KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – After a season of turmoil, one marred by injuries to some of their best players and the firing of the head coach, the Kansas City Chiefs are ready for a reset. The Chiefs began their offseason program Monday, and next week’s draft gives general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel another opportunity to fill holes that have developed since last season’s 8-8 campaign. Pioli has already been busy this offseason, bolstering the offense by signing tackle Eric Winston, running back Peyton Hillis and tight end Kevin Boss. Kansas City will also get a bunch of players back from injuries, including quarterback Matt Cassel, Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry and All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles. ST. LOUIS (AP) — The rally squirrel has moved on from T-shirts and stuffed animals. The World Series championship rings the St. Louis Cardinals received over the weekend pay homage to the critter that served as a good luck charm last fall. A tiny squirrel appears below the Cardinals logo and just above the player’s number inside a home plate with bats crossed. The Cardinals won two straight to upset the Phillies in the division series after a squirrel scampered across home plate as Skip Schumaker batted against Roy Oswalt.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jake Westbrook allowed one earned run in seven strong innings and rookie Matt Carpenter homered, tripled and drove in five runs in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 10-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Cubs starter Paul Maholm (0-2) surrendered six runs in four innings. The left-hander is 0-7 with a 7.03 ERA in nine starts since his last win on July 10, 2011 against the Cubs when he was with Pittsburgh. Carpenter has been getting regular duty while Lance Berkman recovers from a strained left calf and is batting .409 with 10 RBIs in 22 at-bats. He singled his first two trips with an RBI, belted a two-run shot to straightaway center off Lendy Castillo in the fifth for his first career homer and added a two-run triple off Rodrigo Lopez in the seventh.

Individual honors (medals):
Audubon players claimed five of the top eight individual scores (46 in the entire field.) Andrew Irlmeier (78) was second, Michael Bylund (80) was fourth, Nick Fett (82) was sixth, and Drew Keller (83) and Andy Hoffmann (83) tied for seventh. Cameron Mennenoh shot 89.
Audubon Coach Gary Keller’s comments: Players teed off into heavy fog about 8:30 a.m. and putted on dewy greens, but there was very little wind and temps were pleasant. The tournament ended at 2:00 p.m. just ahead of the thunderstorms. Audubon’s guys played very steady, consistent golf, with only 2 individual hole scores (out of 108) higher than a 6. The 4-man total of the 2nd 9 was our lowest of the year: 155. Michael (41-39), Andrew (38-40), and Nick (41-41) played the front and back nines pretty evenly, while Drew (44-39) and Andy (46-37) made big comebacks. Andrew had an eagle on #5, the long par-5 hole than runs along the edge of the State Park. Panorama had never lost in all the years that tournament has been held. Mostly the same Audubon players placed 2nd at this tournament two years ago.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched effectively into the sixth inning and Yadier Molina had two hits and two RBIs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The Cardinals snapped a two-game skid with their fourth win in six games. Chicago, which lost five of its first six, had won two in a row. Lynn (2-0) gave up four hits and one run in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out five, walked two and lowered his ERA to 1.50. Lynn, the 39th overall pick in the 2008 draft, allowed one run over 6 2-3 innings in his first start, a 9-3 win at Milwaukee on Sunday. He began the season with a 1-1 career mark. Jon Jay hit his second home run of the season in the seventh off Shawn Camp.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has long been known for its punishing running attack. But the Hawkeyes will wrap up spring ball next week with serious questions to answer about their running back situation. Iowa is down to a pair of unproven sophomores, Damon Bullock and De’Andre Johnson, after Marcus Coker’s departure and Jordan Canzeri’s knee injury. True freshmen Greg Garmon and Barkley Hill join the team in August. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Bullock and Johnson have made consistent improvement this spring. He also says they’ve told Garmon and Hill to do everything they can to be ready to play by the end of the summer.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Nothing has changed in the competition for the starting quarterback job at Iowa State after the Cyclones’ spring game. Jared Barnett and Steele Jantz were even throughout spring practice after both started games last season, and both had good moments in Saturday game, though coach Paul Rhoads was disappointed in their interceptions. Barnett, who started six games in 2011, completed 11 of 21 passes for 67 yards and added 54 yards rushing. He was intercepted twice. Jantz, who started the other seven games last fall, was 20 of 32 for 161 yards, including a nicely thrown ball on a 56-yard completion to Josh Lentz. He threw one interception. Rhoads says he doesn’t have a timetable for naming a starter in the fall.
