Cardinals add 4 to roster to protect from Rule 5 draft

Sports

November 18th, 2016 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals have purchased the contracts of outfielder Magneuris Sierra, infielders Eliezer Alvarez and Edmundo Sosa and right-hander Rowan Wick and added them to their 40-man roster.

Adding them to the roster protects them from the Rule 5 draft.

St. Louis also announced left-hander Tim Cooney was claimed off waivers by the Indians, while outfielders Chad Huffman and Todd Cunningham, infielder Wilfredo Tovar, left-hander Zach Phillips and right-hander Kendry Flores signed minor league contracts that included invites to spring training.

Sierra, Sosa and Alvarez were teammates at Class A Peoria this past season, while Wick went 2-0 with a 2.44 ERA in 44 games between Class A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield.

Chiefs without Maclin; Houston could play vs Tampa Bay

Sports

November 18th, 2016 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs again will be without top wide receiver Jeremy Maclin when they play Tampa Bay on Sunday, though it’s increasingly likely linebacker Justin Houston will make his season debut.

Maclin was listed out on Friday’s final injury report with a groin strain. He hurt it in practice a few weeks ago, tweaked it against Jacksonville and was inactive last Sunday at Carolina.

Houston has not played after surgery in February to repair the ACL in his left knee. The four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher has been practicing for several weeks, though, and coach Andy Reid indicated Friday that he could be active against the Buccaneers.

Defensive end Jaye Howard is questionable with a hip flexor, while linebacker Derrick Johnson and cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Phillip Gaines are questionable with injuries.

W. Christian beats Regina 47-34, ends Regals’ title run at 6

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Ben Granstra ran for three touchdowns, Tyson Kooima accounted for three more scores and Hull Western Christian beat Iowa City Regina 47-34 Friday to win the Class 1A state championship and deny the Regals a seventh consecutive title.

Granstra ground out 180 yards on 39 carries and topped off his big day with a 1-yard TD run that put the back-and-forth game out of reach and gave Western Christian (12-1) its first state championship.

Regina (11-2), which had won 33 straight playoff games, was done in by five turnovers.

Isaac Vollstedt ran for 189 yards and three touchdowns for the Regals, but it wasn’t enough against a Western Christian team that was in only its 13th season of football. Western lost to Regina 35-28 in last year’s championship game.

Big 12 picks Cowboys stadium for football championships

Sports

November 18th, 2016 by admin

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 will hold its newly reinstated football championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The conference announced the site of its five title games from 2017-21 on Friday. AT&T Stadium was the leading candidate, considering half the conference’s 10 schools are within a 4 1/2-hour drive of Arlington.

San Antonio and Kansas City, Missouri, were also considered.

AT&T Stadium was the site of the first College Football Playoff championship game in 2015 and annually hosts the Cotton Bowl, one of six games through which the national semifinals rotate.

The Big 12 stopped playing a football championship game after the league shrunk to 10 members in 2011, but members recently decided to restore it.

Atlantic Girls Hoops looks for constant improvement from inexperienced roster

Podcasts, Sports

November 18th, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Girls Basketball team is coming off one of their most successful seasons in recent history with a 13-9 record and a first round postseason win in 2015-16.  It’s up to an inexperienced group of players to try and carry on the program improvement this season.  The Trojan lost 4 of their top 5 scorers from last season to graduation including Erin Olsen who averaged 16 points per game and Tiffany Williams who averaged 10.  Atlantic Head Coach Kelly Juhl knows it’s going to take a balanced team effort to replace the scoring lost from last year’s squad.

The Trojans will have six seniors on the roster but most of those players haven’t experienced extensive time on the floor or been counted on for leadership yet.  Despite that Coach Juhl expects constant improvement from his team throughout the season and says those Seniors have been around the program since he took over so he expects them to step up.

Coach Juhl said they haven’t set a goal for the season as far as wins and losses are concerned, they just want to work hard toward improvement and let the chips fall as they may.

The Trojans open up the 2016-2017 campaign on Monday night at the Atlantic High School Gym against Carroll.  Tipoff for the Varsity contest is set for 7:30pm.  The Trojans will follow that up with a trip to Denison on Tuesday night for another 7:30pm tip.  We’ll have coverage of those contests for you on KJAN.  Chris Parks will have the call with coverage starting at 7:15pm each night.

Listen to the full pre-season interview with Coach Juhl below.

Pella beats Webster City for 3rd state title

Sports

November 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Nick Finney passed for two touchdowns and ran for another and Pella beat Webster City 28-18 Thursday night to win its third consecutive Class 3A state championship. Donovan Holterhaus caught both scoring passes and finished with a championship-game record 10 receptions for 181 yards.

Pella (13-0) notched its 41st consecutive victory and became the fourth 3A team to win three straight titles. Robert Frederiksen rushed for 182 yards and a touchdown out of Webster City’s old-school single-wing offense. But the Lynx (11-2) couldn’t quite match Pella’s versatility — or keep the ball away from Holterhaus.

Seton Hall topples Iowa 91-83

Sports

November 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Myles Powell scored 26 points off the bench, Desi Rodriguez had 25 and Seton Hall beat Iowa 91-83 on Thursday night. Khadeen Carrington added 20 points for the Pirates (3-0), who shot 51 percent from the floor with eight 3s and outscored the Hawkeyes 50-24 in the paint.

Powell buried a 3 and followed by a layup to put Seton Hall up 82-74 with 3:15 to go — and then drilled another long 3 to make it a 10-point game a minute later. Rodriguez followed with a 3 that sent the fans to the exits.

Iowa made a few late 3s to make it close before falling for the first time in 2016-17. Senior Peter Jok had 30 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Tyler Cook scored a career-high 24 points for the Hawkeyes (2-1).
