Drake seeks to bounce back from Rice’s departure

Sports

October 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake’s Mark Phelps has what every coach in the country wants: five returning starters. But Phelps also enters his fifth season with the Bulldogs trying to replace perhaps the best starter he had. Drake suffered a major blow in the offseason when Rayvonte Rice, a guard who averaged nearly 17 points a game in 2011-12, announced he was transferring. Rice eventually landed at Illinois. Phelps will attempt to replace him with more production from five players coming back and the eight new guys. The Bulldogs, who are 62-69 in four seasons under Phelps after winning the Missouri Valley in 2007-08, open at Detroit on Nov. 17.

Iowa’s Hyde listed as a starter for Hawkeyes

Sports

October 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa senior cornerback Micah Hyde is listed as a starter for Saturday’s game at Michigan State despite being arrested over the weekend.  The 21-year-old Hyde was booked early Saturday morning at an Iowa City bar on suspicion of public intoxication and interference with official acts.  Tight end Ray Hamilton and offensive lineman Drew Clark were also arrested in separate alcohol-related incidents, which came during the team’s bye week.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement released Saturday that he was disappointed because all three players have been “good citizens” during their time in our program. Ferentz said the Hawkeyes will follow protocol set by the school’s student-athlete code of conduct and take additional measures internally.  Hamilton is also listed on this week’s depth chart as a backup.

Nationals rally past Cardinals in Game 1

Sports

October 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pinch hitter Tyler Moore blooped a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning and the Washington Nationals won in their postseason debut, beating the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in 3-2 Sunday in an NL playoff opener. The Nationals overcame a wild start by 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez, then watched their bullpen shut down St. Louis in the late innings. Ahead 2-1 in the seventh, the Cardinals didn’t score after loading the bases with no outs. The NL East champion Nationals led the majors with 98 wins this season, and go for a 2-0 series lead today (Monday) when Jordan Zimmermann opposes Jaime Garcia. You can cathc the game this afternoon, on KJAN.  The Cardinals made it to the best-of-five division series by beating Atlanta in the wild-card matchup Friday.

Chiefs unhappy over fans cheering injury to Cassel

Sports

October 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Members of the Kansas City Chiefs angrily spoke out Sunday against thousands of fans who cheered when quarterback Matt Cassel left a 9-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a head injury. Cassel has been the focus of frustrated fans for the past couple years, many of them booing him when he appeared during a celebrity softball game this summer. The angst reached a tipping point when Cassel, who committed four turnovers against Baltimore, was hammered by the Ravens’ Haloti Ngata while completing a pass in the fourth quarter. Cassel remained on his back for several minutes while fans began to cheer. He eventually got to his feet with some help and walked off the field under his own power. “It’s 100-percent sickening,” Chiefs tackle Eric Winston said of the fans’ reaction.

(Updated story) NFL Final: Baltimore 9 Kansas City 6

Sports

October 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Ray Rice ran for 101 yards, Justin Tucker made all three of his field goal attempts and the Baltimore Ravens defense kept the Kansas City Chiefs out of the end zone in the fourth quarter to preserve a 9-6 victory Sunday.  Joe Flacco threw for 187 yards and was picked off once, but the Ravens (4-1) were still able to come up with enough points to beat the Chiefs (1-4), who turned it over four times.

Matt Cassel threw for 92 yards, was intercepted twice and credited with two lost fumbles before leaving in the fourth quarter with what the Chiefs described as a head injury.  Brady Quinn entered and led Kansas City to another field goal by Ryan Succop, but the Chiefs defense couldn’t get the ball back and Baltimore ran out the clock.
