Feb. 27, 2019 — Hawkeye Sports Properties, the multimedia rights manager for University of Iowa Athletics, today announced it will reinstate play-by-play announcer Gary Dolphin beginning with coverage of football spring practice. Dolphin will also return for the 2019-2020 football and men’s basketball seasons.

The reinstatement decision, like the suspension, was made by Learfield’s Hawkeye Sports Properties, following collaborative engagement with the Iowa Athletics Department. Dolphin has served as “Voice of the Hawkeyes” since 1996.

Dolphin was suspended on Friday through the remainder of the men’s basketball season for an inappropriate comment during the Feb. 19 broadcast of the Iowa men’s basketball game against Maryland.

Dolphin and Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta will participate in a 3 pm CT press conference at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The CAM Cougars girls basketball team will get the chance to test their skills on the State Tournament stage on Wednesday night with a match-up against Montezuma in the Class 1A Quarterfinals. We’ll have coverage of first appearance at State for the Cougars since 1997 on KJAN.

CAM comes into the game playing their best basketball of the season. The 21-2 Cougars dominated from wire-to-wire in their Regional final win over Colo-Nesco 66-29. The Cougars moved the ball well, played great pressure defense, and shot the light out in that win big win. CAM Head Coach Joe Wollum talked about the spot the Cougars are in right now.

CAM is averaging 67 points per game as a team and has two players that average double figures in seniors Madison Gettler (19.5ppg) and Paige Mcafee (13.3ppg). Coach Wollum said the team isn’t just settling for making the state tournament, they want to make some noise and have been focused on the work they need to do.

The Montezuma Braves are 21-2 on the season as well and are back in the state tournament for the second straight season. The Braves are averaging 58 points per game and also have two players averaging in double figures. Future Iowa Hawkeye Shateah Wetering leads the way with 19.2 points per game and fellow senior Riley Gatton averages 11.1 points per outing. Braves Head Coach Janel Burgess said they like to play a similar style as the Cougars.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Bridget Carleton scored all of her 27 points in the second half, including a layup with 3.1 seconds left, as No. 20 Iowa State rallied late to beat Texas Tech 64-62 on Tuesday night. The Red Raiders led 55-45 with 7:15 remaining before the Cyclones closed on a 19-7 run. Carleton scored 12 points during the stretch. Texas Tech took the lead with 4:08 to play in the second quarter, and led by as many as 11 points early in the fourth.

Iowa State (21-7, 11-5 Big 12) rebounded from a 73-60 loss to top-ranked Baylor on Saturday and swept the series with the Red Raiders. The victory was also the 500th win for Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly.

Carleton also had 11 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals to lead the Cyclones. She is now three points shy from becoming the second player in the program with 2,000 career points. Kristin Scott added 10 points for Iowa State.

Brittany Brewer had 19 points and matched a career-high with 16 rebounds to lead Texas Tech (12-15, 3-13), which has lost three of its last four games. Chrislyn Carr had 16 points and Zuri Sanders chipped in with eight points and 12 rebounds.

Ohio State, fighting to improve its NCAA Tournament chances, got its first win in five tries against ranked teams this season.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Tyson Carter scored a season-high 22 points, Quinndary Weatherspoon added 20 and Mississippi State beat Missouri 68-49 on Tuesday night. Mississippi State has won five straight league games for the first time since 2008. Missouri has lost four straight.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — All-Star right-hander Miles Mikolas and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a $68 million, four-year contract covering 2020-23, raising his pay to $75.5 million over the next five seasons. The 30-year-old would have been eligible for free agency after this year’s World Series. Corbin returned from three seasons with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan’s Central League and tied for the NL lead in wins last year, going 18-4 with a 2.83 ERA.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Napheesa Collier scored 32 points, making 13 of 15 shots, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead No. 2 UConn to an 84-47 victory over Wichita State. The Huskies were missing coach Geno Auriemma for the second straight game because of a stomach virus.

The Exira-EHK Spartans started well in their Substate Final match-up with Sioux Central on Tuesday night but it wasn’t enough to push them on to State. The Spartans ultimately fell to the Rebels 80-69.

The Spartans opened up the game with an 11-3 lead that turned into a 14-6 edge before the Rebels rallied to make it a three point game at the end of the first quarter 16-13. The Rebels took their first lead of the game early in the second quarter at 18-17 and slowly built from there. The Spartans got a great corner three from Josh Pettepier on an inbound play toward the end of the first half to make it a six point game, but the Rebels answered right back with a transition three from Hunter Decker to swing momentum back and give Sioux Central the halftime edge at 40-31.

The Spartans would fall down by as many as 17 in the third quarter but rallied back to get within 9 early in the fourth quarter. That’s as close as they would get. Exira-EHK Head Coach Doug Newton talked about how the game played out.

Sioux Central was led by senior Hunter Decker with 21 points. Fellow senior Blake Cavanaugh was well above his average with 17 points in the game, including 8-9 from the foul line. The Rebels were 24 of 35 from the stripe for the game. The Rebels improve to 22-2 on the season and will head to the Boys Class 1A State Tournament next week for the first time in program history.

The Spartans were led by 18 points from senior forward Trever Schulz, 17 from senior center Dakota Rold, and 16 from senior point guard Cole Burmeister. The Spartans end their season with a record of 22-3. It marks the end of an incredible run for six seniors for the Spartans that also includes Josh Pettepier, Trey Nelsen, and Ian Leader. Coach Newton talked about the legacy these seniors leave behind.

Burmeister and Rold finish their careers as 1,000 point scorers. Pettepier was close to 1,000 points and finishes with over 200 three point makes for his Spartan tenure. That class notched a 72-23 career record for the Spartans.

Ohio State (18-10, 8-9 Big Ten), fighting to improve its NCAA Tournament chances, got its first win in five tries against ranked teams this season.
Joe Wieskamp had 17 points to lead Iowa (21-7, 10-7), and Tyler Cook added 12 points.

The Hawkeyes had won five of six heading into the game but couldn’t overcome Ahrens and the Buckeyes. UP NEXT:
