody, and later released to her parents. Both Pate and Moore were being held in the Fremont County Law Enforcement Center, where Pate’s bond was set at $1,300, and Moore was being held on $1,000 bond.
Fremont County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted during the incident investigation, by the Iowa State Patrol.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A city in eastern Iowa has begun rebuilding the porches of five historic buildings at a center that was once an orphanage for the children of Civil War soldiers. Davenport’s Capital Manager Clay Merritt tells the Quad-City Times that several porches at the Annie Wittenmyer Center have been removed in order to be rebuilt. Merritt says that concrete foundations and wood railings had worn on the porches at the center’s administrative building and four cottages.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A 63-year-old man has died after a weekend house fire in Waterloo, Iowa. The Waterloo fire department said a neighbor reported the fire in the 100 block of Madison Street late Saturday night.

One person was transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and another was arrested, following a rollover accident early Sunday morning. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a passenger in a 2006 Chevy Cobalt, 28-year old Kyle Wayne Pack, of Red Oak, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, which trapped him underneath when it rolled. The driver, 37-year old David Daniel Wells, of Red Oak, who was wearing a seat belt, was not hurt. He managed to free Pack and place him back in the car before running to a nearby home to call for help.

The accident happened at around 4:50-a.m., as the car was traveling east on 210th Street, about one-half mile west of G Avenue, near Red Oak. The car went out of control and rolled into the south ditch, coming to rest upright. Pack was transported by Red Oak Rescue to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Wells was taken into custody for Driving While Suspended, with 15 withdrawals in effect. The accident remains under investigation. Officials say the car the men were in, sustained $4,500 damage.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest at around 12:30-a.m. today (Sunday), of 30-year old Shawn Franklin Riazzi, of Grant. Riazzi was taken into custody at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, for Disorderly Conduct, a simple misdemeanor. He was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $300 cash bond.

And, Red Oak Police report Officers arrested 47-year old Shelby JoAnn Olivares, of Red Oak, for Violation of a No Contact Order, and 48-year old Lynn Kenneth Houtchens, of Red Oak, for Aiding and Abetting the Violation of a No Contact Order. Both subjects were transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center, where they were being held without bond.
