Iowa/Midwest early News Headlines: Wed., Oct. 10 2018

News

October 10th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:35 a.m. CDT

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — Decades after they died, the military is seeing a surge in identifications of U.S. service members who had been classified as missing in action. The number of identifications will likely reach 200 this year, more than triple what once was the norm. The increase by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency is credited to increased funding and new techniques for tracking remains and identifying them. The soaring number of identifications followed years of complaints that the process was ineffective.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney Michael Avenatti’s brash confidence is being closely watched by Democrats in Washington and key political battleground states with a mix of intrigue and trepidation. Trump’s victory over more experienced politicians in the 2016 campaign has reshaped traditional views of who would make a viable presidential candidate. Yet some party leaders are worried about trying to replicate Trump’s approach by backing another untested and unpredictable candidate.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein says President Donald Trump’s attack on her handling of an allegation against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is “ridiculous and an embarrassment.” The ranking member of the Judiciary Committee again denied she breached the confidence of Christine Blasey Ford, who said Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her decades ago. Feinstein responded to Trump’s claim Tuesday at an Iowa rally by saying, “Even the reporter who broke the story said it wasn’t me or my staff.”

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — For years the target of the chant “Lock her up!” at Trump rallies has been Hillary Clinton. Now it’s the senior senator from California, Democrat Dianne Feinstein. In Iowa for a rally Tuesday night, the chant came as President Donald Trump repeated his unsupported assertion that Feinstein leaked a letter written by the woman who accuses Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were teenagers. Feinstein denies that she leaked the letter.

Iowa social worker out after false testimony about parents

News

October 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A social worker has left the Iowa Department of Human Services months after a judge found she repeatedly gave false testimony against a mother and father who were unfairly stripped of their parental rights. Department spokesman Matt Highland says Chelsie Gray left the agency Sept. 23, two weeks after The Associated Press inquired about her status.

Highland said that Gray wasn’t fired or forced to resign, and the agency cannot disclose any information about her departure under Iowa law. The agency refused to release the findings from a review conducted of Gray’s cases after her false testimony came to light last spring.

A judge ruled in June that Gray delivered fabricated reports and trial testimony that helped convince a court to terminate the legal rights of a mother and father of four children in northern Iowa.

Indictment: Man wed US citizen so he could remain in country

News

October 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a Waterloo brother and sister set up a sham marriage so he wouldn’t have to leave the United States. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Selmir Salkanovic and his sister, Salena Dedic, were arrested Thursday and pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit marriage fraud. Salkanovic also pleaded not guilty to marriage fraud.

Court records say Salkanovic is a Bosnian who overstayed his tourist visa. He’d promised to leave the country in June last year but instead, with his sister’s help, married a U.S. citizen after making a $5,000 deal with her. Federal law lets immigrants who marry U.S. citizens to receive conditional residency status, which can be upgraded to permanent residency after two years and then citizenship five years after that.

The records say Salkanovic and the woman never consummated the marriage and never lived together. It’s unclear whether the woman’s been charged.

Clarification: I80/29 westbound in Council Bluffs to be closed Wed./Thu. Night

News

October 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Transportation has clarified an earlier press release pertaining to the temporary closing of Interstate 80 at Exit 51. Scott Suhr, DOT District 4 Planning Coordinator, told KJAN News the earlier announcement should have specified Exit 51 is in Council Bluffs along I-80/29, not the Marne Exit, as we had earlier reported.
The westbound interstate will be closed overnight Wednesday and Thursday at Exit 51 in Council Bluffs from 10-p.m. Until 6-a.m. Each day, so that crews may change overhead signs along the interstate.
Again, this does NOT affect I-80 westbound at the Marne interchange.
