This summer, the University of Iowa is partnering with 14 Iowa state parks to host Wildlife Camps for kids across the state. Jay Gorsh, program coordinator, says “Wildlife Camps have been a popular educational and recreational experience in the Iowa City area for more than 25 years and we are excited to share this program with kids across the state. “Campers will spend a week exploring, learning and playing – in the wild.”
The University of Iowa hosted Wildlife Camps in nine state parks last summer. The camps have been so successful, the university is expanding to 14 state parks in 2019. Wildlife Camps are day camps for students entering 3rd-7th grade and offer fun, exploratory activities focusing on the wildlife, natural habitats and unique features of each state park. In southwest/western Iowa, dates and locations of each camp are as follows:

Stone (Sioux City) ｜June 24 — 28
Waubonsie (Hamburg) ｜July 15 — 19
Prairie Rose (Harlan) ｜July 22 — 26

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A former college softball player fatally shot while driving in eastern Iowa will be memorialized today (Friday) at a funeral Mass in her Kansas hometown. Micalla Alexis Rettinger was shot early Sunday morning as she drove over a wooded area along the Cedar River in Waterloo.

The 25-year-old former University of Northern Iowa softball player pulled over along U.S. Highway 218 and died. The bullet also struck one of her passengers: her 32-year-old boyfriend, Adam Kimball. He was hospitalized and the bullet was recovered.
At least $58,000 has been offered as a reward for information leading to an arrest. The Mass is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. today (Friday) at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa, Kansas. She had been living in Waterloo since graduating in 2016 from the university.
A man from Nebraska died late Thursday night during a single-vehicle rollover accident south of Williams, in northern Iowa’s Hamilton County. The Iowa State Patrol reports 41-year old Justin Daniel Meyering, of Lincoln, NE., was eluding law enforcement during a pursuit while driving a 2003 Ford Mustang. The car – which was traveling at a high rate of speed -failed to negotiate a curve and rolled over. Meyering, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. The accident happened at around 11:30-p.m. at 220th Street and Vail Avenue.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed into law a bill that makes it a crime to claim a pet is a service animal if the animal owner doesn’t have a disability and hasn’t demonstrated a need for a service animal. The new law also requires landlords to allow individuals with a disability to have service animals but it also requires the person to provide proof they are disabled and need the animal. Denying a disabled person an animal is a simple misdemeanor but a person intentionally lying that their animal is a service animal when it isn’t also is a misdemeanor.
The bill also alleviates any liability for property owners for injury or damage caused by a service animal. It was supported by the groups representing grocers, restaurants, retailers and landlords. Disability Rights Iowa opposed it fearing store or restaurant employees may call the police on individuals with service animals but no visible disabilities such as those with post-traumatic stress disorder or diabetes.

(Radio Iowa) the reward for information in Sunday’s fatal Waterloo highway shooting of a former University of Northern Iowa softball player continues to grow.
Waterloo police announced Thursday the reward had increased to 58-thousand dollars.
Authorities are trying to figure out where the bullet came from and who fired the shot that struck and killed Micalla Rettinger, as she drove across the Cedar River bridge on U-S Highway 218. Police say investigators have received several tips from the public and each one is being pursued. The FBI is involved in the case.
A funeral mass for the 25-year-old Rettinger is set for this (Friday) afternoon in her hometown of Lenexa, Kansas.
LINDA LEE GRIFFIN, 63, of Atlantic, died Tuesday, April 30th, at Atlantic Specialty Care. Per her wishes she is being cremated, and a memorial service for LINDA GRIFFIN will be held at a later date. Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
An SUV rear-ended a semi tractor-trailer in Pottawattamie County, Thursday evening, resulting in an Audubon County woman being flown to a hospital in Omaha. The Iowa State Patrol reports Interstate 80 eastbound traffic was stop-and-go in a construction zone. A 2018 Volvo semi driven by 64-year old Lyle Hass, of Iowa City, was almost at a complete stop in the right lane near mile marker 41.8, when for reasons unknown, the semi was hit from behind by a 2017 Jeep Cherokee.
The SUV, driven by 48-year old Jolene Hasbrouck, of Audubon, went into the south ditch, following the collision. Hasbrouck was flown by LifeNet helicopter to Bergan-Mercy Hospital in Omaha. Authorities say she was wearing a seat belt.
The accident, which took place at around 6:30-p.m., remains under investigation.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa guard Isaiah Moss has submitted his name to the NCAA transfer portal, joining forward Tyler Cook as starters who intend to leave the program. The Hawkeyes announced that Moss, who played 102 games at Iowa after redshirting one season, intends to transfer. He started all 35 games for Iowa last season. He ranked fifth on the team in scoring with 9.2 points per game, second with 32 steals and fourth with 62 assists.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A judge has sentenced an influential youth basketball coach to an effective lifetime prison sentence for secretly collecting sexual images of 440 boys and fondling more than a dozen over a 20-year period. U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams sentenced former Iowa Barnstormers coach Greg Stephen to 180 years in federal prison. Williams called Stephen’s crimes horrendous, saying he abused his position of trust to prey upon boys who saw Stephen as a gateway to college basketball.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg reached 1,500 strikeouts in fewer innings than any pitcher in major league history, and the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 after a long rain delay to salvage the finale of a four-game series. Despite the strong performance by Strasburg, the Nationals fired pitching coach Derek Lilliquist after the game and replaced him with minor league pitching coordinator Paul Menhart.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer off Wily Peralta with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 for a four-game split. Whit Merrifield became the third player with a two-triple game this season for the Royals, who lead the major leagues with 17 in 32 games. His third-inning triple drove in Martin Maldonado, who beat out an infield hit and is 7 for 13 against Charlie Morton.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The attorney for Tyreek Hill has sent a letter to the NFL disputing claims made by the wide receiver’s fiancee of child abuse. In the four-page letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, attorney N. Trey Pettlon also said Hill was willing to cooperate with the league’s investigation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg reached 1,500 strikeouts in fewer innings pitched than any player in major league history during the Washington’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Strasburg got opposing pitcher Dakota Hudson looking in the fifth inning for his eighth strikeout of the game and the 1,500th of his career. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Strasburg struck out 1,500 in 1,272 1/3 innings. Boston’s Chris Sale had the previous record.
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have optioned shortstop Addison Russell to Triple-A Iowa after he completed his 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred closer Brandon Morrow (elbow) to the 60-day injured list.
