AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Athletics Department announced today the addition of two schools for its future football schedule in Bowling Green and Tulane.

Iowa State has agreed to terms on a home-and-home series for both teams.

Iowa State will play host to Bowling Green in Ames in 2026 and travel to Bowling Green in 2027. The Iowa State-Tulane series will begin in 2028 in Ames, followed by a trip to New Orleans in 2029.

“The series with Bowling Green allows our program to continue to make inroads in Ohio where Coach Campbell and his staff have strategic recruiting ties,” Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard said. “We are also very excited for our fans to have an opportunity to travel with us on the road to New Orleans when we play Tulane in 2029.”

Iowa State is 2-0 all-time vs. Bowling Green. The Cyclones defeated the Falcons on the road in 1977 (35-2) and at home in 1979 (38-10).

The Cyclones own a 3-1 series lead vs. the Green Wave, winning the last game in the series at home in 1992 (38-14).

Mahomes rallies Chiefs past Broncos, 27-23

DENVER (AP) — Patrick Mahomes is athletic, agile — and ambidextrous, apparently.

Thanks in part to a nifty left-handed throw as he was about to get sacked by Von Miller at midfield on the game-winning drive, the right-handed Mahomes rallied the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs past the Denver Broncos 27-23 on Monday night.

By overcoming a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit, the Chiefs (4-0) took a two-game lead over the Broncos (2-2), their AFC West rivals whom they’ve now beaten six straight times.

The only other remaining unbeaten team is the Los Angeles Rams.

Down 23-13, Mahomes directed a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes and culminated with a 2-yard TD toss to tight end Travis Kelce.

After a three-and-out by Denver, Mahomes added a 60-yard touchdown drive, handing off to Kareem Hunt for the 4-yard score with 1:39 remaining.

On that last drive, Mahomes was getting dragged down by Miller on third-and-5 at midfield when he shifted the ball to his left hand and threw it to Tyreek Hill a yard past the first-down marker at the Broncos 49.

“He’s actually more athletic than people realize”, Denver linebacker Brandon Marshall said. “People talk about his arm, but he can move out of the pocket and make the necessary throws.”

Even with his left hand.

“I didn’t know he threw it with his left hand,” marveled Miller. “He’s a great quarterback.”

“Patrick worked real hard on that left-handed throw,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid quipped. “Some amazing plays there. We’ve seen it in practice but not under those conditions.”

Mahomes proved slippery all night.

“We played well and we got to him but he would scramble out to his right as he likes to do,” Marshall said. “It’s almost like we’d have him in our fingertips and he’d scramble away and throw for a first down.

“The kid can play. He’s going to be really good. He’s really good right now, but we should have won the game.”

It was the first time since 2004 that the Broncos blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead at home.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — Patrick Mahomes rallied the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 27-23 win over the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs took a two-game lead over the Broncos in the AFC West with their sixth straight win over their rivals. Down 23-13, Mahomes directed a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes and culminated with a 2-yard TD toss to tight end Travis Kelce. He then handed off to Kareem Hunt for the 4-yard go-ahead score with 1:39 remaining.

DENVER (AP) — Patrick Mahomes made one of the biggest plays of the game with a left-handed pass. It led to pivotal first down late in the fourth quarter that helped the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-23 comeback win over the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs improved to 4-0.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos ran roughshod over the Kansas City Chiefs but they only ran 22 times and abandoned their ground game late for the second straight week. As a result they opened the door for the Chiefs’ 27-23 fourth-quarter comeback. Instead of being tied with the Chiefs atop the AFC West, the Broncos fell two games behind the unbeaten Chiefs.

UNDATED (AP) — The Cardinals were hovering around .500 when they fired manager Mike Matheny. They went on a second-half run that had them in playoff contention until the season’s penultimate day. Now, with Mike Shildt getting the full-time job, the Cardinals head into the offseason with plenty of hope for the future.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals are looking ahead with hope despite losing 104 games this season. They played better down the stretch, when most of their young prospects were seeing the field every day, and there are more youngsters in the pipeline. No crucial pieces are expected to leave in free agency and manager Ned Yost is signed for another year.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says running back David Montgomery is “day-to-day” after suffering an upper arm injury in last weekend’s loss to TCU. Campbell says an MRI and x-rays were negative and that Montgomery was working out with the team with what he described as a deep bruise. Campbell says Montgomery’s status for Saturday’s game at Oklahoma State is probable.
