Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department Director Bryant Rasmussen reports, beginning Wednesday (12/23) at 10:00 am, the Sunnyside Park Roads will be closed for the winter. The main road to the Park House will remain open as well as the rest of the park. The Parks Dept. thanks you for your cooperation, and hope you get out and enjoy the parks over the winter months.

Atlantic basketball games against Shenandoah postponed Tuesday

The Atlantic Trojans basketball teams were set to host the Shenandoah Phillies and Mustangs for a varsity basketball doubleheader on Tuesday night but those games have been postponed. No makeup date for those contests has been set yet.

ISU men’s hoops game against Chicago State canceled

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State-Chicago State men’s basketball game scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 22 has been canceled due to an insufficient number of players available in the CSU program.

“Obviously this is disappointing for our student-athletes to have another game canceled, but we understand the situation Chicago State is in,” Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm said. “We look forward to returning to Hilton Coliseum to face Baylor on Jan. 2.”

Iowa Athletics pauses all in-person activities

The Iowa Athletics program is putting all in-person activities on hold. The football program has had an increase of positive COVID-19 cases recently. The Hawkeyes are still hopeful to particitpate in the Music City Bowl on the 30th.

Gary Barta Comment:

 “As I shared this morning, last week we experienced an increase in positives cases within our football program. Our student-athletes returned to testing today and based on additional positive tests and contact tracing, our medical team has made the decision to pause in-person activities for a minimum of five days. We will continue to follow Big Ten Conference medical protocol and participate in daily rapid antigen testing. Based on the information we have available today, we feel confident in our ability to participate in the TransPerfect Music City bowl.”

Kirk Ferentz Comment:

“Late this afternoon I met with our Player Leadership Group and they overwhelmingly want to play in the bowl game. We will continue to prepare and put our game plan together for the TransPerfect Music City Bowl using the technology we have available. While our first priority is the health and safety of our players and staff, our goal is to play and compete on Dec. 30.”

Northern Iowa to build artificial turf field with $2M gift

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — The University of Northern Iowa has received a $2 million donation to build an artificial turf football field. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier on Monday reported the donation from Doug and Ann Goschke. Construction on the outdoor practice facility is set to start in the spring. Head Football Coach Mark Farley says the new facility will allow the team to practice safely in all weather conditions late into fall and in early spring. The couple gave the money to honor Doug’s late sister, Junean Goschke. She graduated from what’s now known as the University of Northern Iowa in 1966.

1 arrest, 2 Theft reports in Creston

The Creston Police Department Tuesday (today), said 39-year old Abraham Schweers, of Lenox, was arrested at around 2:24-a.m. Monday, on a Union County Warrant for Theft 5th Degree. He was released from the Union County Jail on a $300 bond. There were two incidents of theft reported recently, to Creston Police.

Authorities say a woman residing in the 400 block of New York Avenue said Monday, that at around 1:15 AM Monday, someone came onto her property and took a radiator that was sitting outside next to the garage. The loss was estimated at $300. And, Sunday morning, a man residing in the 800 block of N. Lincoln, in Creston, told Police that sometime in the past 24 hours, someone had broke into his vehicle while it was parked in the lot at his apartment building. The man advised that a Seiko Watch and a handicap placard were taken from the vehicle. Those items were valued at $75.
