CAM ends another great baseball season with loss to Tri-Center

Sports

July 17th, 2018 by admin

The Tri-Center Trojans punched their ticket to the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament with a Substate 8 Final win over the CAM Cougars 8-3. Tri-Center returns to State after a one year absence and CAM falls just short of back to back appearances.

Tri-Center got to CAM Starting pitcher Thomas Hensley early with 2 runs on 3 hits in the 1st inning. CAM answered back to tie the game at 2 with 2 hits in the top of the 2nd. But Tri-Center went right back to work with 1 run on 2 hits in the 2nd and 4 runs on 5 hits in the third.

Hensley left after 2 1/3 innings and Nick Holste finished the game for CAM. By the time it was all said and done Tri-Center had 8 runs on 14 hits. CAM Head Coach Dan Daugherty gave Tri-Center a lot of credit for their strong offense.

Dan Kenealy was the winning pitcher for the Trojans going the distance allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks.

The Trojans improved to 21-2 on the season and will head to Principal Park in Des Moines next week for the State Tournament.

CAM ends their season at 20-8. The Cougars saw the end to two illustrious athletic careers for Thomas Hensley and Nick Holste. After the game Hensley looked back at his time as a Cougar.

Hensley spoke about what he wants his legacy to be and advice he would give to youngsters working to have success.

Coach Daugherty reflected on what Hensley and Holste have meant to the CAM program.

Atlantic Softball Season ends with Loss in Consolation

Sports

July 17th, 2018 by Jim Field

Atlantic saw the softball season end Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 loss to Benton Community in the Class 3-A State Tourney in Fort Dodge.  Playing less than 24 hours after a quarterfinal round loss to Humboldt, Atlantic could only muster 2 hits, singles by Alexis Handel and Olivia Engler, in the consolation round game.

Benton scored six runs in the third inning to take command, as the Trojans struggled defensively, committing six errors in the game.  The miscues showed up in the pitching stats, as Atlantic’s Ally Anderson suffered the loss, giving up all eight runs, but only two were earned.  Anderson allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked only one batter.

Atlantic finishes the season with a record of 30-7.

Matt Campbell Touts Experienced Offensive Line

Sports

July 17th, 2018 by admin

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says experience along the offensive line should help the Cyclone offense make strides this season. ISU has four players back with starting experience up front off last year’s team that finished 8-5 and won the Liberty Bowl.

Campbell says improvement on the offensive line has been a priority since he took the job.

Campbell says the offensive line should help bolster the ground game.

The Cyclones open the season at home on September first against South Dakota State.

Atlantic falls to Humboldt 3-0 in State Quarterfinals

Atlantic falls to Humboldt 3-0

The Atlantic Trojans dropped their Class 3A Quarterfinal game to Humboldt by the final of 3-0 on Monday night. Humboldt used solid pitching and defense to keep the Atlantic offense cold and got a couple timely hits to push away for the win.

Humboldt opened the scoring in the 3rd with a one-out single by Carlie Thompson followed by a double by Jori Hajek. On the Hajek double Atlantic’s Karsyn Rush made a great pick-off throw to Olivia Engler who then fired it to home to pick off Thompson at the plate. That didn’t stymie the Wildcat attack though as Maddy Lange roped a double that brought Hajek home from second.

The Wildcats would later add two more runs in the 5th. Jori Hajek hit a one-out single followed by an RBI double from Mady Lange to bring her home. Ellie Jacobsen followed with a single to bring Lange home and push the Wildcat lead to 3-0. Atlantic would stop any more damage by getting the final two out of the inning after an error and stranding two Wildcat runners. But that was more than enough damage done for Humboldt to get the win.

Atlantic went three up and three down in the 6th and managed one hit in the 7th from Kennedy Goergen before two straight 4-3 ground-outs ended the game.

Ally Anderson took the loss in the circle allowing 3 runs on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts, no walks, and one hit batter. Ellie Jacobsen forced Atlantic into a number of fly outs and picked up the win. She allowed no runs on just two hits with 2 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 1 hit batter.

Atlantic falls to 30-6 on the season and will now play in the consolations tomorrow afternoon against Benton Community. We’ll have pregame at 2:00pm and first pitch at 3:00pm for that game on Dodger Diamond at Harlan Rogers Park.

Humboldt improved to 31-3 and will move on to the Semifinals to face Davenport Assumption on Wednesday at 11:30am.
