Clement carries No. 10 Wisconsin to 17-9 win over Iowa

Sports

October 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Corey Clement ran for 134 yards and a touchdown and 10th-ranked Wisconsin used a stout defense to beat Iowa 17-9 on Saturday and snap a two-game skid. Alex Hornibrook had 197 yards passing for the Badgers (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten), who won for the fourth straight time in Iowa City.

Backup Bart Houston threw a touchdown pass for Wisconsin, and Clement’s 1-yard TD run put the Badgers ahead 14-6 midway through the third quarter. But Wisconsin was carried by its defense. The Badgers allowed just 236 yards on 60 plays and held the Hawkeyes (5-3, 3-2) without a touchdown for the first time all season — just a week after Iowa scored 49 points against Purdue.

C.J. Beathard had 153 yards passing for Iowa, which lost its third straight at home. The Hawkeyes offense, which has been inconsistent at times this season, bottomed out. Beathard hardly had any open receivers — and when he did, he missed them more than once. Iowa’s hopes for a run at the West title now seem dim, with Penn State, Michigan and Nebraska still on its schedule.

The Hawkeyes get their bye next week. They open November with a night game on the road against the Nittany Lions. The Badgers brutal stretch in the Big Ten continues next week when they host the Cornhuskers, who entered Saturday ranked eighth in the country. Wisconsin then travels to resurgent Northwestern before its schedule eases considerably in November.

The Iowa Hawkeyes try to climb back into the Big Ten West Division title race when they host 10th ranked Wisconsin. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says both teams use a physical style of play. (click on the left side of each audio bar to hear comments)

Ferentz says special teams and field position are magnified when playing the Badgers.

Ferentz says a big play could determine the outcome.

Atlantic wants to end on high note at Harlan

Sports

October 21st, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans are preparing for their final game of the season tonight on the road at Harlan.  The Trojans are trying to end the season on a positive note after struggling to a 1-7 record through a very tough Class 3A District 7.  The Cyclones have the same idea in mind as they come into the game with a 3-5 overall record.  Atlantic coach Mike McDermott said his players have kept up the intensity in preparation.

Coach McDermott said a key to playing against any Harlan team is to try to win the field position battle and getting key stops in order to do that.  If the Trojans want to have success in slowing down the Cyclones offense they are going to have to be ready to slow down the passing game as Quarterback Deren Schmitz has thrown for 1,789 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.

Harlan has played a lot of close games throughout the season and are coming off a big rally last week to pick up a win over Denison-Schleswig. Harlan Head Coach Curt Bladt hopes they can carry that second half performance over to this week.

Coach Bladt said his team has to be ready for anything from the Trojans but his team won’t change anything drastically for the match-up.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and Cyclones tonight on KJAN. Join Chris Parks and Mike Smith for the broadcast on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the KJAN mobile app.  You can also catch live streaming video of the game on KJANTV.  Tune in for our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm, the Dvorak Tire and Service Pre-Game Show at 6:30pm, and Kickoff at 7:30pm.

LB Vince Biegel set to return for No. 10 Wisconsin vs. Iowa

Sports

October 21st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — No. 10 Wisconsin should have top linebacker Vince Biegel back Saturday at Iowa. Biegel missed two games with a right foot injury, with Wisconsin losing to No. 3 Michigan and No. 2 Ohio State.

Coach Paul Chryst said Thursday that Biegel practiced all week, and that he plans to play him against the Hawkeyes. Biegel will reunite with fellow outside linebacker T.J. Watt to give Wisconsin (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) one of the top pass-rushing duos in the conference.

You can hear the game live from Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City Saturday morning, beginning with the pre-game show at 9, and the kick-off at 11, on KJAN.

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware can coexist with Jamaal Charles

Sports

October 21st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The assumption all along has been that the Chiefs’ Spencer Ware would provide a nice stop-gap at running back until Jamaal Charles returned to full-time duty from his devastating knee injury. Ware showed last weekend that he’s not going anywhere. In fact, he made quite an argument for bringing Charles out of the bullpen in a relief role.

The bruising fantasy darling ran 24 times for 131 yards and a touchdown to lead Kansas City to a 26-10 victory in Oakland . Ware also had a couple of nice catches, showcasing some of the same versatility that had made Charles a mainstay in the lineup.

“When you talk about Jamaal, you’re talking about a Hall of Fame player. We always say, ‘You’re not going to replace Jamaal, that’s not what you do,'” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But I don’t want to take anything away from Ware and the way he plays. He’s so tough. “Having them both out there,” Reid added, “that’s a win-win, I think.”

Indeed, Charles had more carries last weekend in his second game back from a torn ACL, and even found the end zone for the first time in more than a year. But it was Ware who carried the bulk of the load, and the former LSU standout will likely do the same on Sunday against New Orleans. It was an especially encouraging sign given his struggles holding onto the ball lately.
