RULO, Neb. (AP) — A highway linking southeast Nebraska with northwest Missouri has been closed.

The Nebraska Transportation Department says U.S. Highway 159 east of Rulo is closed on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River bridge. The Missouri Transportation Department reports that water is rising over the highway on the Missouri side.

The Iowa Transportation Department says a 16-mile (25.8-kilometer) stretch of Interstate 29 remains closed north of Council Bluffs, and Interstate 680 east of Omaha also remains closed by Missouri River flooding.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Officials at a manufacturing plant in Newton say one employee died and another was seriously hurt over the weekend.

Arcosa Wind Towers spokesman Jeff Eller told KCCI-TV the incident Saturday killed one employee and seriously injured another worker, who remained at a hospital Monday.

Names of the workers haven’t been released.

The Newton Daily News says the plant employs more than 180 people at a 335,000-square-foot facility that produces sections of wind towers.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa attorney general’s office has cleared officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man in Burlington.

In a report released Monday, Assistant Attorney General Andrew Prosser concluded the shooting of 20-year-old Caleb Peterson on Sept. 11 was justified.

The shooting happened in the early morning hours after Burlington officers responded to a report of shots fired at a house. Officers pulled over a suspect’s truck, and Peterson got out, pointed a gun at officers and began running.

Three officers and Peterson fired shot during a chase. One bullet hit and killed Peterson.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Colorado man has admitted to throwing a cup of water on Iowa Congressman Steve King.

Court records show 27-year-old Blake Gibbins, of Lafayette, Colorado, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Sioux City, Iowa, to one misdemeanor count of assaulting a member of Congress.

As part of a plea agreement, Gibbins admitted that on March 22, he approached a table at a Fort Dodge restaurant and threw a cup of water at King. The Republican congressman was seated with others.

Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Kelly Mahoney will sentence Gibbins at a later date. He faces a possible maximum sentence of a year in prison, a $100,000 fine and five years of probation.

King has gained national attention for his comments on many topics, especially those related to race and immigration.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A jury Monday convicted an eastern Iowa hog farmer of using a corn rake to kill his wife, agreeing with prosecutors who argued he was enraged that she was having an affair.

Jurors found Todd M. Mullis, 43, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Amy Mullis, according to the Telegraph Herald . She was killed Nov. 10 on the couple’s farm about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Dubuque.

Jurors reached their verdict after deliberating about 7½ hours over two days.

Prosecutors said Mullis had wanted to kill his wife for years and was irate that she was having an affair and fearful that he’d lose their farm if she divorced him.

During the trial, Jerry Frasher testified he was having an affair with Amy Mullis, 39, and that she feared her husband.

“I know she wasn’t happy,” said Frasher, a hog farm field manager. “She said she felt like a slave or a hostage around there. She said she was wanting (to leave Todd). One time, she said if he ever found out (about the affair) she would disappear.”

Mullis’ attorney suggested that Amy Mullis startled someone in the farm’s shed where she was found, prompting that person to impale her in the back with a corn rake while Todd Mullis was working in a nearby barn.

A forensic pathologist who performed an autopsy on Amy Mullis’ body testified she was impaled by a corn rake at least twice and possibly three times.

The first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

The Page County Sheriff’s Office reports two recent arrests.

On Saturday, September 21st Deputies initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Iowa Avenue and Highway 48 in Essex. 29-year-old Nicholas Ivan Maher of rural Essex was arrested for OWI 1st Offense. Maher was booked into the Page County Jail and later released on bond pending future court proceedings.

On Monday Page County Sheriff’s Deputies initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of 140th Street and Q Avenue, about 7 miles north of Clarinda. After investigation 32-year-old Katheryn Layne Woodring of Maryville, MO was arrested for OWI 1st Offense. She was taken to the Page County Jail and held on $1,000 bond pending further court proceedings.
