WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad is expected to honor Iowa wrestling legend Dan Gable on his 64th birthday next week. Branstad will issue a special proclamation declaring Oct. 25 as Dan Gable Day during an event at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo. In a press release, Branstad says Gable represents the “commitment, perseverance, and dedication” that are the foundation of Iowa. Gable won three state wrestling titles in high school, two NCAA titles at Iowa State University, and an Olympic gold medal in 1972. Then, he coached the University of Iowa’s wrestling team to 15 NCAA championships and 21 consecutive Big 10 titles.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Beltran’s availability for Game 4 of the NL championship series was uncertain after the St. Louis Cardinals slugger left Wednesday’s game with a strained left knee. Subbing for Beltran in right field, Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat to help the Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 for a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Still, the prospect of losing Beltran for even a game or two is troubling for St. Louis given his postseason pedigree. Beltran leads the Cardinals with a .400 postseason batting average. He has three home runs and six RBIs in the playoffs this year and leads all players with eight extra-base hits.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer after subbing for an injured Carlos Beltran and the St. Louis Cardinals chased Matt Cain before a 3½ hour rain delay in the seventh inning of a 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants for a 2-1 series lead Wednesday night.
Kyle Lohse worked around a season-worst five walks in 5 2-3 innings. Mitchell Boggs struck out Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt with two on to end the seventh and Jason Motte earned the first two-inning save of his career to reward what remained of a sellout crowd of 45,850, perhaps a third, that stuck around.
Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro had two hits and a clean game in the field, two days after Matt Holliday rammed him breaking up a double-play ball. Manager Bruce Bochy had said there would be no retaliation, and Game 3 was collision-free.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Game 3 of the NL championship series is being delayed because of rain in the seventh inning with the St. Louis Cardinals leading San Francisco 3-1. The game at Busch Stadium was stopped with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. An announcement was posted on the scoreboard saying a severe weather warning had been issued by the National Weather Service. The Cardinals and Giants are tied at one game each. Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer off Giants ace Matt Cain in the third inning. Carpenter came into the game after Cardinals star Carlos Beltran left after the first inning because of a strained left knee. This is the third game delayed by rain this postseason. Two games between the Yankees and Orioles in Baltimore were affected.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli tells The Associated Press he is not concerned about his job status despite a 1-5 start by the team in his fourth season in charge. Pioli says he has made mistakes, though he refused to discuss any of them in detail He did say they encompass all facets of his job: player personnel, fan relationships and a failure to fully understand the role of the GM in Kansas City.
Pioli admitted that changes are necessary, though he said “getting into the specifics publicly is not in anybody’s best interest right now.” He did say that he remains confident in coach Romeo Crennel, who also serves as the team’s defensive coordinator. The Chiefs are off this week before playing Oakland on Oct. 28.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The struggling offense of the Kansas City Chiefs has more than a quarterback controversy to work on this week. The Chiefs (1-5) have not scored a touchdown in the last eight quarters while losing 9-6 to Baltimore and getting blown out 38-10 at Tampa Bay. Here’s how bad it was for offensive coordinator Brian Daboll last week in Tampa: When the Chiefs had the ball, the Buccaneers outscored them 7-3. Trying to get the offense back on track is a big priority for the Chiefs during their bye week.
LAUGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (AP) — Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith is planning to auction his 13 Gold Gloves and a pair of World Series rings he received from the St. Louis Cardinals in retirement. SCP Auctions said Tuesday that bidding for the online sale will start Nov. 14 and end Dec. 1. SCP said Smith decided on the auction, which also includes 11 All-Star game rings, as part of estate and family planning.
In a separate sale, bidding began Tuesday at Goldin Auctions for Pete Rose’s copy of the 1990 agreement in which he agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball following an investigation of his gambling while manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Bidding runs through Nov. 17th.
