Bagged “Garden Salad” from Hy-Vee, ALDI & Jewel-Osco Stores may be contaminated

News

June 20th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners today (Saturday), said they are “investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections potentially linked to ALDI, Hy-Vee, and Jewel-Osco grocery store brand “garden salads” containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrots. This applies only to the store brand salads labeled as “garden salads” and not for other types of store brand packaged salads sold at these retailers.”

FDA and CDC are recommending that consumers should not eat, and restaurants and retailers should not sell or serve all ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad sold in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri, all Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad sold in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska, and Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Brand Garden Salad sold in Illinois.

Case Counts – Total Illnesses: 76
Hospitalizations: 16
Deaths: 0
Illness Onset Date Range: 5/11/2020 – 6/14/2020
States with Cases: IA (28), IL (23), KS (1), MN (10), MO (7), NE (7)

Although the investigation is ongoing, CDC’s analysis of epidemiologic information indicates that these bagged salads from ALDI, Hy-Vee and Jewel-Osco grocery stores are a likely cause of the illnesses. FDA has initiated a traceback investigation to determine supplier and distributor information to find the cause and source of the outbreak.

FDA is in the beginning stages of this investigation and there may be additional retailers and products impacted by this outbreak. As this outbreak investigation continues, the FDA will provide additional updates to this advisory as more information becomes available. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Lawyers say most charges have been dropped against an Iowa City man who led protests against police brutality and racial injustice. The lawyers for Mazin Mohamedali say Friday they have reached an agreement with Johnson County prosecutors to dismiss five of six pending charges against the man. He was arrested June 7 on charges of unlawful assembly and disorderly conduct after taking part in a protest near Interstate 80 that ended when officers used tear gas and flash grenades to disperse a crowd. Mohamedali was then ordered jailed on a parole violation, as a probation officer cited comments he had made about upcoming protests. He’d been convicted in 2018 on charges connected to a gas station robbery.
