No. 22 Northwestern women hold off Iowa 77-67

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Jordan Hamilton scored 19 points, Veronica Burton had 18 points and seven assists, and No. 22 Northwestern beat Iowa 77-67. Sydney Wood added 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Wildcats. The Hawkeyes closed within 66-60 with 7:01 left in the game. From there, Wood scored seven of Northwestern’s final 11 points to help the Wildcats close it out.

Monika Czinano scored a career-high 28 points on 13-of-14 shooting and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds for Iowa. Megan Meyer added 11 points and McKenna Warnock grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds.

 

2 Iowa prison inmates have died

The Iowa Department of Corrections reports the death of two inmates. Jessie Joseph Gonzales, age 67,was pronounced dead Thursday evening. He died from complications related to COVID-19 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Originally incarcerated at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility, Gonzales had been serving a 25-year sentence for the crime of Distribution of Schedule 1 or 2 Controlled Substance to a Person Under 18, from Polk County. His sentence began on February 25, 2020.

The DOC says 70-year old William James Gibson was pronounced dead early Friday morning, due to natural causes (not COVID-related). He died at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center. Gibson had been serving a 30-year sentence for multiple convictions of Habitual Offender, from Buchanan County. His sentence began on December 20, 2019.

Edwards, McClung lead No. 18 Texas Tech over Iowa St 91-64

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kyler Edwards scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half as No. 18 Texas Tech built a huge lead and breezed past Iowa State 91-64. The Red Raiders used a pair of 12-0 runs to make it 54-28 with just over a minute left before the break.

Mac McClung added 18 points for Texas Tech, which is 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12. Solomon Young and Rasir Bolton led the Cyclones with 15 points each. Iowa State is 2-7 and 0-5 in the conference.

A private, family, Mass of Christian Burial for AGNES POTTEBAUM will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anita, with an open visitation on Monday, Jan. 11th, from 4-until 7-p.m., at the Hockenberry Funeral Home, in Anita. Masks and social distancing will be required.

Her husband – Ray Pottebaum.

(Updated) DES MOINES, Iowa. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a Des Moines man who allegedly took part in the riot at the U.S. Capitol building by supporters of President Donald Trump. Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said Saturday that officers assisted the FBI in arresting 41-year-old Doug Jensen on Friday night at his home in the city’s south side. He is being held at the Polk County Jail.

Jensen was charged by the FBI with:

1) Knowingly Entering or Remaining in any Restricted Building or Grounds Without Lawful Authority
2) Disrupting the Orderly Conduct of Government Business
3) Violent Entry and Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building
4) Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building
5) Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer During a Civil Disorder

Video posted online during the mayhem Wednesday showed a man who appears to be Jensen, pursuing an officer up a flight of stairs as a mob trails behind.
