Morrison’s 10th-inning homer leads Rays past Cardinals 3-2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Logan Morrison hit his second homer of the game in the 10th inning to lead the Tampa Bay Rays past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Sunday. Morrison drove a 97-mph fastball from Sam Tuivailala into the right-center field bleachers with one out in the 10th inning for 31st homer this season, a career high.

Sergio Romo (3-1) threw a scoreless ninth, and Alex Colome worked a scoreless 10th for his major league-leading 39th save in 44 chances. All five runs in the game were scored on solo homers.

The win was the Rays’ third in four games and fifth in seven as they attempt to chase down a wild-card spot. Tampa Bay improved to 8-5 in extra innings. Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer allowed one run and five hits over seven innings. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one.

Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings, striking out eight and walking three.

Chiefs’ Spencer Ware tears knee ligament, could miss season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs running back Spencer Ware could require season-ending surgery after tearing one ligament in his right knee and damaging another during Friday night’s preseason game in Seattle. Ware had an MRI on Saturday that revealed the extent of the injury.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Sunday that Ware tore the posterior cruciate ligament, an injury that itself is not always season-ending. But Burkholder said Ware also damaged the lateral collateral ligament, and the combination of injuries will likely require surgery.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that third-round draft pick Kareem Hunt will be the starter for the season opener on Sept. 7 at New England. Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller will likely serve as backups.

SEATTLE (AP) — Kansas City running back Spencer Ware’s right knee injury might not be as bad as first feared. Ware sprained his right knee and was carted off the field in the Chiefs’ 26-13 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks. But Kansas City coach Andy Reid said after the game that X-rays came back negative and that Ware would have an MRI on Saturday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tommy Pham hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday. It was Pham’s first career walk-off homer and the fourth this season for the Cardinals. Tyler Lyons pitched the ninth to earn the win.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Mike Clevinger pitched six sharp innings and rookie Bradley Zimmer made a sensational catch in center field before ending Jason Hammel’s bid for a perfect game, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 4-0 win over the Kansas City Royals Saturday night. The Royals fell eight games back in the AL Central and were shut out for the second straight night. They have not scored in 25 innings.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kansas City Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a sore elbow. Duffy had been scheduled to start Sunday in the finale of a three-game series against the Indians. Duffy missed a month earlier in the season with a strained right oblique. His latest injury comes as the Royals are trying to stay in the playoff chase.

PARIS (AP) — Ohio State star Kyle Snyder scored a late takedown of Olympic gold medalist Abdusalim Sadulaev in the deciding match, and the United States won the world freestyle wrestling title for the first time in 22 years. The U.S. and Russia were tied heading into the highly anticipated match between Snyder and Sadulaev, who moved up to the 213-pound weight class to challenge the American. Snyder, the 2016 Olympic champion who led Ohio State to its second straight NCAA title last season, won 6-5.

Atlantic rolls to opening win over Clarinda

The Atlantic Trojans football team rolled to a season opening win at Clarinda on Friday night 40-0. The Trojans jumped on top early scoring on their first two possessions and didn’t look back.

Chase Mullenix opened up the scoring capping off the opening drive with a 25-yard touchdown run. After the Trojans forced a three and out for Clarinda on their first possession, Atlantic added another score in four plays with a Dillon Sonntag 48-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.

Clarinda’s longest drive of the night on the next possession would be cut off by a Logan Reilly interception that he returned 51 yards for a touchdown.  Atlantic seized full control of the game on that play and lead 33-0 at halftime.  One more score would be added on the Trojans’ first possession of the second half to bring the final 40-0 score.

Chase Mullenix finished with one touchdown receiving and one rushing. Jaxson Eden threw two touchdown passes and 5 different Trojans would enter the end zone on the night.  The Trojan defense was stellar as well, holding Clarinda under 100 yards of total offense.

Atlantic will now return home for a game against the Shenandoah Mustangs next Friday at the Trojan Bowl.

Feline fight: No Rally Cat as St. Louis Cardinals mascot

Sports

August 25th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The Rally Cat won’t be spending time frolicking as the mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The frisky feline ran onto the field during a game with the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 9 and was a good luck charm. Yadier Molina hit a grand slam on the next pitch after the cat was retrieved by a groundskeeper.

The four-month-old tabby disappeared and the St. Louis Feral Cat Outreach captured it the next day. The Cardinals announced plans to adopt the cat, host a Rally Cat Appreciation Day on Sept. 10 and let it live in the clubhouse.

But the nonprofit balked, saying the team wanted to exploit the cat rather than take care of it.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Cardinals dispute that claim, but they don’t want to get into a cat fight.

The group is looking for someone to adopt the kitten after it gains more weight.

University of Iowa athletics to give university $2 million

News, Sports

August 25th, 2017 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – University of Iowa officials say its athletics department will give $2 million to the school this year.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the announcement comes over a year after university President Bruce Harreld asked the department to find ways to use its revenue to further the institution’s core academic goals.

The funds are less than 2 percent of the athletic department’s nearly $120 million budget and will be spent on recreational services, diversity programming and student life.

The department also gave the university $2 million last year.

The state’s three public universities have lost more than $30 million due to funding reductions by state lawmakers.

Harreld has asked the state Board of Regents to increase tuition by 7 percent a year for the next five years to counteract the cuts.
