OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The death of Hall of Fame baseball player Tony Gwynn might give some pause to college players who use chewing tobacco. Whether it makes them stop is another matter. Virginia pitcher Josh Sborz says he chews tobacco once a month or every two weeks, and he said Gwynn’s death should make players think.
According to an NCAA survey on substance use, baseball players acknowledging they used spit tobacco at least once in the previous month rose from 42.5 percent in 2005 to 52.3 percent in 2009. Results of the 2013 survey have not been released. The NCAA banned tobacco in 1994, a year after minor-league baseball did the same. Tobacco is not banned in the major leagues.
College players and coaches caught with tobacco during games are to be ejected.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A.J. Burnett scattered seven hits for his first complete game of the year and the Philadelphia Phillies won their season-high fifth in a row, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 Friday night. The Phillies’ winning streak has come on the road. They have won nine of 11 overall. St. Louis has dropped three in a row after winning five straight.
Burnett (5-6) threw 111 pitches to earn his 24th complete game. He struck out three, walked one and hit two batters. Burnett, who came into the season as a career .110 hitter, also contributed an RBI double and scored. Jaime Garcia (3-1) pitched into the sixth inning, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks. He lost his third start in a row to the Phillies.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The College World Series game between Virginia and Mississippi was suspended after a 93-minute lightning and rain delay at TD Ameritrade Park on Friday night. The game, tied 0-0, will resume Saturday at 2-p.m. Central Time, with Virginia batting in the top of the second inning. The Cavaliers have runners on first and second base. A news release from the NCAA said persons with a game ticket for Game 12 can bring it to the stadium for re-entry to the game. Those who have Flash Seats tickets can bring their credit card or the mobile app to the gate for entry.
Virginia would advance to next week’s best-of-three finals with a win. If Mississippi wins, the teams would play again Sunday. Texas and Vanderbilt will play a second bracket final on Saturday at 7 p.m. following the Longhorns’ 4-0 win on Friday. Friday night’s game originally was delayed because of lightning. Heavy rain moved in and forced the suspension of the game. More than an inch of rain fell in a half-hour at TD Ameritrade Park. Those who have season tickets for the game will need to use the conditional ticket marked for 7 p.m., according to the NCAA.
Reserved tickets will go on sale today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at the box office. If needed, the NCAA said it will hold a deciding game between the University of Mississippi and the University of Virginia on Sunday.
CHICAGO (AP) — Cubs executive Theo Epstein says he is pleased with Manny Ramirez’s impact on the organization so far, and the former major league star could join Triple-A Iowa next week. Ramirez signed a minor league deal in May and reported to the team’s facility in Mesa to get some at-bats in extended spring training. When Ramirez reports to Iowa, he will be a player-coach for Chicago’s top farm club.
Asked about Ramirez on Friday, Epstein says “Probably sometime next week that he’s ready to go to Iowa, but we’re not in a rush because he’s making an impact with the young kids,” in Arizona. The 42-year-old Ramirez is a .312 hitter with 555 home runs in 2,302 games covering 19 major league seasons.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs will head into training camp next month with plenty of questions. Who will replace Brandon Flowers at cornerback? When will Pro Bowl linebacker Justin Houston show up? Will quarterback Alex Smith land a long-term contract? Who will earn the open spots along the offensive line? And for that matter, the defensive line? The Chiefs had their final workout Thursday of a mandatory three-day minicamp.
Along with another no-show by Houston, who like Smith is opening for a long-term contract, the biggest news of the day was wide receiver Dwayne Bowe coming up lame. Bowe appeared to be slightly hobbled after making a catch in the end zone.
The Chiefs also waived defensive tackle Chas Alecxih.
