AP Source: Cardinals, RHP Martinez agree to $51M extension

Sports

February 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Carlos Martinez have agreed to a $51 million, five-year contract extension that buys out his arbitration years and includes two team options, according a person direct knowledge of the deal. The person spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because terms have not been released.

The contract breaks the record for a pitcher reaching arbitration for the first time. The Indians signed Corey Kluber to a $38.5 million, five-year deal in 2015. The 25-year-old Martinez made 31 starts a year ago, posting a 3.04 ERA and assuming the role of staff ace. That lowered his career ERA to 3.32 over parts of four seasons in St. Louis.

Pitcher Michael Wacha is the Cardinals’ only remaining unsigned arbitration-eligible player.

The Atlantic boys basketball team faces a tough Hawkeye 10 road test tonight at Kuemper Catholic.  The Trojans will be trying to avenge an earlier loss for the second time this week. The Kuemper Catholic Knights won the first meeting of the season in Atlantic back on December 20th 73-66.

Atlantic has been lead by Senior Garrett Franken averaging 24 points per game and he had 31 against the Knights in December.  The Trojans are 12-4 and have won their last 4 contests.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on January 17th but was moved due to weather conditions. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the broadcast for you tonight on KJAN. Catch it on AM1220, FM101.1, kjan.com, the KJAN mobile app, or live video on KJANTV. Pregame at 7:20pm with tip-off scheduled for 7:30pm.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Alexis Prince scored 22 points and second-ranked Baylor beat Iowa State 83-52 Wednesday night for its 20th straight win. It was the second time in three games that Prince topped 20 points for the Lady Bears (22-1, 11-0 Big 12), who overcame a shaky start with a 13-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Iowa State (12-10, 3-8) started strong at home, pulling to 34-31 late in the first half. But Baylor opened the second half with nine straight points and pushed its lead to 57-36 midway through the third quarter.

The Lady Bears outscored Iowa State 45-21 in the second half. Nina Davis scored 13 points and Alexis Jones had 12 for Baylor.

Fayne contributed six points to an 8-0 surge midway through the second that put Illinois State up 38-28 with 7:42 left. Jeremy Morgan led the Panthers (10-12, 5-6) with 12 points.

Ferentz and Campbell discuss recruiting classes

Sports

February 1st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Recruiting season comes an an end for college football with national signing day. The Iowa Hawkeyes signed a class of 22 players, including defensive lineman A.J. Epenesa and offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs. The Hawkeyes finished fast after having several key recruits decommit last fall. (Click on the left side of the audio bar to hear the comments)

Ferentz says the process has stayed pretty much the same even though interest is at an all-time high.

Ferentz says attrition is the biggest enemy of the program and they need to find players who are committed for the long haul.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell signed a class of 26 players. One of the top prospects is wide receiver Josh Johnson from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Campbell says the class will boost the talent level as well as the culture of the program.

5-star DE Epenesa highlights Iowa’s latest class

Sports

February 1st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa landed one of the top recruits in school history on Wednesday in defensive lineman A.J. Epenesa. Epenesa, the rare five-star recruit to commit to Iowa, is a 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end from Edwardsville, Illinois. He is expected to make an immediate impact for the Hawkeyes. Epenesa was considered one of the top defensive players in America, and a standout performance at the U.S. Army All-American Game only heightened expectations.

Iowa was already loaded with defensive linemen. The Hawkeyes need receivers, and although they signed three on Wednesday none is expected to be ready to start by August.

Other things to know:

Top 25 Class: No.

Best in class: Epenesa. The son of former Hawkeye Eppy Epenesa, A.J. could have played anywhere in the country but chose to follow his father to Iowa City. Iowa has been known to get the best out of raw recruits, so it’ll interesting to see what Kirk Ferentz and his staff can do with a player with the potential to be a star as a freshman.

Best of the rest: Tristan Wirfs, OL, Mount Vernon, Iowa. At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, Wirfs could end up at either guard or tackle. Wirfs was also a state qualifier in wrestling and a state champion in the discus, traits that seem to make him a classic fit for a Ferentz-coached line.

Late addition: Nate Wieland, LB, Iowa City. Wieland was a star quarterback who’ll shift to linebacker. He wasn’t heavily recruited, but the Hawkeyes have been known to turn overlooked local kids into All-Big Ten types.

One that got away: WR Oliver Martin. A four-star recruit from Iowa City, Martin seemed like he might be destined for Iowa. But with offers from scores of big-time programs, Martin passed on the Hawkeyes – who currently don’t have a wide receivers coach – for Michigan.

How they’ll fit in: Epenesa and incumbent edge rushers Anthony Nelson and Matt Nelson could give Iowa a chance to be elite at rushing the passer in 2017, which will be crucial since the Hawkeyes will have a pair of new cornerbacks. The Hawkeyes will also have to hope at least one of their new wideouts can make an immediate impact.
