Cardinals & Wainwright Agree to 2019 Contract

Sports

October 11th, 2018 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS, MO – October 11, 2018 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have agreed to terms with veteran pitcher Adam Wainwright on a one-year contract for the 2019 season.   Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wainwright, 37, will be entering his 15th season with the Cardinals in 2019, matching Bob Forsch (1974-88) for the 3rd-most seasons as a pitcher in a Redbirds uniform.  Jesse Haines (18 years, 1920-37) and Bob Gibson (17 years, 1959-75) are the only pitchers ahead of them.

“Adam represents everything we think of when asked to describe a winning player, and a winning teammate,” stated Cardinals’ Chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr.   “His value to our team stretches far beyond the box score, and he showed by season’s end that he is still ready and able to compete.”

Wainwright will enter the 2019 season ranked 5th all-time among Cardinals in wins (148) and 2nd in strikeouts (1,623).  The two-time World Series Champion (2006 & 2011) and three-time All-Star (2010, 2013, 2014) ranks 11th among active pitchers in win, 17th in strikeouts and 8th in ERA (3.32), despite missing significant time due to injury in 2011, 2015 and 2018.

“Adam has proven, when healthy, that he still has the ability and the drive to contribute at the highest level,” said Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.  “We saw it in Spring Training, and again late in the season, that once he had overcome his ailments, he was prepared to give us a winning effort every time he took the mound.  There is risk, but it is shared, and this deal gives us added depth as we look to 2019.”

Wainwright missed a total of 149 days while on the disabled list with hamstring and elbow injuries in 2018.  He finished the year with a 2-4 mark and 4.46 ERA in eight games (all starts).  Adam made four starts in September, striking out 25 in his 22.1 innings pitched while going 1-1 with a 4.84 ERA, as the Cardinals went 3-1 in those games.   Despite making fewer September starts than his teammates, “Waino” finished third on the team in innings pitched and strikeouts last month.

A former Rawlings Gold Glove (2009 & 2013) and National League Silver Slugger (2017) award winner, Wainwright owns a career mark of 148-85 with a 3.32 ERA in 352 games (285 starts) covering 1,932.0 innings pitched.  He is the Cardinals all-time leader in postseason games pitched (24) and strikeouts (96) and was on the mound for the Cardinals World Series and National League Championship Series clinching wins in 2006.

UNDATED (AP) — Sixth-ranked West Virginia is the Big 12’s last remaining undefeated team. The 5-0 Mountaineers play at Iowa State. West Virginia has Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback Will Grier. He has thrown for at least 332 yards and three TDs in every game this season. Iowa State is on its third quarterback. True freshman Brock Purdy accounted for 402 total yards and five touchdowns last week in a 48-42 win at then-No. 25 Oklahoma State.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 12 Michigan hosts No. 15 Wisconsin in a Big Ten crossover game that could have major implications in the division races. The Wolverines are starting a tough stretch of games that has them playing Michigan State and Penn State after the Badgers. Wisconsin’s biggest challenge after Michigan is Nov. 10 at Penn State. Indiana is an underdog at home to Iowa, but the Hawkeyes are banged up and will be facing a budding star in Stevie Scott and a precision passer in Peyton Ramsey.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed former Cleveland Browns linebacker Nate Orchard to shore up their pass rush with linebackers Justin Houston and Dee Ford hobbled by injuries. Houston could miss several weeks after hurting his hamstring in Kansas City’s win over Jacksonville. Ford has dealt with a series of minor injuries this season. Their backup, Tanoh Kpassagnon, also has missed time with a bothersome ankle.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Tex Winter, the innovative “Triangle Offense” pioneer who assisted Phil Jackson on NBA championship teams with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, has died. He was 96. Kansas State University said Winter died in Manhattan.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska freshman Adrian Martinez’s performances through four games already has him drawing comparisons to some of the standout quarterbacks coached by Scott Frost. He set school freshman records with 384 yards passing and 441 yards of total offense in a loss at Wisconsin. That was his second straight game with more than 400 yards of total offense. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald calls Martinez a magician. The Cornhuskers visit the Wildcats on Saturday.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Thanks to quarterback Brock Purdy, Iowa State’s playbook suddenly has more options. Purdy had a stunning performance in the Cyclones’ upset of Oklahoma State in what essentially was the college debut for the true freshman. He has given the offense a new look and a new sense of confidence. Next up is a home game Saturday against No. 6 West Virginia.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has let its defense carry the load nearly all season. The Hawkeyes might need some more help from their offense this week at Indiana, like they got in last weekend’s 48-point explosion at Minnesota. The rugged Iowa defense looks a lot thinner at linebacker and in the secondary because of injury.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed former Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles to help during Leonard Fournette’s absence. The 31-year-old Charles worked out for the team in the morning and signed a one-year contract in the afternoon. The Jaguars lost third-string running back Corey Grant for the season and expect to be without Fournette for several more weeks.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs placed right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and safety Armani Watts on injured reserve and signed outside linebacker Frank Zombo to provide depth at that depleted position. Duvernay-Tardif broke a bone in his left leg with a few minutes left in Sunday’s 30-14 victory over Jacksonville. Watts had his promising rookie season cut short after hurting his groin in the game.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA freshman guard Tyger Campbell has a torn ALC in his left knee and will miss the upcoming season. That makes him the third player to be sidelined. The school says Campbell got hurt in practice last Sunday. He averaged 15.5 points and 7.2 assists as a senior at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana. The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
