The Audubon Wheelers fended off a scrappy Logan-Magnolia squad to come away with a Class 1A District 15 Quarterfinal win 51-44. The Wheelers held a lead from the mid point of the second quarter through the end of the game but the Panthers kept within striking distance throughout. Logan-Magnolia led 15-12 at the end of the first and Audubon rallied for a 4 point edge by halftime. The Wheelers made it a 7 point lead by the end of the third and Logan-Magnolia got within three points with :30 left in the game. Audubon senior Tate Killeen came up big at the free throw line, hitting back to back one-and-bonus opportunities to seal the win.

After the game Killeen talked about heading to the free throw line in that big late game moment.

Audubon Head Coach Colleman Mullenix thought the Wheelers did a much better job with ball movement on offense in the second half.

Killeen led all-scorers in the game with 18 points. Kaiden Smith and Lane Lawson both finished with 12 for the Wheelers who improve to 16-6 on the season. Audubon advances to the Class 1A District 15 Semifinals and will face the Exira-EHK Spartans next Tuesday night at 8:00pm back in Elk Horn.

Logan-Magnolia was led by 12 points from Matt Soetmelk. The Panthers finish the season with a record of 11-10.

Don Bosco leads with 31 points in Class 1-A after day one.  Denver is second with 29.9 and Underwood is third with 23.5.

In Class 2-A, West Delaware has 19 points to lead a crowded field.  Solon has 18 points and PCM is third with 15.5.

Waverly-Shell Rock leads the big schools with 31.5, just ahead of Southeast Polk with 25 and Fort Dodge with 23 points.

The Atlantic/CAM wrestling team has five wrestlers stepping on the mat today for the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament and they are hoping to hit the medal stand by Saturday night. The Trojans competing are Garrett McLaren (106), Joe Weaver (120), Chase McLaren (138), Connor Pellett (152), and Cale Roller (220).

Atlantic/CAM Head Wrestling Coach Tim Duff said his coaching staff has been telling the kids they have earned their way to compete as one of the best in the state and now they just need to go out and compete.

A lot has been made this week about the new seeding for the tournament brackets but Coach Duff said at the end of the day where your name is on a bracket doesn’t change where you can finish and he thinks all of his wrestlers are capable of winning.

Class 2A will step on the mat for the 1st round tonight from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Listen for updates on KJAN and follow results on our sports page.

The 2019 edition of the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament begins today at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Day 1 action will include 1st round and 1st round consolation matches. Session 1 will be Class 3A from 9:00am-12:00pm, Session 2 will be Class 1A from 1:30pm-4:30pm, and Session 3 is Class 2A from 6:00pm-9:00pm.

We’ll have coverage throughout the weekend following area wrestlers with updates throughout each day and live coverage of the Finals on Saturday night with Jim Field and Justin Williams.

Here is a look at the report schedule on KJAN from Jim Field:

Thursday: 10:20am, 11:35am, 1:45pm, 2:45pm, 3:45pm, 4:45pm, 7:30pm (Between basketball games), and following the conclusion of the second basketball game at about 9:15pm.

Friday: 10:20am, 11:35am, 1:05pm, 3:30pm, 5:45pm, 8:05pm (or halftime of basketball game), 8:45pm, 9:45pm.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Trae Berhow had a season-high 20 points as Northern Iowa topped Illinois State 77-64 on Wednesday night. Spencer Haldeman had 16 points for Northern Iowa (11-15, 6-7 Missouri Valley Conference). AJ Green added 13 points. Isaiah Brown had 10 points for the home team. Wyatt Lohaus, whose 10 points per game heading into the matchup was second on the Panthers, shot only 14 percent for the game (1 of 7). Northern Iowa posted a season-high 16 3-pointers.

Phil Fayne had 21 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Redbirds (14-12, 7-6). William Tinsley added nine rebounds. Milik Yarbrough, the Redbirds’ leading scorer entering the contest at 17 points per game, shot only 14 percent for the game (1 of 7). The Panthers leveled the season series against the Redbirds with the win. Illinois State defeated Northern Iowa 70-69 on Jan. 8. Northern Iowa takes on Evansville on the road on Sunday. Illinois State takes on Bradley at home on Saturday.
