Maryland blanks Iowa in B1G Championship

Sports

May 28th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Iowa came up short in the Big Ten Championship game in Omaha.

That’s John Leo and John Evans with the call on the Hawkeye Network. Maryland used two fifth inning homers to take command in a 4-0 victory. The Hawks were limited to five hits and hit into three double plays.

Iowa associate head coach Marty Sutherland says the Hawkeyes squandered too many scoring chances early.

The Hawkeyes were blanked after scoring 29 runs in three first three tournament games.

The Hawkeyes are 42-14 and find out tomorrow where they are headed for the NCAA Tournament.

Iowa blows out Michigan to advance to the Championship game today (Sunday)

Sports

May 28th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Omaha, Nebraska) – The Iowa Hawkeyes baseball team clobbered Michigan Saturday morning, in Omaha, and advanced to the Big 10 Championship game this (Sunday) afternoon. Ty Langenberg, from Urbandale, tossed seven brilliant innings with zeroes on the scoreboard while waiting for his offense to heat up, then watched as the Iowa bats chipped in with the necessary insurance to remove all tension.

That productive blend propelled the Hawkeyes to a 5-0 win and a spot in Sunday’s championship game, where Iowa (42-13) will face regular-season champion Maryland at 2 p.m.

The Terps are headed back to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game for the first time since 2015 after beating fourth-seeded Nebraska, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. They  reached their second-ever B1G Tournament final, winning 40 games in a season for the fourth time in program history and the second year in a row

Iowa mulls pitching options at B1G baseball tournament

Sports

May 26th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller was mulling over his pitching options as the Hawkeyes get ready for Saturday morning’s semifinal round of the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha. Iowa plays Indiana of Michigan beginning at 9-a.m.,  and with a victory would advance to Sunday’s title game. A loss this morning would force a second semifinal game Saturday night.

Marcus Morgan started Tuesday’s win over Michigan and Brody Brecht started Thursday’s win over Indiana. Third starter Ty Langenberg is ready to go.

Heller says they are discussing options.

Heller says one option would be to save Langenberg for the fourth game and use the bullpen Saturday morning.
