Arenado, Marquez lift Rockies to 11-1 win over Cardinals

Sports

September 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a grand slam, German Marquez pitched five solid innings for his first major league win and the Colorado Rockies slowed the St. Louis Cardinals’ playoff chase with an 11-1 victory on Wednesday. The Cardinals entered the day tied with New York and San Francisco atop the NL wild-card standings. The Mets and Giants both played later.

Arenado broke open the game in the second with his NL-leading 39th homer of the season. His fourth career slam made it 6-1. Luke Weaver (1-4) was roughed up by the Rockies, surrendering seven hits and six runs in two innings. Before this game, the right-hander had allowed 12 earned runs in his last seven starts combined.

This was a memorable day for Marquez (1-0), who made his first big league start after three appearances out of the bullpen. He allowed one run and struck out three.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado reliever Carlos Estevez and St. Louis outfielder Jose Martinez faced each other in an unusual way — a playful post-national anthem standoff . With Wednesday’s game about to start, Estevez and Martinez stood near their dugouts — with their hand over their heart — and refused to back down until the other moved first.

Martinez’s teammates offered support by bringing him water and a batting helmet. Estevez’s teammates countered by spraying him with sunscreen and giving him a catcher’s mask. The befuddled umpiring crew didn’t quite know what to do.

Apparently, Estevez relented first and made a winner of Martinez, who jumped up and down in celebration before retreating to the dugout. The start of the game was delayed several minutes by the good-natured prank.

Cardinals pound Colorado, Cubs handle Cincinatti Tuesday

Sports

September 21st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Cardinals received a great offensive performance from pitcher Adam Wainwright in a 10-5 pounding of Colorado. Wainwright drove in as many runs as he allowed over 5 1/3 innings, hitting a two-run double and a two-run single. Matt Adams and Jedd Gyorko homered for the Cardinals, who have won four straight to catch the Mets and Giants.

The Cubs handled Cincinnati 6-1 to slice their magic number to four for clinching home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs. Jon Lester laced an RBI double and improved to 18-4 for the NL Central champs by giving up just one run over seven innings. Anthony Rizzo drove in three for the Cubs, who improved to a major league-best 96-55.

Iowa’s Big 4 classic extended through 2019

Sports

September 20th, 2016 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The annual doubleheader featuring Iowa’s four Division I teams has been extended through 2019.

The event, known as the Hy-Vee Big 4 Classic, features the Hawkeyes and Cyclones playing Northern Iowa and Drake on a rotating basis in the state’s capital city of Des Moines. The doubleheader began as a compromise in 2012 so that high-majors Iowa and Iowa State could still face their instate rivals without having to play a true road game.

The event has taken off lately, with sellouts in each of the last two seasons.

Northern Iowa and Iowa, which both advanced to the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, play each other in Des Moines on Dec. 17. The Cyclones, who were Sweet 16 qualifiers last season, will face Drake.

Another slow start leaves Chiefs perplexed after loss

Sports

September 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Maybe the Chiefs should have petitioned the NFL to avoid noon kickoffs. They might be 2-0. Kansas City got out of the gate like a beat-up Pinto trying to find first gear on Sunday, the second straight slow start for a team that can ill afford to dig out of holes.

And unlike the previous week, when the Chiefs managed the biggest comeback in franchise history to beat the San Diego Chargers, they were unable to come all the way back in a 19-12 loss to the Houston Texans.

Coach Andy Reid says the Chiefs made too many mistakes to come out on the right end of the score. One thing that might get the Chiefs off to a faster start against the New York Jets this Sunday? The return of four-time Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles, their biggest difference-maker on offense.

Charles has been practicing for several weeks after surgery to repair his torn right ACL last season, but he has been inactive for the first two games. Reid says Charles has told him there’s a chance he could be ready to play against the Jets.

Quarterback rotation will continue at Iowa State

Sports

September 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell expects to continue rotating quarterbacks on Saturday when the Cyclones host San Jose State. Joel Lanning and Jacob Park split time under center in a 41-20 loss at TCU.”They both earned the right to play last week. I thought that helped both of them. I thought it helped Joel maybe sit back and catch his breath and see what was going on. It was good to get Jacob into the football game. That’s his first meaningful reps he’s really gotten, at least when the score really means something at that point. I think Jacob earned that through practice and fall camp.”

Campbell said there will be no set rotation going into the game. “I think we’ll continue to compete at that position, but I really trust both those guys to play and we’ll try to do whatever gives us the best situation the opportunity to be successful. They’ve both got skill sets to really help our football team be successful.”

Campbell says he did not discount the possibility of using both quarterbacks on the same drive. He says the Cyclones’ practice habits are improving and that is why they made progress against TCU. “We practiced really well at fall camp. The week leading up to our first home football game I didn’t think we practiced really well. And then it’s interesting on how we kind of rebounded the next week. We were ‘so-so.’ We were a lot better last week, and I just kind think that’s going to continue to get better.”

Iowa State is a better than touchdown favorite against San Jose State but Campbell says they don’t feel like it. He says “When you’re 0-3, I don’t know if you’re supposed to win anything. From the outside looking in, I think the reality of it is, ‘what can we do to get better?,’ and that’s the approach that we’ve taken from Day 1, knowing that the outcome will be predicated on what our process is.”
