Injury accident in Cass County Saturday evening

Rescue crews and law enforcement responded Saturday evening, to a single-vehicle, injury accident that took place on Interstate 80 in Cass County. Atlantic Fire and Rescue and Cass EMS responded at around 5:52 p.m. to a report of a vehicle in the median near mile-marker 56. Four occupants of the vehicle were outside at the time the call went out. The driver was still inside. One person complained of abdominal pain; another occupant reportedly had glass in her arm.

Additional details were not available as of early Sunday morning.

Cass County (retired) K9 “Vader” has passed away

A retired K9 from Cass County has passed away after many years of service. K9 “Vader” began his career in 2013 with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Vader was imported as a puppy from a breeder in Vancouver Canada, by Deputy Kyle Quist and his wife Anne. He was raised in trained in Atlantic at I80 K9.

Saturday night, Deputy Quist posted on the I80 K9 Facebook page, “It has been a rough few days here so has taken a bit to post. We said good bye to a warrior, a friend, a family member. Such a great dog from our friends at Canczechdogs. Thank you to Dr. Kate at Atlantic Animal Health Clinic for taking such good care of him. Under the stars and stripes- the country and citizens he worked for and protected. Highly awarded with so many achievements unnoticed. We love you Vader.”

It was announced last week also, that the Harlan Police Department’s K9 “Jax” had passed away from natural causes, after serving the department for nine-years.

Saturday’s High in Atlantic was 66. Our Low was 38. Last year on this date, the High in Atlantic was 64 and the Low was 52. The Record High was 105 in 1934. The Record Low was 33, in 1930.

PENNY JEAN JACOBSEN, 60, of Kimballton, died Friday, May 28th, at Myrtue Medical Center, in Harlan. Funeral services for PENNY JACOBSEN will be held 11-a.m. Wed., June 2nd, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 1st, from 5-until 8-p.m.

Burial is in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Kimballton.

PENNY JEAN JACOBSEN is survived by:

Her husband – Neal Jacobsen, of Kimballton.

Her daughters – Marye (Zach) Krajicek, of Kimballton, and Alison (Brent) Chambers, of Hamlin.

Her sisters – Cindy (John) Schechinger, of Harlan, and Michelle (Kelly) Jacobsen, of Elk Horn.

Iowa COVID-19 update for Saturday, May 29, 2021: 6 additional deaths; 103 new cases; 7 day avg. hits 2%

The Iowa Department of Public Health, as of 10-a.m. today (Saturday), said there were 103 new COVID-19 positive tests reported over the previous 24-hours, and six additional deaths. The health department reported 401,693 total positive tests, and 6,053 total deaths since the start of the pandemic, including 2,364 at Long-Term Care facilities. Iowa’s 14-day positivity rate is 2.5%. The 7-day average is down to 2.0%.

The number of Iowans hospitalized with COVID-19 remains at its lowest level in more than a year. IDPH reports there are 111 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. That’s the lowest number reported since early April of 2020. Iowa reports 24 patients in ICU, also the lowest number reported since early April. Officials report 22 patients with COVID or its symptoms  were admitted to a hospital, and 10 patients are on ventilators. In RMCC Region 4 (hospitals in western & southwest Iowa), there are: five patients hospitalized with COVID or symptoms of the virus; one person with COVID was in an ICU; There were no new admissions or persons on a ventilator to report in Region 4.

There remain three long-term care facilities that are reporting active COVID-19 outbreaks, with a total of 22 positive cases among patients/staff at the those facilities, and seven persons who have recovered from the virus. Health department data shows over 1.34-milion people have completed a vaccine series in Iowa. There have been 2.75-million total doses administered. A reminder: The five state-operated Test Iowa drive-thru sites and the State Hygienic Lab will be closed on Monday, May 31, for the Memorial Day holiday.

Sturm brothers end doubles tennis season at State; other State Tourney results

The Atlantic boys tennis doubles team of Grant and Ethan Sturm ended their solid season at the 1A State Tournament on Friday at Coe College.

They dropped their opening match to Luke Hicks/Carter Soppe of Kuemper Catholic 6-3, 6-3. That dropped them into the consolation bracket where they were then knocked out by AJ Wilkins/Calvin Jaworski of Grinnell 6-4, 6-2.

Hicks and Soppe of Kuemper Catholic would fall in their second round match to Anderson/Branum of Decorah 6-2, 6-2. They then fell in second round consolation play to McPartland/Zehr of Boone 6-2, 7-6.

Denison-Schleswig’s duo of Harrison Dahm and Colin Reis advanced on to the second day of play Saturday. They won their opener over Reed Finnegan/Josh Schuster of Shenandoah  6-0, 6-0. Then fell in the second round to Fair/Freiburger of Dubuque Wahlert 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. In second round consolation play they beat Blackford/Shindelar of Marion 6-4, 6-0 to reach the consolation semifinal. They will face Wilkins/Jaworski from Ginnell in that match.

Finnegan/Schuster of Shenandoah were knocked out in consolation first round play with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Coe/Courter of Cedar Rapids Xavier.

In Class 1A Singles play Jeff Miller of St. Albert advanced to the Semifinals with two nice wins. He beat Caleb Briggs of Pella 6-2, 6-2 and then downed Roan Matineau of Dubuque Wahlert 6-4, 6-1. He will face Cameron Luhring of Aplington-Parkersburg in the Semifinals Saturday.

Shenandoah’s Andrew Lawrence won his first round match over Sam Timp of Wahlert 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Then he fell in the second round to Ben Craven of Boone 6-0, 6-1. In consolation play he fell to Trenton Link of Cedar Rapids Xavier 6-0, 6-0.

Clarinda’s Nathan Brown fell in two matches. He lost the opener to Roan Martineau of Wahlert 6-0, 6-4. Then fell in consolation play to Caleb Briggs of Pella 6-4, 6-2.

In Class 2A Singles play Dalton Pregon of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln lost his first match to Daniel Lu of Dowling Catholic 6-1, 6-0. He then won a first round consolation match over Steven Danna of Waukee 7-5, 6-2. He then got knocked out in second round consolation play by Eli Young of Iowa City West 6-2, 6-0.
