Iowa baseball prepares for international competition

Sports

July 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeye baseball team gets an early start of the 2018 season as the Hawkeyes will represent the United States in the World University Games in Taiwan next month. Iowa coach Rick Heller says several of the players are still taking part in summer league baseball.

The Hawkeyes will host three exhibition games, the first is Tuesday, and take part in the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas, to prepare for the trip.

The Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Tournament title last season and Heller says the early start will be a benefit for next season.

Heller says most International competition these days involves professional players.

Contreras homers as Quintana, Cubs beat Cards, tie Brewers

Sports

CHICAGO (AP) — Willson Contreras hit a tiebreaking two-run homer, Jose Quintana won again and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Sunday night to move into a virtual tie for first in the NL Central. Kyle Schwarber also connected as the Cubs won for the eighth time in nine games since the All-Star break. The World Series champions improved to 51-46, just a few percentage points ahead of Milwaukee after the Brewers (53-48) lost 6-3 at Philadelphia.

Quintana (6-8) struck out seven in six innings in his first home start since he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the White Sox on July 13. He pitched seven sparkling innings in an 8-0 victory at Baltimore in his Cubs debut last Sunday. Coming off his first career shutout, Michael Wacha (7-4) was charged with five runs and six hits in six innings in his first loss since May 30. Wade Davis finished for his 20th save in 20 chances.

St. Louis first baseman Matt Carpenter left the Cardinals’ game against the Chicago Cubs with right quad tightness, Sunday night. Carpenter reached on an error in the first and was thrown out at home when he tried to score on Jedd Gyorko’s two-out double to left-center. Carpenter was replaced by Luke Voit before the Cubs batted in the second inning Sunday night. The 31-year-old Carpenter is batting .248 with 14 homers and 46 RBIs in 93 games. The team says he is day to day.

Bryant gallops home, Cubs rally in 8th, edge Cardinals 3-2

Sports

CHICAGO (AP) — Kris Bryant galloped home from first base on Anthony Rizzo’s bloop double, capping a three-run rally in the eighth inning that sent the Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Saturday in the ever-tightening NL Central race.

A classic pitchers’ duel between Jon Lester and Adam Wainwright kept it scoreless into the eighth. The Cubs began the day one game behind shaky Milwaukee for the division lead, with the Cardinals 3 1/2 back of the Brewers.

After Paul DeJong and Randal Grichuk hit two-out homers off Lester for a 2-0 lead, the Cubs came back. Ben Zobrist’s RBI double with two outs made it 2-1 and chased Wainwright. Bryant greeted reliever Matt Bowman (2-4) with a broken-bat single that tied it. Brett Cecil then relieved and on a 3-2 pitch, Rizzo followed a looper toward left-center. Bryant ran hard the whole way and slid home as catcher Yadier Molina couldn’t control center fielder Dexter Fowler’s one-hop throw.

Lester (7-6), who had a perfect game until Wainwright singled with two outs in the sixth, struck out 10. Wade Davis walked a pair with two outs before striking out Molina for his 19th saves in 19 chances.
