Des Moines Lands NCAA Men’s Tournament Games

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines will host first and second-round games of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in 2016.

The NCAA announced Monday that Iowa’s capital city will be among eight sites to host early-round games next season.

Landing such a prestigious event is a major coup for Des Moines, which has hoped to host the NCAA tournament ever since Wells Fargo Arena opened in 2005.

The arena hosted the NCAA women’s basketball tournament — which included legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt’s last game — and the NCAA wrestling championships in 2013.

Iowa State will serve as the tournament host, so the Cyclones can’t play in Des Moines in 2016.

Heyward to Cards, Braves get Miller in 4-Man Deal

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have dealt outfielder Jason Heyward and reliever Jordan Walden to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Shelby Miller and a minor-leaguer.

The deal was announced Monday and ends Heyward’s tenure with his hometown team.

The 25-year-old outfielder never lived up to expectations after a brilliant rookie season, when he homered in his first at-bat and was voted to the All-Star Game. This past season, he hit .271 with 11 homers, 58 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. He also won his second Golden Glove.

Miller went 10-9 with a 3.74 for the Cardinals, after going 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA in 2013.

Walden was 0-2 with a 2.88 ERA and three saves.

The Braves also acquired pitcher Tyrell Jenkins, who played for Class A Palm Beach last season.

Freshman Bryanna Fernstrom poured in 25 points as the Iowa State women opened the season with a 98-76 win over South Carolina Upstate. ISU coach Bill Fennelly was happy with the win but not pleased with the effort on defense. The Cyclones led by as many as 25 points in the opening half and it was never close after that. Fennelly says the Cyclones need to shore up the defense going forward.

Brynn Williamson had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Cyclones who visit Drake on Tuesday.

Chiefs defense preserves 24-20 win over Seahawks

Sports

November 16th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs stopped the Seattle Seahawks on fourth down three times late in the fourth quarter Sunday, holding on for a tense 24-20 victory in a matchup of playoff contenders. Jamaal Charles ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns, and Knile Davis also ran for a score, as the Chiefs (7-3) won their fifth straight game and moved into a tie for first in the AFC West.

Russell Wilson threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, and Marshawn Lynch had 124 yards rushing for Seattle (6-4). But the Seahawks’ star running back, fresh off a four-touchdown game, was stuffed twice by the Kansas City defense with the outcome hanging in the balance.

The Seahawks’ last-chance drive ended when Wilson threw incomplete on fourth-and-18 at their 20-yard line with 1:13 left in the game.
