The Union County Sheriff’s Office reports one person was transported to the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, following a single-vehicle accident Tuesday night. 33-year old Jamie Sobotka-Killion, of Creston, complained of pain and possible injury, after she swerved to miss a deer that ran out in front of her. The woman’s car entered the east ditch and came to rest, sustaining only minor damage. The accident  happened on northbound Highway 25 at around 9:40-p.m., Tuesday.

In a delayed report, the Mills County Sheriff’s Office says a Glenwood man was transported to Mercy Hospital by Glenwood Rescue, May 27th, following a collision at the intersection of Highway 34 and Kidd Road. Authorites say Barry Blasi, of Glenwood, was traveling west on Highway 34 in the right hand lane in a 2008 Ford. A 2001 VW driven by Aric Will, of Glenwood, was traveling north on Kidd Road.

Will pulled away from the stop sign and Highway 34 crossover to make a left turn onto Highway 34. He told authorities he didn’t see Blasi’s approaching Ford. The VW proceeded to turn left onto Highway 34 and hit the Ford in the right lane of westbound traffic. Following the collision, the Ford came to rest on its top.

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports three people have been arrested on drug charges. On Sunday, 40-year old Jessica Lynn Brooks, of Logan, was arrested for Possession with the intent to deliver over 5 grams of a controlled substance, Unlawful Possession of prescription drugs and violation of the drug tax stamp.

On June 2nd, 30-year Randal Neal Yochum was arrested for Possession of a controlled Substance. And, on June 1st, 19-year old Collin Earl Robert McDowell, of Malvern, was arrested for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports numerous other arrests took place over the past week. On Tuesday, 18-year old David Patrick Robertson, of Boys Town, NE, was arrested for Assault on a Peace Officer.Robertson was also charged by Glenwood Police, with felony Criminal Mischief, Domestic Abuse Assault, Aggravated Assault, Interference with Official Acts, and Trespassing. His bond was set at $10,000.

; Monday, Mills County Deputies arrested 64-year old Robert Allen Sanders, of Glenwood, for OWI/1st offense and striking an unattended vehicle. Sunday night, 39-year old Timothy Jerald Gustin, of Glenwood, was arrested for Harassment.  Saturday morning, 33-year old Melissa Ann Haley, of Malvern, was arrested for Domestic Abuse Assault. That same day, 45-year old John Martin Roberson, of Henderson, was arrested for Public Intoxication.

On June 3rd, 28-year old April Jean Lightly, of Clarinda, was arrested for Driving Under Suspension. May 31st, 26-year old Marshall Orin Arms, of Hastings, was arrested on a warrant for OWI/1st offense, and Leaving the Scene of an accident. May 30th, Mills County deputies arrested 31-year old Justin Brian Williams, of Tabor, for OWI/2nd offense. On May 28th, 43-year old Salvador Aguilar-Martinez, of Omaha, was arrested for OWI/1st offense. That same day, 49-year old Carl David Galvin, of Glenwood, was arrested for Violation of an Order/contempt of court. 40-year old Dawn Aleene Anderson, of Hastings, was arrested for Driving Under Suspension, and Failure to Maintain or use seat belts. And, 18-year old Matthew Laine Walliser, of Council Bluffs, was arrested May 28th for Driving Under Suspension, Failure to File SR-22,m and Minor in Possession.

The Creston Police Department received two reports of vandalism, recently. On Tuesday, a resident in the 600 block of N. Elm Street reported her shed was vandalized sometime between 8:45- and 10-p.m., Tuesday, and air was let out of her vehicles’ tires. The damage was estimated at $100. And, a resident of Prescott reported a padlock was cut-off of a shed in the 500 block of S. Vine Street in Creston. The incident happened sometime between 3-p.m. Sunday and 3-p.m. Tuesday. A Stihl 18-inch chainsaw and Stihl weed eater were stolen. The loss was estimated at $260.

Creston Police said also, 44-year old Shane Jeromie Hoyle, of Creston, was arrested Tuesday night for Public Intoxication, second-offense. He was later released from the Union County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond.

Police in Red Oak are investigating a hit-and-run accident that took place sometime between 10:30-p.m. Tuesday and 5:45-a.m. today (Wednesday). Authorities say a 2001 Ford Taurus was legally parked in the 1100 block of N. 2nd Street, when an unknown vehicle collided with the left rear corner of the car, causing about $2,000 damage.

There is no information available as to the make and model of the vehicle responsible for the incident. If you may have seen the accident or have information regarding the incident, call the Red Oak Police Department at 712-623-6500.

There won’t be a need for a special, Republican nominating convention in Cass County. With six candidates on the ballot for the Board of Supervisor’s race in District 4, there was a chance none would obtain the required 35-percent of the vote needed in order to avoid a special convention, but that situation was averted, when Steve Baier, of Griswold, came away from Tuesday’s Primary Election with 170 votes, or 39.8-percent. In District 1, Steve Green grabbed 59.1-percent of the vote, ensuring there would be no need for a convention in that three-man Republican race.

In Cass County District 5, incumbent Republican Frank Waters garnered 56-percent of the vote in his three-man race, and incumbent Republican Auditor Dale Sunderman received 54.1-percent of the votes cast, in his win over Wendy Richter.  Green, Baier and Sunderman move on to represent the Republican party in the November General Election. Voter turnout in Cass County was 20.5%, or 1,982 ballots cast out of 9,884 registered voters.

Elsewhere, in Audubon County, incumbent Republican Sheriff Todd Johnson was defeated by his deputy, and fellow Republican, Brian Juelsgaard. Juelsgaard came away with 53-percent of the vote (705) to Johnson’s 47-percent (624 votes). And, incumbent Republican Todd Nelson, along with Rick Thompson, both received the most votes in the three-man race for 2 At Large seats on the Audubon County Board of Supervisors. Thompson received 711 votes (36.4%), while Nelson received 658 votes (33.7%). Doug Sorensen garnered 572 votes (29.3%).  (*This is a correction from earlier reports and posts)

In Guthrie County, Jack E. Lloyd won the three-way Republican race for the Board of Supervisors in District 1, when he received 46.1-percent of the votes cast. In Shelby County, incumbent Republicans Steve Kenkel and Charlie Parkhurst were the winners in the three-way race for the Board of Supervisors. In Montgomery County, incumbent Bryant Amos got the nod for re-election over his Republican opponent, Mike McCunn, with his 16-percent margin of victory in the District 3 race for the Board of Supervisors. Voter turnout in Montgomery County was only 12.39%.

And, in Pottawattamie County, Republicans Marilyn Jo Drake and Tim Wichman moved on to the November General Election, where they will face Democrat Bart Randolph for two seats on the Board of Supervisors. Five candidates had been vying for the chance to move on to November, in Tuesday’s Primary.

There were no contested races in Adair and Adams Counties to report.

Former Iowa Lt. Gov. Patty Judge has won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, overcoming a challenge from three lesser-known candidates and setting up a matchup with longtime Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. Judge won the primary election Tuesday over state Sen. Rob Hogg, attorney Tom Fiegen and former state legislator Bob Krause. She now will face an even harder task as she runs against Grassley, who is seeking his seventh term and has never lost an election since he first ran for the Iowa Legislature in 1958. Judge was a late entry into the race, announcing she was running in March after Grassley’s refusal to hold hearings for President Barack Obama’s pick to fill a Supreme Court vacancy led Democrats to feel more optimistic about their chances of winning.

Former Iowa National Guard soldier Jim Mowrer has won the Democratic nomination in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District and will face Republican David Young. Mowrer won the primary election Tuesday over Desmund Adams and Mike Sherzan in a district that stretches from Des Moines to Council Bluffs. Mowrer, of Des Moines, served in the National Guard in Iraq and later worked in the Pentagon. He received the Democratic nomination in the 4th District in 2014 but lost to Republican Steve King. The three Democrats seeking the nomination agreed on most issues, and the campaign largely focused on who was the best candidate to run against Young, a longtime aide to Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley who is seeking a second term. Republicans hold a registration edge in the district, but the general election is expected to be competitive.

Monica Vernon has won in her second try at the Democratic nomination in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District and a chance to face Republican Rep. Rod Blum. The former Cedar Rapids City Council member won Tuesday’s primary election against former state Rep. Pat Murphy, who beat Vernon in 2014 before losing to Blum.

Republicans in Iowa’s sprawling 4th Congressional District have chosen outspoken conservative Rep. Steve King over a state senator. King won the primary election Tuesday over state Sen. Rick Bertrand, who had argued that voters were tired of the seven-term congressman’s brash statements on topics ranging from immigration to abortion. King gained the endorsements of most Iowa elected Republicans, including U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds. The primary campaign was focused more on candidate styles than policy positions because they agree on most issues, although Bertrand called for more emphasis on Iowa’s agricultural economy. Since being elected to Congress in 2002, King hasn’t faced a close general election. Republicans hold a significant voter registration advantage over Democrats.

Republican David Young has easily won his party’s nomination as he seeks a second term representing Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District. Young won the Republican primary Tuesday over retired educator Joe Grandanette. Young will face the winner of a three-person Democratic contest. Young was a longtime aide to Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley who returned to Iowa in 2014 to run for the U.S. House. He won in a crowded GOP field and then went on to win a convincing general election victory. Republicans hold a registration edge in the district, which stretches from Des Moines to Council Bluffs, but the general election is expected to be competitive.
