Chicago suburb names post office in honor of Tuskegee Airman

News

November 10th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — A suburban Chicago post office has been named in honor of an original member of the famed all-black Tuskegee Airmen who flew scores of missions in World War II. Gabrielle Martin told the Daily Southtown on Wednesday during a ceremony for Robert Martin at Olympia Fields Village Hall that her father would have been surprised by “all the fuss.”

“Dad was really kind of a humble man,” Gabrielle Martin said. Robert Martin was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, who introduced legislation in February to name the post office for Martin, called him “an American hero.” Martin’s children then attended the unveiling of a plaque in their father’s honor at the post office. He lived in Olympia Fields from 2008 until his death at age 99 in July 2018.

Martin was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on Feb. 9, 1919. Before the war, Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He was a captain when he was discharged from the Army in 1945. He then worked as an electrical engineer in Chicago until retiring in 1988. Martin was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen — a black aviator group who served in an era when African American military personnel trained and lived in segregated facilities.

President Franklin Roosevelt’s administration made flight instruction available at select black colleges under the Civilian Pilot Training Program, and an air base was created and devoted to training black pilots near the renowned Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, founded by the pioneering black educator Booker T. Washington.

Martin received his wings in 1944 and was commissioned a second lieutenant, then flew with a squadron based in Italy. On his 64th mission, Martin was shot down by enemy gunfire near Zagreb, Yugoslavia, in March 1945. He spent a month behind enemy lines with partisans in a secret Yugoslavian camp before the Allied advance allowed him to return to his base in Italy.

Despite the challenges he faced as a black man in the U.S. and the Army when “Jim Crow was alive and well,” Gabrielle Martin said her father told his family he “had to take a stand” against Nazi atrocities, and “felt it was his duty to serve his country.”

No. 9 Oklahoma escapes with 42-41 victory over Iowa State

Sports

November 10th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell saw an opportunity to seize a win that would boost the Cyclones’ chances of reaching the Big 12 title game, so he put everything on quarterback Brock Purdy. His gamble failed. Parnell Motley intercepted Purdy’s two-point conversion pass with 24 seconds left, and No. 9 Oklahoma held off Iowa State 42-41 on Saturday night. And now, Iowa State’s conference title hopes are bleak.

Campbell went for the victory on the two-point try after Charlie Kolar caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull the Cyclones — down 42-21 in the second half — within one. Campbell said he didn’t regret going for two because Purdy already had passed for 282 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 55 yards and another score.

Jalen Hurts passed for 273 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 68 yards and two more scores for the Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12, No. 9 CFP). CeeDee Lamb had 167 yards and two touchdowns receiving and Kennedy Brooks ran for a season-high 132 yards to help Oklahoma bounce back from a loss to Kansas State two weeks ago. Oklahoma extended its November winning streak to 18 games and set up a showdown at league-leading Baylor next week. Breece Hall rushed for 110 yards for the Cyclones (5-4, 3-3).

All four of the Cyclones’ losses are by seven or fewer points. The Cyclones are a play here and there from a special season. UP NEXT: Iowa State hosts Texas on Saturday.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Jonathan Taylor rushed for a season-high 250 yards and Danny Davis ran for a touchdown and caught another as No. 16 Wisconsin outlasted No. 18 Iowa 24-22 on Saturday. Taylor became the first running back this season to rush for more than 100 yards against Iowa as Wisconsin (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten, No. 13 College Football Playoff) held on to the Heartland Trophy, given each year to the winner of this game. Wisconsin has beaten Iowa four straight times.

Quintez Cephus caught five passes for 94 yards and a score to help Wisconsin stay in contention for the Big Ten West crown. The Hawkeyes entered the day allowing only 10.1 points per game, the lowest average in coach Kirk Ferentz’s 21 seasons at Iowa. But the Hawkeyes allowed a season high in points and were outgained 473-295. Iowa fell to 0-3 this season against ranked teams. The Hawkeyes also lost to Michigan and Penn State earlier in the year.

Iowa could find itself on the outside of the AP Top 25 and CFP rankings next week. Wisconsin positions itself nicely with winnable games against Nebraska and Purdue remaining and a showdown at No. 13 Minnesota (No. 17 CFP) on Nov. 30.
