IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is fielding one of the youngest teams of coach Kirk Ferentz’s 14-year tenure. Youth is hardly the reason the Hawkeyes are off to such a dismal start. In a three-point loss to Iowa State, the Hawkeyes (1-1) didn’t record a sack or a touchdown, scoring just six points despite forcing four turnovers. Iowa held Iowa State scoreless after halftime, its offense couldn’t take advantage. On Saturday, the Hawkeyes host FCS school Northern Iowa — which nearly knocked another struggling Big Ten team, Wisconsin, on Sept. 1. Ferentz says the Hawkeyes need to start finishing plays and drives.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ only scheduled game without Tamba Hali certainly didn’t go well. Their leading pass rusher was suspended for the season opener, a 40-24 loss to Atlanta on Sunday, for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He was joined on the sidelines by cornerback Brandon Flowers, defensive tackle Anthony Toribio and safety Kendrick Lewis, all due to injuries. Hali was back at the Chiefs’ practice facility Monday, but it’s unclear whether any of the other ailing players will be ready for next Sunday’s game at Buffalo. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said Flowers is the most likely to participate when practice resumes Wednesday. The other two starters could miss yet another week.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cameron Maybin hit a two-run homer, Will Venable had three RBIs and the San Diego Padres handed the struggling St. Louis Cardinals an 11-3 loss on Monday night. The loss dropped the Cardinals 9 1-2 games behind first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. St. Louis, which has lost four of five, had its lead cut to one game over the idle Los Angeles Dodgers for the second NL wild-card berth. Maybin connected for his seventh homer off Jaime Garcia (4-7) that broke a 2-all tie in the fourth inning. Maybin had three hits and scored three runs. Chris Denorfia tied his career high with four hits and also had two RBIs. Logan Forsythe added three hits to tie his career high as San Diego matched its season best for runs and had 17 hits.
Lance Berkman is scheduled for season-ending surgery on his troublesome right knee Tuesday, leaving the St. Louis Cardinals without a dangerous bat as they try to secure a playoff spot. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny announced the news Monday before his team played the San Diego Padres. The defending World Series champions began the night with a 1½-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the second NL wild-card spot. Berkman, who had surgery on the same knee in May, traveled to Houston on Monday to meet with the medical team that performed the first operation. The same group of doctors will perform the surgery Tuesday (Today).
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s secondary is quickly easing any concerns that came from having two new starters. First-year starters Jansen Watson and Durrell Givens have combined with returning regulars Jeremy Reeves and Jacques Washington to form an aggressive unit that’s been a strength for the Cyclones (2-0). Iowa State has four interceptions in the first two games, and neither Tulsa nor Iowa completed 50 percent of its passes. Iowa State came up with late interceptions to secure both victories. The play of the secondary has been critical in a defense that’s giving up just 15 points a game and held Iowa without a touchdown in a 9-6 victory last Saturday. Iowa State hosts Western Illinois on Saturday.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State senior linebacker Jake Knott has been named the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Knott had six tackles in Saturday’s 9-6 win at rival Iowa. Knott also made the game’s biggest play when he intercepted Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg with 1:11 left to seal Iowa State’s second straight win over the Hawkeyes. Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was tabbed the league’s offensive player of the week by a panel of media members who cover the conference. Deante’ Gray of TCU was the Big 12’s top performer on special teams.
