Police investigate after dog left in car at Kauffman Stadium

Sports

June 21st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City police are investigating after someone left a dog in a sweltering car at Kauffman Stadium during a Kansas City Royals baseball game. The dog was rescued by fans who heard it whimpering when they left a game on Sunday. The fans took the dog, which had no access to food and water, into the stadium and left a note for the car’s owner.

As of Monday afternoon, no one had claimed the dog, which is being kept at a shelter. It will be up for adoption if the owners don’t contact the shelter within five days. The Kansas City Star reports one of the dog’s rescuers is interested in adopting the puppy. The penalty for animal cruelty is up to $1,000 or 180 days in jail.

Chiefs S Berry wins PFWA award for overcoming adversity

June 21st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry has won the George Halas Award for overcoming adversity to succeed. The Professional Football Writers of America honored Berry on Monday. Berry, the AP’s Comeback Player of the Year, overcame a diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2014 to return to the field and have an All-Pro season in 2015. The 47th Halas Award winner, Berry is the first member of the Chiefs to receive the honor.

He underwent six rounds of chemotherapy treatment from Dec. 10, 2014 until May 13, 2015. Berry was declared cancer free last June 22, and he was on the field for the first training camp practice July 29. Berry returned to the starting lineup in Week 2, was third on the team with 61 tackles (55 solo), and had a pair of interceptions.

Okla. St. rides Buffett’s gem to 1-0 CWS win over Arizona

Sports

June 21st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tyler Buffett limited Arizona to three hits over eight innings, and Oklahoma State took command of its bracket in the College World Series with a 1-0 victory Monday night. The Cowboys, who beat UC Santa Barbara by the same score on Saturday, became the first team in the CWS’ 70 years to win back-to-back 1-0 games.

Buffett (9-3) allowed three singles in the first five innings, walked two and struck out six. Trey Cobb took over in the ninth and earned his sixth save. Oklahoma State scored in the fourth when Donnie Walton doubled and came home on Garrett Benge’s single. Otherwise, Buffett and Arizona starter Bobby Dalbec (10-5) matched zeroes through eight innings the same way the Cowboys’ Thomas Hatch did with UC Santa Barbara’s Shane Bieber on Saturday.

The Cowboys (43-20) on Friday can clinch a spot in next week’s finals with a win. Arizona (45-22) plays UC Santa Barbara in an elimination game Wednesday.

Cardinals stop 5-game slide with 3-2 victory over Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) — Brandon Moss and Jhonny Peralta homered against John Lackey, and the St. Louis Cardinals stopped a five-game slide by holding off the Chicago Cubs for a 3-2 victory on Monday night.

Aledmys Diaz added an RBI single and Jaime Garcia (5-6) pitched into the seventh inning as the Cardinals got back on track following their first winless homestand of at least two series since 1983. It was their first trip to Wrigley Field since they were eliminated by the Cubs in the NL Division Series last year.

Seung Hwan Oh got four outs and Trevor Rosenthal worked a shaky ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances. Catcher Yadier Molina made a great play to throw out rookie Albert Almora Jr. trying to take third on a ball in the dirt, and Jason Heyward popped out with runners on the corners to end the game.

Gauchos’ 5-3 victory brings rare early exit for Miami at CWS

Sports

June 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Pinch hitter Ryan Cumberland’s two-run single broke a tie and Noah Davis and Kyle Nelson combined to hold down No. 3 national seed Miami’s offense in UC Santa Barbara’s 5-3 victory in a College World Series elimination game Monday. The Gauchos (43-19-1) kept their first CWS appearance going and will play Wednesday against the loser of Monday night’s game between Oklahoma State and Arizona. The Hurricanes (50-14) went 0-2 for only the second time in their 25 CWS appearances. Their other two-and-out was in 1979.

Santa Barbara struck for four runs after a 1-hour, 2-minute rain delay in the sixth inning. Cumberland made it 3-1 with his one-out single down the first-base line, and the Gauchos used back-to-back squeeze plays for two more runs. Miami opened the scoring on Zack Collins’ 16th homer of the season in the first inning off Davis (7-4), and the Gauchos’ JJ Muno singled in the tying run in the bottom half off Danny Garcia (9-5).
