DNR investigating manure discharges due to excessive rainfall

Ag/Outdoor, News

July 6th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa DNR is investigating three manure discharges caused by the recent heavy rainfall in northwestern Iowa.

The DNR responded to Gaylon Rozeboom Feedlot near Rock Rapids, where the effluent basin is overflowing and reaching a nearby unnamed tributary of Mud Creek, which is out of its banks due to the excessive rainfall. The owner has been land applying manure, but the ground is saturated from the rain and the applied manure is running off into the same flooded unnamed tributary in a different location.  Water samples have been collected by the DNR. In the meantime, the owner will turn the pumps on and off more frequently to minimize the discharge.

The DNR responded to Remmerde Farms near Rock Valley, where the effluent basin is overflowing and reached an unnamed tributary of Dry Creek. The owner will pump as often as possible to try to eliminate the discharge.

And, DNR staff observed a discharge at Van Essen Feedlot in Rock Valley. The manure discharge is coming from a leaking pipe near the effluent basin. DNR staff is working with the owner to determine the cause of the discharge and to get it stopped. The manure discharge was entering an unnamed tributary of Dry Creek.

All facilities are covered by NPDES discharge permits; however, the DNR will consider enforcement action if appropriate. No fish kills were reported or observed from these discharges.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — An Iowa man who eluded authorities for almost eight years after his indictment on federal firearms charges has been apprehended in Montana.
Michael Duane Strain of Lime Springs, Iowa made an initial appearance in a Montana courtroom Friday, where a judge ordered him returned to Iowa to face charges.

Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Timothy Hornung says the 62-year-old defendant is a self-proclaimed sovereign citizen, a label used by people who contend they’re not bound by U.S. law.

Hornung says Strain was arrested after a tip that came in by telephone led authorities to him on a remote ranch on the Crow Indian Reservation.

Strain was indicted in northern Iowa in 2011 on two counts of a felon being in possession of firearms. He has previous convictions in Minnesota including for explosives possession and contempt of court.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City woman charged with vehicular homicide in Nebraska has pleaded not guilty to driving drunk in Sioux City the same night as the traffic fatality.

The Sioux City Journal reports that 19-year-old Maria Gonzalez-Diego entered a written plea Friday to second-offense operating while intoxicated and driving while her license was revoked. Gonzalez-Diego remains in the Woodbury County Jail on more than $500,000 bond.

In northeastern Nebraska’s Dakota County, Gonzalez-Diego is charged with vehicular homicide with a prior conviction for DUI and with failure to stop and render aid.

South Sioux City police say Gonzalez-Diego’s northbound vehicle hit 62-year-old Antonia Lopez De Ramirez the night of June 24 as the woman walked east across a street and kept going. Lopez De Ramirez died later at a hospital.

Cardinals hit 3 home runs, power past Giants 9-4

Sports

July 6th, 2019 by admin

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — On a night when he came within a double of hitting for the cycle, Dexter Fowler was more impressed with two defensive plays he made in center field than anything he did at the plate.

It’s easy to see why considering what the rest of the Cardinals lineup did.

Fowler, José Martinez and Paul Goldschmidt homered, Tommy Edman tripled in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning and St. Louis beat the San Francisco Giants 9-4 on Friday night.

“I told the umpire, ‘Hey man, I still got it,'” Fowler said after driving in two runs and scoring three times. “Any time you can make plays to help the guy on the mound, it’s definitely a plus.”

The 33-year-old Fowler has spent most of his time in right field this season, but is likely to see more time in center now that Martinez is a mainstay in the lineup. Fowler’s two running catches in the deepest parts of Oracle Park, including one to take away a hit from Mike Yastrzemski in the fourth, certainly helped as did homering for the second straight day.

“He’s back to being in the strike zone,” manager Mike Shildt said. “He’s seeing the ball well, his swing feels good. Everything looks really good for Dex. Good at-bats, good ballgame.”

Kolton Wong had three hits and two RBIs to help the Cardinals win their third straight and keep pace with Milwaukee in the crowded NL Central. Matt Wieters added two hits and an RBI in a rare start in place of catcher Yadier Molina.

Buster Posey had two hits and Alex Dickerson homered for San Francisco, which had its four-game winning streak stopped. The Giants scored at least seven runs in each of the four previous wins, but were held to one over the final six innings by St. Louis.

Martinez hit a solo home run off starter Drew Pomeranz (2-9) in the first. DeJong followed with a single before Goldschmidt hit his 15th, a two-run blast to deep center that traveled an estimated 449 feet.

San Francisco came back with two runs in the bottom of the first, then tied it on Dickerson’s solo home run leading off the third.

Edman’s triple in the fourth drove in Wong and put St. Louis ahead to stay. It’s the third consecutive game that the Cardinals rookie has driven in the deciding run.

Fowler homered in the ninth after getting a single and triple in his previous two at-bats.

Dakota Hudson (7-4) overcame three first-inning walks to win. The right-hander allowed three runs and struck out six in five innings.

Madison Bumgarner (5-7, 4.02 ERA) starts for the Giants on Saturday. The big lefty needs one strikeout to move past Tim Lincecum into second place on the team’s all-time list in the San Francisco era. The Cardinals counter with RHP Miles Mikolas (5-8, 4.34) . Mikolas won in his only career start against the Giants last season.
