NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was alert and sent to a hospital after he was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of slugger Giancarlo Stanton during live batting practice Saturday. Tanaka’s hat flew off and he immediately collapsed to the ground, cradling his head at Yankee Stadium. Manager Aaron Boone also says that All-Star infielder DJ LeMahieu and right-hander Luis Cessa tested positive for the coronavirus before traveling to New York and are self-isolating at home.

UNDATED (AP) — Dodgers pitcher David Price won’t play this season because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, delaying his Los Angeles debut until next year. The five-time All-Star became the latest player to opt out, posting Saturday on Twitter that he wouldn’t participate in the 60-game season that’s scheduled to begin July 23. Price’s announcement came a day after Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout said he wasn’t comfortable with the current climate and might not play. Washington first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, Colorado outfielder Ian Desmond and Arizona pitcher Mike Leake are among those who have already said they’re out this year.

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona’s new pitching addition Madison Bumgarner threw two innings of live batting practice. It was his first outing during the team’s summer camp at Chase Field as the D-backs prepare for a 60-game season. The left-handed Bumgarner signed with the Diamondbacks in the offseason after spending his first 11 seasons with the San Francisco Giants. Bumgarner is trying to get his arm in shape and avoid COVID-19 as he prepares for opening day. Three players on the Diamondbacks’ 40-man roster have tested positive for coronavirus though the team hasn’t revealed any names.

BERTHOUD, Colo. (AP) — Will Zalatoris won the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes on Saturday for his first Korn Ferry Tour victory. Zalatoris closed with a 3-under 69 for a one-stroke victory over Chase Johnson. The former Wake Forest star earned $108,000 and jumped from fourth to first in the points race for 25 PGA Tour cards. Zalatoris finished at 15-under 273 for his fourth straight top-10 finish and sixth in nine starts this season. He birdied the par-3 16th and parred the final two holes to help off Johnson. Johnson finished with a 63.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Scott Dixon retook the lead with 18 laps to go and pulled away from Graham Rahal to earn his first IndyCar Grand Prix victory. The five-time series champion beat Rahal to the checkered flag by 19.9469 seconds. It’s the first time in Dixon’s 20-year career he has opened the season with back-to-back victories. Dixon’s 48 career wins are third all-time behind A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has reported another 786 confirmed coronavirus cases to push its total for the pandemic past 31,000. The state Department of Public Health said Saturday that one in every 102 Iowa residents has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, while one in every 11 has tested negative. The total of confirmed positive cases was 31,141 as of Saturday afternoon, and the daily increase was 2.6%. The department reported one additional COVID-19 related death, bringing the total to 721. The agency’s data indicates positive case numbers had been in decline since early May but began a slow climb again around mid-June.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — President Donald Trump’s campaign and allies have blocked efforts to expand mail-in voting, forcing an awkward confrontation with top GOP election officials promoting the opposite in their states. The rare dissonance between Trump and other Republican elected officials also reflects another reality the president will not concede: Many in his party believe expanding mail-in voting could ultimately help him. Trump’s campaign has intervened directly in Ohio, while allies have fired warning shots in Iowa and Georgia. Their moves are aimed at blunting Republican secretaries of state in places that could be competitive in November. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden supports mail-in voting.

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Police say an Iowa man who successfully sued one of his sons for the shooting death of his wife has been assaulted by his other son. The Des Moines Register reports that 55-year-old Billy Dean Carter was arrested Wednesday and charged with assaulting his father, 74-year-old Bill Carter. Police say the younger Carter knocked his father to the ground and kicked him twice on a road near the elder father’s home following an argument. In 2017, a jury ordered another of Bill Carter’s sons, Jason Carter, to pay $10 million to the estate of of his mother, 68-year-old Shirley, who died in 2015 from two gunshot wounds fired by a rifle. Jason Carter was later acquitted of murder in the case.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Nigerian national has appeared in court in Chicago on charges that he orchestrated an international cyber fraud scheme that defrauded U.S. businesses in six states out of tens of millions of dollars. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago said Friday that 29-year-old Olalekan Jacob Ponle, originally of Lagos, Nigeria, was arrested last month in the United Arab Emirates, where he was living. He was expelled from the country and into FBI custody, and arrived in Chicago Thursday. He’s charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud against companies based in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New York and California.

Unhealthy to hazardous air quality has developed over much of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa early this morning, and these conditions will likely linger until around 9 AM. The poor air quality is the result of lingering smoke from Saturday evening fireworks activity which has become trapped near the ground by a
temperature inversion and stagnant air flow pattern. Conditions are expected to improve after 9 AM as increased atmospheric mixing allows for the dispersion of the smoke.

Those with respiratory concerns should avoid outdoor exposure until conditions improve later this morning.

Atlantic gets past Underwood in close softball battle

Sports

July 4th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans softball team was able to pull out a win over the Underwood Eagles 2-1 on Friday night in Atlantic. All three runs scored in the game came on free bases given by the pitcher.

Defense dominated much of the early portion of the game with Atlantic notching 4 hits and Underwood with 2 hits through the first four innings. Atlantic got their two runs in the 5th with a two-out rally. Madi Botos got it started with a single, followed by an Olivia Engler single and a walk for Lauren Nicholas. Underwood pitcher Sierra Fox then walked Kennedy Goergen to bring home Botos. Maleana Woodward was then hit by a pitch and that brought home Ava Rush who was base-running for Engler.

Underwood would fight back in the 7th inning with Allie Robertson’s third lead-off single of the game. That was followed by a walk for Grace Pierce and Erin McMains reaching on a fielder’s choice that got Robertson out at third. A single by Taylor Nelson loaded the bases. Olivia Engler came up with a big strikeout of Macy Vanfossan then walked in a run against Maddie Pierce. Clinging to that one-run lead Engler got Peyton Cook to ground out to first and Kennedy Goergen made the play to end the game.

Atlantic finished off a big 5-0 week and are now 13-1 on the season. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann said it was another great test for his team.

Madi Botos said she is so grateful to get to play with this group.

The Eagles fell to 9-3 with the loss.
