AMES, Iowa (AP) — Senior point guard Korie Lucious was supposed to bring stability to Iowa State after transferring from Michigan State. Instead, Lucious has been as inconsistent as any player on Iowa State’s roster this season. Lucious has committed 41 turnovers in 10 games — more than any other player from a major-conference school in the country. Lucious committed seven turnovers — or six more than his freshman counterpart, Iowa’s Anthony Clemmons — in an 80-71 loss to the Hawkeyes last week.
Third-year coach Fred Hoiberg has put control of his offense in the hands of Lucious, and he isn’t about to bail on his senior now. Lucious has shown signs of improvement. He’s averaging over 13 points and seven assists over his last four games.
The Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources says two men have been charged following an incident that occurred Saturday afternoon in Harrison County, when a shotgun slug was fired into an occupied home while deer hunting. 64-year old Stephen Kenkel, of Grinnell was charged with one count of shooting over a roadway and one count of shooting within 200 yards of an inhabited building. 52-year old Gail C. Lamberson, of Logan was charged with one count of shooting within 200 yards of an inhabited building.
The incident occurred when deer were crossing the roadway between Kenkel and the house and Kenkel shot at the deer. The shot went through a wall eventually lodged in a ceiling inside the house. The house was occupied at the time, but no one was injured.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Former Iowa defensive back Micah Hyde plans to fight the disorderly conduct ticket he received over the weekend and a public intoxication charge he received in October. Hyde’s lawyer, Cathy Cartee, said Monday that Hyde did nothing wrong when police responded to a loud party in his apartment building early Sunday, but she hasn’t seen the complaint yet.
Cartee says Hyde also denies being intoxicated during the October incident. But Hyde pleaded guilty to interfering with police and was ordered to pay nearly $400. Hyde is scheduled for two trials in January. The public intoxication case will be heard on Jan. 22, and the disorderly conduct charge will be heard on Jan. 24.
Hyde started 38 games for the Hawkeyes before his career ended last month.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — George Niang scored 15 points and Iowa State pounded Nebraska-Omaha 93-65 Sunday night. Niang, a freshman, scored 11 of his points in the first half as the Cyclones (7-3) led 52-28 at the break. Iowa State was coming back after a loss Friday night to Iowa. Iowa State led 18-2 before Nebraska-Omaha (2-9) made six shots in a row to cut the lead to four points. But they only made four shots the rest of the half in 22 attempts.
Will Clyburn, who did not score in the Iowa game, finished with 11 points against the Mavericks. Anthony Booker and Tyrus McGee also had 11 points for the Cyclones, while Percy Gibson and Chris Babb scored 10 apiece. John Karhoff scored 13 points to lead Nebraska-Omaha, in its second year in Division I. These teams last met in 1991, when Iowa State won 114-57.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa defensive back Micah Hyde had another run-in with police over the weekend and now faces a disorderly conduct charge. The Quad-City Times reports that Hyde was ticketed Sunday after Iowa City police responded to a loud party in his apartment building.
Hyde, who started 38 games for Iowa before his career ended last month, was also arrested in October on suspicion of public intoxication and interference with official acts. Hyde pleaded guilty to interference and was ordered to pay nearly $400 in fines, but he faces a Dec. 27 court date on the intoxication charge. Hyde is scheduled to make his first court appearance on the disorderly conduct charge on Jan. 24.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Hallie Christofferson scored 18 points Sunday and No. 22 Iowa State defeated Fairfield 60-43. Chelsea Poppens, back after missing three games with a concussion, had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Cyclones (6-1). Brynn Williamson scored 12 points, all on 3-pointers, and Nikki Moody had 10 assists and seven rebounds. Iowa State, which never trailed and led by as many as 24 points, bounced back from a 50-42 loss at Iowa on Thursday.
Katie Cizynski scored 13 points to lead Fairfield (5-3). The Stags shot just 32 percent from the field and were outrebounded 43-27.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie Travis Benjamin’s electrifying 93-yard punt return touchdown gave Cleveland momentum and the Browns won their third straight game, 30-7 over the emotionally drained Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Benjamin’s game-changing runback helped the Browns (5-8) continue their resurgence under second-year coach Pat Shurmur, whose future in Cleveland remains uncertain. The Browns have one more win than last season, and their longest winning streak since 2009.
Trent Richardson had a pair of 1-yard TD runs for Cleveland. Jamaal Charles ran for 165 yards, breaking off an 80-yard TD run on the game’s first play for Kansas City. It was the first road game for the Chiefs (2-11) following linebacker Jovan Belcher’s suicide. The 25-year-old killed his girlfriend at their home before driving to the team’s practice facility on Dec. 1 and shooting himself.
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Marc Sonnen connected on seven 3-pointers and had 21 points to lead Northern Iowa to an 82-77 overtime victory over George Mason, snapping Patriots’ 14-game home winning streak. Anthony James scored five of his 19 points in overtime and Seth Tuttle hit six straight free throws in the game’s final 22 seconds to seal the victory for the Panthers (6-3). Tuttle finished with 18 points, going 12-for-14 from the foul line.
George Mason (6-4) got 20 points from Sherrod Wright, but was undone by some costly miscues and inconsistent play from point guards Bryon Allen and Corey Edwards. They combined for 21 points but also had eight turnovers between them. George Mason trailed 80-77 before Allen committed a turnover with three seconds remaining in overtime. The Patriots’ Johnny Williams was forced to immediately foul Tuttle, who hit his final two free throws to provide the final margin.
