Earlham wins battle of ranked foes over Atlantic softball

Sports

June 19th, 2020 by admin

The Class 2A #9 Earlham Cardinals got a great performance from Madeline Janssen in the circle and beat the Class 3A #10 Atlantic Trojans on Friday night 6-3 in Atlantic. Janssen struck out 9 batters and only walked one on her way to grabbing the win. She also reached base all three plate appearances of the night with a single, double, and a walk. All three of those reaches turned into runs for Earlham.

The Cardinals jumped on top 1-0 in the third and the Trojans responded an inning later with a 3-run frame in the 4th. Earlham immediately answered the bell though with 3 runs on 2 hits in the 5th inning to grab the lead back at 4-3. Cora Boyle would provide some insurance in the top of the 7th with a 2-out, 2-run double that pushed the score to the final margin. Atlantic got a runner on in the bottom of the 7th, but couldn’t move her over from 1st.

The Cardinals improved to 4-2 on the season with the win. They will next host Pleasantville on Monday night.

Atlantic falls to 4-1 on the year and will take on St. Albert on Monday night at home.
