Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Beautiful day today.  First nice day of the year.  No wind and warm.  Ben has continued his great play.  Good to see him shoot even today.  Matt started with a three over but finished even par after that to shoot +3.  Both guys below 40 is good at Harlan.  Great to see Mason shoot 45.  Nice score for him with one bad hole.  Austin, Drey, and Braden had some struggles but also some good holes.  Good experience for them to play an away course.  I know they will continue to work on their games.  This was a good win for us while missing several of our golfers tonight.  Hope we can keep this up for tomorrow’s match.  We were missing a few tonight with sickness and FFA convention.  Nice to see several others step up today in their absence.”

Drake women’s programs dominate MVC competition

Sports

April 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

A banner season continues for the women’s sports programs at Drake University. At the start of the week Bulldog women’s soccer, basketball, tennis and softball are a combined 47-0-1 against Missouri Valley Conference competition.

That’s Drake softball coach Rich Calvert. His team is riding a 21 game winning streak and is 18-0 in the Valley heading into Tuesday night’s game at home against Northern Iowa. The Bulldogs have a five game lead in the loss column on second place Missouri State with seven games remaining.

Pitching and defense have been keys. The Bulldog pitching staff has an earned run average of 1.08 in conference play and opponents are batting .176. Junior Nicole Newman has been dominant with a 9-0 record in the Valley but she has plenty of help. Freshman Nicole Timmons is 7-0 in the Valley.

Sports

April 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Eight Olympians will be in the field for Saturday’s women’s 100-meter hurdles and the men’s 110-meter hurdles at the Drake Relays. The races will include both world record holders.

That’s Drake Relays Director Blake Boldon who says world record holder Kendra Harrison will headline the women’s field.

Boldon says the time period between two and three in the afternoon will also find several Olympians in the men’s and women’s 400 meter hurdles.

Tonight’s (Tuesday night’s) action is highlighted by the Grand Blue Mile on the streets of downtown Des Moines.

Midwest/National Sports update: 4/24/18

Sports

April 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — TCU came into the season shooting for a fifth straight trip to the College World Series. With a month left in the regular season, the Horned Frogs will be hard-pressed to even make the NCAA Tournament. Injuries to top starting pitcher Jared Janczak and offensive star Luken Baker have hamstrung TCU. The Frogs probably will need to win the Big 12 Tournament next month to make an NCAA regional for the 14th time in 15 years.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Right-hander Adam Wainwright was placed on the 10-day disabled list by the St. Louis Cardinals because of right elbow inflammation. The 36-year-old is 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA in three starts. He had been scheduled to start Tuesday against the New York Mets. St. Louis made the move retroactive to Friday. Right-hander John Brebbia was recalled from Triple-A Memphis.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Former North Carolina defensive tackle Dee Hardison, who went on to play 11 seasons in the National Football League, has died. He was 61. Hardison was named to The Associated Press All-America first team in 1977. He started on a defense that led the Tar Heels to an 8-3-1 record and a final ranking of 17th in the AP poll.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will lead his team through one more spring practice, not knowing if quarterback Shea Patterson will be able to do more than practice in 2018. Two days later, most of the Wolverines are traveling to Paris to see some sights. By the time the Wolverines return, they hope to know if the NCAA will give Patterson a waiver to play immediately instead of sitting out the season after transferring from Ole Miss.

RIDGEDALE, Mo. (AP) — Kirk Triplett holed out from a bunker for birdie on the first playoff hole in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf to lift himself and partner Paul Broadhurst past Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman. Broadhurst and Triplett closed with a 6-under 48 on the Top of the Rock par-3 course to match Langer and Lehman at 24 under. Langer and Lehman had a 47.

Sports

April 23rd, 2018 by admin

Atlantic girls golf finished 2nd behind Waukee (384) shooting 410 at the Ames Invitational on Monday. Medalist Brooke Boardman, 83, Waukee. Atlantic: Alyssa Ginther, 3rd, 88.  Baylee Newell, 6th, 95. Cambry Miller, 110.  Anna Wiser, 117. Hannah Alf, 122.

Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson: “Perfect golf day. Played Veenker Memorial at Ames Turk Bowman Invite.  Par 73.  12 teams.  Tough course.  This was a great way to start the tournament part of our season.  For 3 of the girls it was their first 18 hole tourney.  There was a lot of trouble on this course and Alyssa was able to avoid most of it-gave us another day of quality play.  Also got a good round out of Baylee despite not being 100%.  The whole team for the most part had a pretty good day.”
