Hawkeyes to Wear Throwbacks Against Iowa State

Sports

April 21st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa plans to wear throwback uniforms from the 1920s during next season’s home opener against Iowa State.  The Hawkeyes will wear uniforms resembling those of their 1921-22 teams, which both went 7-0.  Iowa will wear gold helmets with gray facemasks and gold pants.  The jerseys will be black with white numbers and no names, and the Hawkeyes will also wear black socks and shoes.  The Kinnick Stadium opener on Sept. 8 will mark just the third time Iowa has worn throwback uniforms.

Lynn Leads Cardinals to 4-1 Win Over Pirates

Sports

April 21st, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Lance Lynn allowed only an inside-the-park homer to Alex Presley in seven innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Presley led off the bottom of the first with a drive off the top of the center field fence. It was just the Pirates’ second inside-the-parker at PNC Park since it opened in 2001. Filling in nicely for injured ace Chris Carpenter, Lynn (3-0) gave up four hits. He walked one and struck out four. He has won each of his starts this season and compiled a 1.42 ERA while Carpenter has been on the disabled list with a nerve problem in his pitching shoulder. Lynn pitched primarily in relief last season as a rookie when St. Louis won the World Series. Lynn also scored the go-ahead run on Carlos Beltran’s two-out single in the fifth inning off Charlie Morton (0-1).

Rulon Gardner Ends Comeback Bid

Sports

April 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Forty-year-old heavyweight Rulon Gardner has ended his comeback bid a day before the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Gardner didn’t show up to weigh in on Friday, ending his quest. USA Wrestling did not disclose details or a reason. Gardner won the gold medal in Sydney in 2000 and bronze in Athens eight years ago. He added nearly 200 pounds after retiring from wrestling. But a stint on the NBC reality show “‘The Biggest Loser” convinced him to give wrestling one final shot. Gardner told the AP two weeks ago that he was roughly 25 pounds heavier than the 264.5 pound-limit for his weight class. Gardner acknowledged then that it might be difficult to make weight by Friday.

Coach Shawn Petersen’s Comments:

Cold dreary day in Clarinda, and the results for our girls matched the weather, unfortunately; I thought we had a chance in a couple of matches to get wins or at least be a little more competitive, but Clarinda played well and we didn’t get the job done in any of the matches; I thought Leah at #2 played her best match of the year — she got down to the big-hitting lefty Rogers 7-1, but rallied back to 7-4 and played much better — when she is letting it fly and not playing tight she can bang with most big hitters.  Lisa at #5 played very well — battled the senior tough — I really like Lisa’s competitiveness and heart, and she continues to get better.  I expect she will break through very soon.  Libby played pretty well in her first varsity start — took her awhile to calm down her nerves, but she served well and moved well and competed.

In doubles, I mixed up the lineup at the top a little bit, and I liked what I saw at times — we need to get much better at court coverage and net position, and that’s a work in progress — we are becoming more consistent with serve and serve return, but need to get better there, too.

In JV, Bre Wright scored two victories, and Kallee Mudd and Kaley Miller both picked up singles wins as well.
